I've recently fallen in love with Biggs Darklighter. Its' true. I won a small local tournament last weekend using him, and it got me thinking about how else I could use his ridiculously amazing ability. Here are three new ideas I've come up with, trying to abuse his ability as much as possible. The concept here was to create a squad that doesn’t really need to arc-dodge, or run away, or anything like that. The idea is to create a Biggs that is so hard to kill that I can fly straight at the enemy and stay close slowly grinding them down while they are forced to continually shoot at a difficult to kill Biggs.
Squad 1:
Biggs + R2F2+Stealth Device (31)
Lando + Tactical Jammer + Nien Nunb + Jan Ors (48)
Airen Cracken + Squad Leader (21)
The general setup would be to have Lando & Airen flying side by side with Biggs behind them. Biggs then uses R2F2 as his action, and Lando gives him a free action which would most often be a focus, but Jan gives him the flexibility to take an evade if necessary. Airen provides insurance for Biggs. If Biggs bumps another ship, losing his action, Airen can hand him a free one with Squad Leader. Airen then provides another free action to either Biggs or Lando after firing. With a small 3 ship squad I fugure action economy is vital!
If my math is right, Biggs would be rolling :
- 2 green dice (base agility)
- + 1 stealth device
- + 1 R2F2
- + 1 for being behind Lando with Tactical Jammer
5 green dice (or 6 at range 3!) with a Focus/Evade token.
Meanwhile I envision Lando and Airen slowly whittling down the enemy while Biggs draws all their hapless fire. This is a squad that would really hope to just fly back and forth along the edge of the board, a joust would be ideal. You'd have to be careful when turning/k-turning as Biggs would most likely loose the Tactical Jammer for a turn while flipping around. A little practice would help in knowing how best to keep him shielded. The really difficult part of this squad is the fact that Biggs would have to move before Lando, and it would very tough to keep him hidden in close quarters. However, the flip side of this is that you do have the option of simply bumping into Lando, losing your action, but at least staying behind the tactical jammer.
Squad 2:
Biggs + R2F2 + Stealth Device (31)
Leebo + Tactical Jammer + Jan Ors
Garven Dreis + R2D6 + Experimental interface + Squad leader
This squad works really hard to protect Biggs. Same general concept as the first one, Biggs hiding behind the large base ship with Tactical Jammer, while getting extra actions from his buddies. In an ideal world Biggs would take R2F2 as his action; then Garven would Focus, and use EI to trigger Squad leader, allowing Biggs to focus as well. Then after Garven fires during the combat phase, he passes Biggs his focus, which Crew Jan converts to an evade. The math is similar to the first squad, with Biggs rolling 5/6 green dice with a focus token + an evade after Garven shoots.
This crew definitely suffers from a lack of firepower, though the mobility of the YT 2400 is intriguing. The ability to barrell roll will make it much easier to keep Biggs hidden after the original straight-line pass past the enemy. This squad would also struggle against a high PS opponent, where Garven's ability to pass Biggs an evade would not be nearly as useful.
Squad 3:
Biggs + R2F2 + Stealth Device (31)
Chewie + Draw their Fire + Tactical Jammer + Leia Organa (48)
Airen Cracken + Squad Leader (21)
Ok be honest, admit that you just pulled up your favourite X-wing companion app and read what exactly Leia Organa does. She's really the icing on the cake of this squad. As with the other squads, when heading straight at yoru opponent during the opening exchange, it shoudl be fairly easy to have Biggs rolling 5 green dice with a focus (in this case from Airen's squad leader). However, once again the trick is how to keep Biggs behind the Falcon once turning/k-turning has begun. Leia helps out mightily in this regard. Run straight at your opponent and then K-turn with no fear - Biggs can still take his R2F2 action and Airen can still net him a focus via Squad leader. That combined with Chewie pulling every single crit from Biggs should keep him alive for a long time.
What do you think? Easily Crushed? Worth a try? Alternations?
