OT: Episode VII whiplash-realization

By Garrett Lowe, in X-Wing

So I was bored and watched ROTJ this evening.

Got to the end, and while thinking deeply about all of Luke feelings and the character's personal ramifications on Ep. VII's storyline, during Vader/Anakin's unmasking scene I was overcome by the realization that Sebastian Shaw is sadly long dead and Hayden Christensen is very much alive.

Force ghosts are to be expected in this new trilogy and I'm now a touch depressed. :(

JJ, please, do not hire this man.

Well it did take 3 men to play Darth Vader. You had James Earl Jones the voice, you had David Prowse the Body, and then Sebastian Shaw who was the saved and unmasked Darth Vader.

You got to admit that is one big character if it took 3 men to pull it off. That's not including the stunt double Bob Anderson.

Do not use Hayden as the ghost. Use Sebastion.

You ask me, if Vader appears in any form as a force ghost, it should be in the Vader outfit. Why?

Well. It was kind of the most defining part of his life, to say the least. I understand the whole, "You appear as you once were when you were good" but I call BS. Vader was totes redeemed at the end.

So why not have him appear like that?

You'll hate me. The reason he wouldn't / shouldn't is because when Vader saved his Son he died and Ani was brought back to life. They are two diffrent entities. That being said I could totally see Luke expecting what you wrote above and affter seeing "Vader" runs to him with open arms, only this is thing is a embodiment of everything that made Vader Vader. A frightning Sith Spirit that could easily warp into something out of the Poltergeist 1 or 2 movies.

We really have no idea the extent of how present the original characters will be in this movie. J.J. knows people aren't super cool with the prequels, special editions and George being a little bit questionable for editing choices before he sold Lucasfilm. Alec Guiness is also dead (though Ewan is okay with me and still alive...) but we know next to nothing about the movie aside from some aesthetics and actors and the title. We have no clue if force ghosts will be there. My money would be on it being Yoda -if- they are there. Still this is some WILD speculation.

Was it the same version I saw?

Why would I hate you for having an opposing, critically thinking opinion?

I get what you mean. I have to begrudgingly accept that as the truth, too. Though perhaps it's best just to have Vader come back as a voice.

I hold nothing against Haden, but... Iunno. Seeing him as the force ghost was a bit weird. Not horribly offensive to me because it's not like the other guy was recognizable anyway but eh, iunno.

it made no sense to me either.

If vader/annikins ghost is in his prime so should kenobi and yodas.

The original 'annikin' watching luke should have been kept.

its just a continuity things isnt it... the prequels were not that well recieved so lucas used the re-edits to hammer in 'its the same saga... honest'

Bring in James Earl Jones and were good...

As a side note would anyone be opposed to having Liam Neison do a force ghost, be nice to have him to redeem his poorly used character

To everyone opposing the use of Hayden Christiansen as the Ghost to unify the movies in the revised editions, I ask you:

Who is that other guy beside Yoda and Obi-Wan, then?

Because that's not Vader at the time of his death. Vader was bald. And missing a limb or three.

"But when he died he becomes one with the Force and takes on a more wholesome appearance, so it's how he would look without the lava and being just the worst at defending against lightsaber de-limbing."

But, Anakin's 45 at the time of his death. That man originally shown there is 78, and looks nothing like what we actually know Vader looked like before the lava and the awful fighting.

There's no reason why becoming one with the Force ages your appearance by three decades. It sure didn't with Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Hayden in his prime was not the best choice (best choice probably being cast a mid-forties Hayden look-alike). But he was an easy and sensible choice to replace the man who only fits before the prequel trilogy was made, before you have any details about Vader.

I dont mind annikin in his prime *if* the others are but if he can spent etenity being young and chipper its a bit harsh ben and yoda have to do aeons as pensioners :)

Also if you look at it they just put his head on the same body and slimmed it down to be in proportion it's really lazy as well as being an insult to the original actor.

I bet a young yoda looks like kermit though....

Kermit--" yoda.... I am your father!"

yoda--" but that means miss piggy.... no.. nooooooooo!"

Vader: "No luke, I AM your father..."

Luke: "Nooooooooooooo!"

*Obi wans force ghost appears*

Obi wan: "Actualy Luke, I'm your father."

Vader and Luke: "What?!"

Obi wan: "I'm sorry Anakin. You spent all your time hanging with Palpatine, and Amidala was a hot chick, so..."

Vader: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

But, Anakin's 45 at the time of his death.

Not in my canon he isn't...

Number error or prequel trilogy commentary?

Matt Latner was an amazing Anakin.

While it would be a bad idea to use him, since most movie-only viewers wouldn't know who he was or recognize his voice, his portrayal of Anakin is amazing.

Do not use Hayden as the ghost. Use Sebastion.

He's been dead for 20 years. I don't think he's available.

I honestly don't know what they're going to do. It kinda scares me, 'cos I fully expect Force ghosts, if not in VII, then later on in the series.

Yoda's easy, he's a puppet. Kenobi's fairly easy, you use McGregor. He nailed a middle-aged Kenobi in III and could likely do well as a geriatric version. Qui-Gon's also fairly simple, pay Neeson for a couple days of filming. Anakin's hard though... if you portray him as Vader in the suit it becomes very easily done, but seems wrong. If you use some older actor, it's more accurate, but kinda weird. If you use Christensen I blow my stack during the film and storm out.

Your move JJ. I suggest you find an actor in his 50s that looks like Shaw.

Considering that Luke is not likely the central character, I don't think that there will be any force ghosts at all. Unless someone is just seeing some random old guy.

I'll second that, mostly. He was a really fantastic Anakin.

David Prowse is still alive.

McGregor won't be coming back to star wars to quote the man "Star Wars fans are f***ing w***ers, I've seen Phantom Menace once"

He knows it's a PoS he's not proud to have it on his filmography and feels zero need to defend against criticism.

If I recall correctly, his statement was more along the lines of, "The people I met weren't fans, they were the kinds of people that push others out of the way for autographs they'll sell on Ebay."
