The other day I played in my first tournament and decided to fly a list I had been practicing with with friends: Double Phantoms!
The list:
Whisper (32)
Veteran instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Total (39)
Echo (30)
Veteran instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Total (37)
Academy Pilot x2 (24)
List total (100)
The Tourney!
It was a small showing, only 6 pilots. There were 3 rebel 4-ship lists, a fat Han, a TIE swarm, and myself. The only list I was downright worried about was the Fat Han.
First match--Rebel 4-ship
Biggs with R2-D2
Rookie X-wing
Dagger B-wingswith enhanced scopes x2
This match went well for me. We closed and I managed to flank with Echo and Whisper while my Ties went head on. His ships were all flying abreast of each other and a bit spread out, so I was able to barrel roll my ties out of the arcs of the rookie and one of the daggers. On the first volley the phantoms were able to pop Biggs and recloak while his dagger scored two damage to one of the ties. Academy 1 whiffed and academy 2 scored 1 damage against the b-wing. Next round I was able to end at range 1 of the damaged dagger with echo and range 2 with whisper. Another one, two combo and the dagger was down thanks to a Direct Hit crit. The rookie finished off my damaged tie while the other dagger and the surviving academy jousted for 1 damage. The following rounds the phantoms hunted down the rookie and last B-wing for a 100 v. 12 win.
Second Match--Rebel 4-ship
Wedge with Swarm Tactics and an R2 unit
Blue squadron
Rookies, one with an R2 unit
Plus a few upgrades I'm forgetting
Opponent won initiative roll, so Wedge would be taking a page out of Han's book and firing first. Our opening round left the 4 rebels facing echo and the ties with whisper set up to flank the following round. Wedge boosted the b-wing to a 9 and fired on echo, but only took off 1 shield. Echo managed to fire and recloak and the ties did 1 damage to wedges shield between the both of them. The next turn I managed to block wedges 4 speed K-turn leaving him facing the wrong way with a tie and a phantom breathing down his neck. After the shots were fired I was down 1 tie and wedge was at 1 hp. Echo managed to finish him off next round while whisper landed on an asteroid, but luckily enough only one of the rookies where able to capitalize on my mistake and took whisper's shields down. The other rookie killed my last tie however. The following round the phantoms ganged up on one of the rookies, and then split up to hunt down the last xwing and the bwing. The bwing was destroyed but the last rookie survived until the time limit, leaving me with a modified win of 79 v. 24.
Final round--Fat Han
Han Solo, c3p0, Luke, title
Rookie xwing x2
This was the list I had been fearing, and I ended up royally dropping the ball on this match. His list came in at 99 points so he won initiative. We set up with the phantoms across from the rookies and Han staring down the two ties. As we closed I raced forward with the ties while stalling with the phantoms, trying to separate his forces. Here is where things went downhill, I whiffed badly on an evade roll with Whisper, rolling 4 blanks out of 5 dice, and loosing both shields, meanwhile the ties took off only 1 shield and took a crit on one of the academy pilots. The next round was both a spectacular maneuver on my opponents part as well as a grievous misjudgment on mine. One of his rookies went 1 forward while the other did a 4 K-turn, blocked in by asteroids on my right I thought I could get echo to a range 1 shot with a forward left barrel roll decloak. I was wrong, echo ended up at range 1 of both rookies without a shot of his own. Whisper managed to drop one of the rookies to 1 hull, but the two xwings finished off echo. The next two rounds the rookies and Han hunted Whisper down like she owed them money while the Ties managed to kill the damaged rookie and Whisper took Han's shields with her to the afterlife. The final result was a 21 v. 100 loss for me.
Results
I ended up taking third in the tournament overall as my second round opponent had a much better final round than I did and pulled ahead in points. Overall it was a great experience and I walked away learning something new from every opponent I played. Plus I got some shiny new acrylic cloak tokens to go with my phantom build!
