OT: oh my go some people dont get satire/irony/sarcasm

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I always appreciate the British skill of insulting someone and then asking them to agree with you.

It's called "Colonialism". :)

The Belgians tried that to once, but it got out of hand.

Ouch....

I'm from Belgium myself. It's okay if we say it. I think...

Black Friday, thats well racist. I want 'white tuesday' or 'mexican thursday' ... i demand equality!!

LOL! But no I'm not gonna go there.

We bring "racism" on a SW thread and soon we'll have someone anaylising the movies and how storm trooper wear WHITE armor and oppressing people, etc. etc. :)

Lies it represents purity of purpose, our brave lads and lasses fight to bring peace and justice to a galaxy overrun by crime driven by aliens.

Carrie fisher thread was 'phwoar carrie fisher' which turned into an interesting discussion on gender balance in the SW universe and also sidetracked to how 'threatening' forums of the gaming/rpg nature can be to women as they are often patronised or objectified.

Some people like myself pointed out that some men were being offended on behalf of women, while, liek i think at that time men like myself would be upstairs online chatting on this forum while my wife and her friends were talking about how good looking the or 'hot' the guy from firefly was. I think a few of us were tryijng to point out women are not delicate sunflowers that need protecting from the nasty language of those horrible men but actually people like anyone else who can be flirty, dirty, crass and crude too.... only that society frowns on them when they do it.

Gaming as a whole doesnt appeal to women as much as it does men but those women i know who do game (and xwing has a lot of female friends who play, i think out 'group' of gamers in the east mids has about five girls in about 30 people in total... thats high proportions for geek gaming) find xwing an accessable game and dotn care that there are no female pilots (or proportionally few).

My wife tends to play 'kath scarlet' a lot, because i painted her firespray to look like kaths as she didnt like the stock scheme, she knows there are better pilots but likes the story of playing kath. she takes 'howlrunner' if she thinks a list needs that extra punch, not because its a known female pilot.

Women probably dont come on this forum as its very 'top end tourny' centric and its that level of aggressive competition that puts them off not discussion about how pretty carrie fisher may or may not look... i know a few of the girls i game with would have been far cruder about what they'd like to have done to carrie fisher in her infamous gold number

But they play to tell stories with toys... not to get 'killer lists'.

If there is a difference between male and female gamers its that women are more social and better communicators and lack the 'hunter gathererer' instinct to collect everything, own more than the next player and build lists they are in all likelyhood never going to fly to show how clever they are :)

Anyway we digress

Ta!

Wierdly given that i have a fairly international 'real world' friends group after living in london for a while and hanging out on the goth/industril music scene (its got a ridiculous amount on Scandinavians, south Africans and Germans on it) i only actually know one Belgian irl.

He's bloody awesome though so he makes up for quantity with quality.

I'm still dreaming of a white Christmas...

Guy called Karl Lloyd in the highly unlikely event that the 'small world' thing happens....

Used to live Belgium, moved to london late 90s, lives in germany now i think. Might be back in Belgium, havnt spoken for a while but i know he went back to Europe for a work related reason.

Why do all of you Limeys assume Yanks don't get your humor?

Sarcasm is a way of life for some, it is not owned by nationality.

Oh agreed.

hence my post is titled 'some people dont get...' not 'Americans dont get''

Being obtuse is not limited to any one continent.

As an aside my wife *totally* doesnt get metaphors or proverbs.

I spent ages trying to explain the 'bird in the hand' proverb to her.

She's very logical and she thought it was about the emotional wellbeing of a bird being cuddled and not that its better to know what you have and can count on than 'hedge' your bets.

:)

i have to add that she lectures maths at a good university in the UK and has an engineering post grad so isnt being 'thick' , its just her mind deals in absolutes and not 'myths' and she struggles with sub text and the like.

Totally NSFW and contains swearing but well funny scene from 'zack and miri'

please dont click is kevin smith films offend you

So basically this whole topic is about someone that is annoyed that a mod didn't validate the OP's poor sense of humour in the form of their joke?

I have dropped my fair share of spam on these forums but...

I don't know how these sorts of spam threads indicate the health or lack of health of the game, but FFG need to really start taking threads like this down or release something else so we can all moan about that rather than complaining about FFG not validating our fragile egos.

Erm, i think you're reading far too much into this dude...

I said i was *amused* that someone got stressed about an obviously satirical thread that the majority of people understood to be a joke.

From the nature of the chat on this thread i think *most* people saw what i was saying.

As for fragile ego..

Dude, you cant do what i do and have a fragile ego, i put myself up for people having a shot at me on a daily basis.

I edit an international magazine that some people love to hate... i go onstage and play in a band in front of hundreds of people, you know sometimes you get quite harsh or bad reviews and you take it on the chin... if i was a bit shy or worried about what people thought i wouldnt put my head over the parapet every day....

My point was that someone somewhere took offence at a post jokingly saying 'ooh twi leks are hot, sod carrie fisher' and i found that a little amusing.

Talking about things that are no 'oh my god, the game is broken' or threads that are *not* about the meta or a new release are really important to the forums.

Remove the OT threads and this forum would get very dull very quickly.

You're reading this because there was nothing else to read that interested you, proves my point.

You didnt have to comment but you did because it interested you.

A limited amount of OT threads is, as you think it *may* be, positive for the forum, especially those that talk about the demographic of players or elements of the star wars mythos.

Ones that talk about the merits of real world jet fighters probably less so, but interesting all the same.

If you didn't want forum validation why do you care enough to write the initial post then?

Mate im bored. It was light hearted.

I work from home. I can get most of the magazines 'monthly' work done in a few weeks so i have a lot of time to lurk around on forums.

I was amused, alone in the house (as the wife doesnt get back from work til the afternoon) and felt like sharing.

You clearly just feel like arguing.

thats cool though, im bored today too so i've time for you :)

You dont get a post count of over 2000 in a very short time without a lot of daytime free time, being easily bored and a willingness to chip in with any old conversation no matter how inane :)

edit: Hmmm i guess it only works out at about 14 posts a day since i joined so maybe i'm not *that* bored as often as i think.

Please, my main forum I frequent I still average about 21 posts per day over the last 11 years or so, and that's including years where I hardly post. 84.592 posts there at the moment. That puts me in the 171st place, so respectable.

On a side note, working shift work with mainly monitoring computer systems as a job gives you a lot of time to hang out on the internet.

yeah, im the same.

Wake up, take some painkillers.

Put on the radio... argue the toss about stuff i dont really care about online

maybe do some work :)

The one problem with having a job that is 90 per cent working from home is its *really* boring
