Vassal Friendly (Noob) Player Listing

By jjohnson111, in X-Wing

I haven't seen a listing for players on Vassal that correspond with forum names here, and thought I would put together a comprehensive listing to help all players jump into the online gaming community, but I specifically made this for newer players.

So I thought I would get a list of player names going, as a resource for people who want to learn vassal, have read through Mu0n's walk through ( http://s93768914.onlinehome.us/xwing/ ) and want to take that "first step into a much larger world."

I know the Vassal community is extremely friendly and people are always welcoming to new players.

If you reply, I will make sure to update your info, and add you in. I would like to help the Vassal community grow!

This way if you are like me, you log on, lurk, don't see any names you recognize and you don't want to ask them to the dance, now, you should!

So here is what I'd like to do :

Leave you Vassal name:

New player friendly / or not friendly to new players?

What kind of computer are you playing on? Mac or Windows? (some keyboard shortcuts change)

Don't be shy! I know the Vassal program leaves the ability to look for a game, but it doesn't leave a way to let players know if they are "new player friendly!"

Without further adieu:

I'm about to try vassal out for the first time in the next few days, so i for one approve fully!

I'm fairly new myself, with only a couple of Vassal games under my belt, but I'm definitely also friendly.

I've already had some good games with other players I didn't know in advance, some even greener to Vassal than myself.

Don't be shy if you catch me online. Same username.

Same username. Can walk players through the game. I have under 20 games of Vassal.

I play under this username ("s1n"). I've played many games and taught many new players. If you find me on and want to learn about the Vassal module or the game in general, send me a message.

I also play on Vassal with the same name (Osoroshii) and will always help neweer players learn the system.

I'm same username as well, although it has my real name first (Mark Blackburn). I've played with newbs to vassal before. I don't mind doing it most of the time, unless I have limited time to play a game.

I'd love to through my name out there, but I don't actually know my name on Vassal. Womp, womp.

I play on Vassal too with the same name. I'm quite a patient player and I don't mind showing some pointers if you're new to vassal or X-wing, so yeah I'm friendly:)

I am also the same name on here as I am on Vassal. I'm pretty new to Vassal myself, so I'm willing to learn together with anyone :)

EvilEd209 = EvilEd209

That's me!

If you see me online feel free to hit me up for a game. Assuming I am not playing at the time. I lurk all the time!

I'm also under the same handle (Myth Child) and very new to Vassal. Would be willing to play with others who are new or experienced and patient. :)

I've tried and completely don't understand vassal.

I'm MegaSilver on Vassal. I'm available almost any night after 8 PM CT (I play Heroscape online too using the OHS App, so there's something else that could be eating up my time).

I'd like to try is out but I haven't gotten around to reading all the rules on how to play X-Wing on Vassal. And of course I'm really looking forward to a tournament whenever the next one comes around.

I also go by KillerArdvark on Vassal. I only have 2 games under my belt, but I'm happy to help other new people out.

I want to make sure I make that clear too, I am VERY willing to help new players on Vassal. So if you see me, just ask!

Fixed that for you Ed :)

I would also like to note that I am kid friendly. In other words, if you have young kids that take up some of your time, I don't mind pausing. I also have young kids that require my attention at times. I'm sure Ed would agree as well.

I use the same name on Vassal. I've taught a lot of players how to use vassal, and I'm always willing to help a new player learn the system. If you see me online and you want to learn please hit me up. As long as I have time, I will help you learn the system. The system can take a little getting use to, but Mu0n continues to improve things and make them easier for new players to learn and start playing.

I use the same name on Vassal or a slight variation with a 0 at the end. I'm always willing to help out new players and I've taught many in the past. If you see me online feel free to PM me for a match or ask questions. As long as I have the time I'll do my best to help you out.

I pretty much always have Vassal on to spectate and check out what people are running as I don't often have a full 2+ hours for a game, but the majority of the time I am away from the computer. If you message me and I don't respond, I am not ignoring you...I just forgot to mark that I am AFK in Vassal. I'll definately message you once I get back.

2 big tips to make your Vassal time more enjoyable are to learn to save and load your squads (You can do this in offline mode and it is very easy if you use the squad templates on the X-Wing module website) and to learn as many shortcuts as you can (This is huge). I went from hating Vassal the first few times I used it to really enjoying it now. Learning the shortcuts was a big part of it as well as the amazing work Muon has put it to make the module what it is today.

Awesome, glad people are up for this idea. I was slightly intoxicated when I posted this last night, and glad that this was somehow coherent. Anyhow, original post has been updated.

One thing I thought about but took down at the last minute was the inclusion of time zones for people - I would probably split people up by time zones, just for an extra level of depth. Does anyone think that would be useful?

That's usually how I am on vassal, so...

If you're putting together a spreadsheet, I would recommend polling people on what times they are typically online and just list it in GMT or whatever is common.

You might also want to add what type of system they have. MAC users can use Vassal but the hotkeys are sligthly different and some of the bugs are different. I had more than once run up with a player telling me to hit "ALT" + "X" and I have to tell them that there is no "ATL" button on a MAC. There is a sequence that works but it is just another key, but you have to know that for it to work.

I'm Khyros on Vassal. I'm fine playing against people new to vassal and helping them out. And typically I'm fine with playing people that are newer to the game, though if I'm trying to seriously try out a list or prep for a tourney, I might turn down a new X wing player. But I've never turned down a new vassal player.

Will do - I was not aware of this! Thank you for the suggestion!

I'm Jedi force kin. I've played a handful of games but find the whe experience quite difficult and frankly not worth playing due to the difficulties in inputting ship data, saving and loading squads and finding someone to play with who doesn't have to leave halfway through the match.

That said, I can't seem to get much real world x wing in and I would like to have a few more cracks at vassal, now that the mod been updated a couple times since I last played.

So, I figure I'm probably on the border between noob-who-needs-help and experienced player who could offer help. I still find the mechanics of playing the game on vassal quite non intuitive, so a game with me isn't the smoothest thing in the world. I could probably struggle through teaching a total noon but it would be quite the stiff and clunky game, most likely.
