I don't think I am over interpreting anything. The story source for the e-wing is possibly being rendered null and void by the new movies. The new movies have a new x-wing design, which the e-wing was supposed to replace. The e-wing may now be an older design, rather than a new republic.
The RPG lines have the default setting placed at just after the destruction of the first death star.
The new canon is going to be a great source of new material, so why not make ships that exist in the invalidated future, current designs? Then they can co-exist with the new canon that is all new media.
Yeah sure, they can really do whatever they want with the canon. That's true.
I think it's far more likely that they will draw on the EU for inspiration, but will be moving the story in their own direction. That panders to EU snobs like me, they get to write their own stories, and fans that are less invested in the EU don't notice the difference.
On the other hand, I can't imagine what good retconning E-wings into Pre-Endor existence would do anyone. We already know the picture is post clone wars because there are two TIE Bizzaros, and TIEs are empire-onwards. So either you make the E-Wing a precursor to the X-wing, a contemporary (that doesn't show up in movies), or keep it as a successor (like it was before). Seems like the infinitely less painful thing to do is just keep them post-Endor. Also, ditto for those TIEs, which are in pretty much the same boat as the E-wing.
Personally, it seems obvious that this is a scene in a ship graveyard, and the ships could be ancient by the time an E-wing and two TIE-Bizzaros fly through.
*EDIT*
How about that ugly H-Wing!
