Preferred squadron builder?

By Intys Rule, in X-Wing

From the Index thread, I see there are 3 online squad builders and 1 squad builder program. To date, I've been using Voidstate's squad builder but I've noticed it sometimes goes berserk when doing many changes to a squad and I'd have to restart it. I do like it because it displays card/upgrade info in a complete manner (I don't have to select a card in order to read what it's about). However, I've now twice fielded an illegal list due to errors from the program so I'm looking at other options.

I would prefer one that still displayed pilot or card information without actually having to select that pilot/card first. Also having a "mobile" option (for smartphones) would be great.

I was wondering what is YOUR preferred squadron builder and why?

(pity this forum does not have a poll option)

I like yet another for ease of use. Never had any glitches and it does work on mobiles, though bringing up the card text on a mobile can be a bit cumbersome.

Although really I most of the time just use the actual cards and a calculator.

Fab's, primarily because it seems to be the squadbuilder that pairs best with VASSAL. Can be a little buggy but it's a small price to pay for having the card visuals in-builder.

'Yet another' is pretty good, but if you're after a mobile option I would actually recommend an app called BattleScribe.

I use Battlescribe for a couple of reasons, some of which are X-Wing related, some are not.

Firstly Battlescribe is not a X-Wing specific list builder. It's a generic app that then uses datafiles that include all of the info for a specific game system. This means that you can use the one app as a list builder for multiple gaming systems. The data files are manually updated for your client but it reminds you if you haven't updated them for a while and to update them is a single click of the button so it's easy and no hassle. It also has a neat feature of being able to sync your lists to your dropbox, so anytime I make a change to a list when my mobile gets back on a WLAN it updates my dropbox so I can go to my PC, pull up the list and print it off without having to stuff around.

As an X-Wing specific list builder it does a reasonable job. You do have to select an upgrade before you can see what it does but it will let you select multiple options (and give you a warning that you've made an illegal list) so that you can easily view them.

My only gripe with it is that I can't organise lists into folders (ideally for individual game systems). I get around this by putting XW at the beginning of all of my X-Wing lists so that I can easily find them.

I use the X-WIng Squad Builder app almost exclusively anymore. It's been updated with Wave 5 and the huge ships, and even lets you track wins and losses for the individual saved lists. Its great for working up lists anywhere you happen to get an idea. It works fine on my droid, I honestly couldn't say if it works for I-phones.

I use yet Another because it has the best and quickest mobile performance. Voidstate is my go-to if I'm not on my phone. And if I need a printed copy for a tournament you can't beat Voidstate.

I use (Yet Another) X-wing Squad Builder for both desktop and mobile. I feel like it helps me visualize my list and my options really well.

Yet another. I like voidstate too but it doesn't work very well on my tablet/phone.

I use X-Wing Squads Designer by David Martinez Borque on my android phone for building squads. It does a good job in keeping updates and tracking my collection.

I still use X-wing Companion for references as it has detailed information such as the contents of each expansion pack.

I use Voidstate´s and Fab´s squadron builders on equal basis.

Fab´s takes what type of expansions you own into account.

I think Voidstate´s can do this too, but until now refused to create a FB-account to create a Voidstate log-in.

But maybe I´ll change that :P

Voidstate´s squad-builder gives a handy print-out though.

Very convenient when playing with more than two players and keeping an overview of your own squad.

Voidstates is my fave.

I just wish they would fix the 'my collection' bug that resets everything to zero every now and then.

Also be adjusted to reflect the fact YT2400 and Decimator have been out for a while now and are not 'unreleased'... i bet you could find one in mongolia if you tried by now.

also, its not 'part of the game' but i've asked him a few times for an 'unrestricted' build option which would make epic game swith CR90s each side and scenario building with pirate fleets or captured craft possible.

I have X-wing Squad Builder for Android also. I have never had any problems. It's a great app.

However, I've now twice fielded an illegal list due to errors from the program so I'm looking at other options.

Yikes. Sorry about that. I should point out that it's not a bug that lets you play illegal lists... I deliberately let people break the rules because lots of people play house rules or are casual in applying the squad building rules. So, yeah, you can have Chewbacca with Chewbacca as crew. I guess it's about preferring to give freedom over strictly enforcing the rules.

Still, sorry about the illegal lists. :o

I've squashed that bug now. Sorry about that.

Could you not solve two problems with the 'unrestricted' build tab.

That would then let you let people like me have imperial cr90 and people have house rules and chewbacca with chewwbacca crew

then your rebel and imperial and scum lists could *only* allow legal stuff.

That would make me very happy.

Could you also change the wave 5 stuff to 'released' as its been out for months, its cosmetic but woudl be nice

But thank you so much for a brilliant free service, i know you're on an epic trek with your family and i hope you're having a great time. If its an issue of time and money i dont have a lot of the latter but would happily paypal a donation towards keeping the builder up to date and (hopefully) getting an unrestricted/freeplay build tab.

This community is so lucky to have (at last) 3 world class squad builders, and personally I like Yet Another being the best. Hard to say why, but the ergonomy and the graphical look of it pleases me most.

But really its like comparing a great wine with (yet) another great wine :)

I've been looking for a good Squad Builder that I can use on my phone that also saves my squads. I've got Battlescribe, but haven't used it for X-wing. I might try to find those data files and use it. Might just go for another.

I use X-wing Companion and LOVE it. It's fantastic.

I've been using Fab's when on my pc to write lists.

There are a couple of Android based apps and I might look at them, too.

I use Voidstates the most. That has all my lists in it. I like it better when I'm on my computer, I like the printout options and such.

But on my Galaxy tab, I find it doesn't work quite as well. Loading a squad can be a bit of a pain, and in general I find the buttons are a bit on the small side.

Yet Another works great on my tab, so if I'm doing something on there, I tend to use that instead. But even then I put the squad into Voidstate when I have a chance.

I really like voidstate and yet another, but have been using an app on my phone since I dont bring my tablet with me.

It's an android app called X-Wing squad designer. It's awesome and is up to date with the latest stuff..

Would it help if I made some kind of squadron viewer app so you could browse and view your squadrons more easily with mobile devices?

Voidstate

I prefer voidstate's builder but am finding that unless I am at home I am using "yet another" more as I cannot access FB through work which prevents me accessing my lists it also works better for me on my phone.

I prefer the visuals on voidstate's builder and the fact that I can record wins and losses, which allows me to track which lists have been more or less successful for me.

Maybe... What happens is I pull up the list for "My Squadrons" and start to scroll, but it's like the screen won't refresh or something. I scroll down and see the boxes moving, but the lists don't for 2 to 5 seconds, then it seems to catch up.

I don't know if this is an issue with Androids, Java, or what. It seems it worked a month or so ago, but I can't say for sure when.

I love the ability to record a squadrons 'battle honours' using Voidstates.

I've tried to give the other builders a fair go but none of them are as intuitive or useful.
