New Xwing S-Foils

By benbaxter, in X-Wing

Has anyone else noticed that it looks like the new x-wings in the trailer have s-foils that fit next to eachother rather than stack vertically? It seems like the raised tip with the lasers on the top wings would allow the lasers cannons to stack without hitting eachother.

All I have seen is people talking about the nose, which to me is far less interesting than the new s-foil configuration.

Yeah. We deduced it'd be like this back when the X-Wing was shown by JJ, so it didn't come as a surprise to us.

It's really cool though and I love it.

Yep i like it too.

Probably makes for a better in atmo fighter, less surface means less air resistance.

I have to wonder if the FFG will end up replacing the old X-Wing outright with this new edition when it comes out. The classic model has fallen behind due to its limited actions and durability. Those two green dice don't mean much against the increase of 3-4 dice attacks.

I am thinking it will be X-Wing 2nd Edition when the new movie comes out.

I think they might bring it out as a new version when the time comes. It should not replace the old X-Wings however, just be a new, slightly improved version of them. Bring some upgrade cards for the old X-Wing with it to make it somewhat cheaper so it stays a viable option. It is widely agreed that the old X-Wings are a bit too expensive anyway

A lot of it depends on if Disney poops on the EU, of course. I like the new X-Wing a heck of a lot better than the E-Wing, and I gotta figure it's stats would be about the same as that ship.

Instead of "2nd edition" I think it's much more likely that they have a different model number or something that has a slightly different dial, possibly different attack, agility, shield, and hull stats, and of course new pilots from the film.

In the meantime I'm guessing we could see some sort of a fix for the current X-Wing via another release given its already been acknowledged by the dedigners as being an issue.

It's not just the interlocking S-Foils. Notably, the engine intakes are now one split on each side, rather than separate per-engine.

Didn't we JUST have thread about that proving the OP wrong as to the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the X-wing?

Not necessarily, the E-wing was designed has a fast attack craft/interceptor, and escort fighter, while the XJ X-wings (the line after the T-65s and the successor to the T-65) was designed to be a more multi-role superiority fighter. They probably have comparable stats, but they fill different roles so one wouldn't really replace the other.

The new X-Wing looks kinda lame IMO. The old S foil configuration looked so much more symetrical and balanced. Also the way the fusilage tapers at the rear is not as cool I think.

I love the new X. Love the trailer. Love it.

And yeah, thinking about it again, there's a few actions on the bar that would definitely separate the X and E-wings.

I love the new x-wing design, but I still love the old one as well. If forced to choose between the two I would probably stick with the old one, simply out of nostalgia, but both are awsome in my opinion.

The OT had a visual identity. The prequels managed not to mess with it as all ships were different.

So why go and mess with the very iconic ships in the sequels? Not to mention the light saber.

Will they also change the audio? Will TIE Fighters should as in the OT? Will light sabers sound different?

Personally I am not a fan of what I have seen. Why mess with that which we all love? I do not share the enthusiasm of the earlier posters.

I'm not a fan of what I've seen, but for different reasons, so I can tell you by experience, you are about to get yelled at a lot. But I'm glad I'm not alone in not liking what I've seen so far.

Have you not seen the teaser? The X-wings, TIEs and Falcon all sound exactly as in the OT.

Yup, and they sound the same in Star Wars: Rebels, too.

Well... It seems like the lightsaber got messed with in a big way in the prequels.

As far as updating the X-Wing from the original, isn't that something that real companies do with their war machines as well?

(Does that make those Pretty Hate Machines?)

I probably shouldn't bring "real life" into a Star Wars discussion. ;-)

Because design does not stay stagnant, even in Star Wars. If X-Wings, Stormtroopers ect... all looked the same 30 years later, it would be odd and even jarring.

The lightsaber is clearly meant to be different to make it unique, I doubt Luke or any other sabber will look like that.

Both look really cool for me, and it the new one is clearly an homage to the old one, it is not like it is something entirely different. But to each their own.

Personally, I like it a lot.

The new X looks enough like an old X (since it is based on the original McQaurrie art after all) to be obviously Star Wars with enough of a twist to be new and fresh. Its a great direction. Consistent, but different. Same with the Droid. Consistent with the OT but different enough to obviously be new.

I think the Lightsaber will be explained. I like the idea of a cross guard, even if it is a bit more fantasy than practical. Given how frequently people's hands get chopped off in prior SW movies, it makes sense to have it. I think the jagged look of it will be explained, and again, looks consistent enough to be the same story/place but different enough that you say "Wow, I wonder what that's about".

Heck even the Stormies are obviously Stormtroopers, but with a new twist to show "Hey this is new".

The Falcon dish obviously had to be replaced... I don't think its shocking that Han wouldn't just get the same old thing, but have it upgraded, especially now that he'd be a hero of the Rebellion and all.

The audio is all the same/close to the same....

If it stayed the same, we would complain - everybody knows a design changes in 30 years! And all that...

If it changes, we would complain - How dare they touch such an iconic image! How dare they!

After the first we will continue and complain Big Mouse is trying an easy moneygrab in a lazy way. <_<

After the second we will continue and complain Big Mouse is ruining it all by implementing their own, naturally wrong, vision. <_<

So after the generic complaints:

The new lightsaber? I don´t know, seems a bit unwieldy to me.

The ball-droid? I think it is funny, Star Wars always had a fair bit of humour in it, especially for kids. Admit it, you do prefer a bouncing droid over Jar Jar. :P

I like the new X-Wing, but prefer the older version. Also I don´t see it as a bad choice for a squad. It still is a reliable, resilient fighter with 3 attack dice.

I currently have 2. I would like to add a third. So if FFG-people read this, a new expansion pack of an X-Wing in Corsec Green, a new pilot card for Corran Horn and an astromech upgrade card for Whistler, together with a generic R2 astromech and some Ion Torpedoes would be nice. Really nice... pleaeaeaeaease?

I honestly can't decide which version of X-Wing I like more. Since I was never partial to the X-Wing, just respected it, I'm not biased.

I dunno' guys.

I think I really like the advanced, sleeker, newer one much more. I'll have to really see it in action before I decide.

The new movies don't remove the old. So I can still have and love the old ones. Masochist that I am I can enjoy the prequels. And I'm sure I'll love the new ones too. Yeah, they look a bit different but I'm okay with that.....gives us more potential ships for X-Wing Minis :D
