Why does the HWK-290 have such low damage?

By Kingsguard, in X-Wing

The HWK-290 comes without armaments like most civilian ships. The moldy crow like the millennium falcon was modified with additional armaments. However it is harder to keep track of stats on a tile so for the falcon they just included the modified falcon stats on the pilots and gave the HWK-290 1 firepower with a turret for upgrade and their titles just add an extra ability instead of resembling the firepower increase of the additional armaments.

Well both of the developers in a Covenant interview, stated it should have a 2, because even though it has no weapons, anyone going to battle with a ship would add them. But they are not going to do errata to fix it. So for now it has a 1. Same goes for the Phantom, they both admitted it should have a 3 attack not 4, but they won't errata to fix it, because that is not how FFG does it.

I remember the hwk part but not the phantom part.

Yeah, I listened to that whole interview and they didn't say anything like that about the phantom. They also didn't give the reasons you gave on the Crow: Alex Davy saying he felt it should be a two dicer wasn't lore based.

It's there. I think alex says it! From memory, something like "Well were not going to errata the phantom to 3 attack, because we don't use errata for that"

It wasn't an admission that Phantoms should have 3 attack, it was a statement that IF the Phantom eventually proves to be too good, amending its attack value would not be a possible solution.

They did admit the HWK should be 2 attack, however. That could be added in the future with a Title if they wanted.

Pretty certain it's Theorist that brings up a 3 attack phantom, not one of the designers.

The Hawk could be fixed with some type of upgrade card. Like how they have done the B and A.

Don't have any idea how to lower the firepower on the Phantom.

Yeah! I agree. They could release a 0 point modification

Modification:

0 Pts

Gravity Displacement Detector

When being attacked by a ship with the Cloak action, subtract 1 die from the the attacker and you may re-roll 1 blank defense die per attack.

This represents that you are not surprised by the Cloaked ship which is why it has 4 attack in the first place.

Indeed its usually unarmed.

its a light transport. Kyle Katarns is modified for being a spy with a blaster turret.

I think the model probably should have been a big bigger though but i dont want to get into the 'scale' row again.

STOP THIS. ; _ ;

It isn't 29 meters! That's not the official length!

It isn't 29 meters! That's not the official length!

But it should have been.

When determining these things, someone, somewhere in Lucasfilm ****ed up and listened to some bad advice. You can tell that based on the huge majority of people who saw the source material who never even considered that it wasn't falcon sized. Seriously, the number one comment about the ship back when dark forces first came out was that at least they didn't give THIS Han Solo knock off another YT series.

It's just one of those annoying scale issues like the official size of the a-wing.

No, no it should not have been! 29 meters should NEVER have been the official length, ever! That is entirely William C. "Satan" Deitz's fault! The Crow is perfectly sized in the X-Wing Miniatures game.

So far, FFG is the ONLY one not to fudge the size since 1998. I will be forever thankful to them for that, as, because of them, the scale debate can finally be put into the grave where it belongs. And belonged for years.

And yeah someone at lucasfilm seriously screwed up. Mega, mega badly. Not even laughably badly. But FFG came in like Biggs from "Blue Milk Special", swinging in heroically and fixed it in one fell swoop.

It's a refreshing ship too, as you said. It's not a falcon knockoff and shoot when I heard that the guys at Lucasfilm decided it was Corellian I was like, "Noooooooooo this TOTALLY Incom!" but... I digress. That can't be fixed now.

It's the Correlian branch of Income. Like how Mercedes makes cars in all kinds of countries.

Just because WOTC screwed up the size, doesn't mean the error must be persisted.

Precisely. And that's why I am eternally grateful to FFG for fixing it.

cheers for those screenshots.

I stand corrected, perhaps theHWK is the right size, just seems a bit small for a 'light freighter' unless all it does is ship chocolate bars and diamond rings.

Isnt it supposed to have like six crew seat and be able to carry tons of cargo?

Took 'em myself, no problem.

And no. It only has two crew seats. Here. Let me take another. Or two.

I mean really, if anybody ever wanted definitive proof of its demure size, there it is.

Sorry my bad i meant passneger not crew.

Wookiepedia lists it as having 2 crew and 6 passenger seats

Thats why i think it looks a bit small for that *and* ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TONS of cargo space.

See what i mean, eight people and the ability to ship two main battle tanks or 100 small cars...

in that?

I know size doesnt equate to mass but you know what i mean, i mean maybe it can ship 150 tons of coppernicum?

I mean that would probably not take up that much space :)

A rough estimate would be even 150 tons of lead would be 20 metre square cube.

Yeah, that's more than the Falcon, WotC didn't seem to care much about what they put out. I think you can scrap that.

And this is why i sometimes say 'yes the LFL canon says its that size but its clearly not...'

cough *awing* cough

The ship was never a freighter. Merely a courier.

Hope my presentation hasn't been overbearing. It's all right from the source, though.

Beg to differ:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/HWK-290_light_freighter

Emphasis on 'light freighter'

Yes, but that still sticks to the Wizards of the Coast material, and that clearly is wrong.

I thought it was called a light freighter in dark forces?

I thought it was called a light freighter in dark forces?

No? It was simply known as The Moldy Crow there.

Well sure but what the hell is it going to freight? It doesn't even have a boarding ramp.

There is the A-wing two-seater, it would line up at least better with that size. Plus a-wings look kinda right for some screen shots of space battles. If anything the Y-wing ought have been a tad bigger. But the models look fine to me either way so meh? A-wing model looks super sexy and am fine with it. But any who yeah, HWK should have been 2 ATK. If nothing else so when your building your squad you could have a decent putter-butt fighter. I'ts annoying to some players, myself included, that I must take the turret tax or just have an awful ship, particularly when I just want some of those pilot abilities in my squad. Y-wings seem to have auto-take turrets but in actuality they could be torpedo boats just as easily and still have some form of kick after that, so I'm really not restricted as much with their build as I am the HWK.

Those aren't laser cannons. Those are just sensor vanes.

That is literally all they are.

Yeah?

And in one game I was playing, the HWK got critted and the crit discarded the Blaster turret....
