The Team Covenant Aces

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

I think KineticOperator has a Warthog list he wants to run.

I was on the recieving end of that list a few days ago. I'm still traumatised. I'd really like to see how it flies against someone a little more talented than me.

Aaron (KineticOperator) is one of the most interesting list builders I've ever met. If there was an award for most interesting list builder in this league he'd win it hands down. Well.... There's Dom too I guess.

Dum de dum, flying casual is relaxing, oh look, a TIE fighter!

Well, enough of that. Dum de dum...

I’ve been involved off and on in the Xwing community since late 2012. One of the first places I started playing was online on VASSAL. I’ve met a lot of really cool people and played a lot of great games with them. I’ve been running leagues of different games for years including the Lambda City Xwing league in Kansas City. I’ve wanted to run a VASSAL league for some time to show off the talent that platform has to offer while getting to see the games that I want to see played. Who doesn’t want to see Theorist v Pheaver II? I know I do! So I started poking around and asking people If they wanted to do something like a league. I got a very positive response. I also got in touch with some cool people who might want to broadcast or give out some prize support. I wanted to make it fun.

The Schedule

http://challonge.com/TCA

The Aces

Dom Cairo- Dom

Lyle Hayhurst- Sozin

Michael Juneau – Mu0n

Tyler Tippett – Starslignger72

Scott Williams- MrFroggies

Jeff Jones- Theorist

Aaron Bonar- KineticOperator

Morgan Reid- Morgan

Paul Heaver- Pheaver

Dallas Parker – Texx

Richard White – Kelvan

Anthony Rossi- Sideslip

The Format

This will be a weekly round robin of every player. The Aces will submit a link of a 100pt list each week to me and I will post them online so you know what lists are facing each other. I’ll post game times on the teamcovenant.com page. There will be a top 4 single elmination tournament at the end of the season to determine our winner.

I’ve been talking with Zach Bunn from Team Covenant to get some really cool prize support. Since some of Aces already have about everything FFG has to offer we want the top 4 to have something unique to only the Aces League.

Games will be untimed (I’d love to do timed but it’s just too difficult online). The Outer Rim Smugglers will be doing a video each week on the Aces as well and Monday Night Xwing will do live commentary on games from time to time!

What’s Legal?

If it’s released on VASSAL its legal. This means we will see wave 6 ships. Make sure to keep up to date on the newest releases. I’ll be sure to remind everyone when Mu0n comes out with something.

We Will be Opening The Aces For Invites At The End Of The Season.

The bottom 2 players will play a group of players looking to get into the league. Details for this phase in the season will be announced later.

We Will Start Season 1 on 1/6/14.

Players will be giving me their squads before this date and squad matches will be posted then. I will be posting a weekly write up analyzing each match and predicting who I think will win. You can track the progress of the league on the Challonge site.

Hopefully this helps stir the Metagame and shows off some cool lists in the process.

Good Hunting! I’ll be back for week 1.

We Will Start Season 1 on 1/6/14. Wow! You can time travel!! That's awesome. No go into the future and tell us how FFG will fix the Tie Advanced :)

Seriously, I'll be watching!

I'm new to Vassal, and I'm trying to get a handle on it right now. In regards to etiquette, is it cool to drop into a room where a game like this is being played, or is it customary to wait for the logs?

If the game is unlocked then generally people wont care if you want to watch. I know most of the guys in this wont mind at all. That being said please make sure not to accidentally mess with stuff. We have had issues in the past of people hitting buttons that shouldn't be hit and such.

The community online has been really great in regards to helping get started, listbuilding, strategy, etc.

I didn't even know an observer could press buttons. Thanks for the heads up.

Like Starslinger said, if the room is unlocked then it's fine to enter. It's fine to ask questions and talk with the players. My only caveat to that would be to Tournament/League games. If you enter one of these rooms, It's good form to just observer, like you would at a live tournament.

Not going to lie one of my first thoughts was wanting to figure out some kind of Fantasy X-wing system... hmmmmm...

edit: Alright 4 person fantasy league, once lineups are posted we snake draft 200 pts worth of ships out of the Ace's lists each (this leaves a 400 pt waiver pool).

Each week we "start" 100pts worth of ships from our bench.

Scoring system is as followed:

5 pt for finishing off a ship.

1 pt per damage dealt.

1 pt per ion token dealt.

1 pt per stress token dealt.

1 pt per enemy ship blocked (+2 if it forces them to end on an asteroid, kill credit if it kills them)

1 pt token knocked off or stolen (think Palob or Wes)

-3pts if destroyed

...hmm will think of more.

Also in the tournament/league games there will be a live cast done via twitch for some of them with others watching that you can talk with on those chat systems. Always an enjoyable time. If you would like to have updates about what game is being cast and where follow @Xwing_Broadcast on twitter as the casters try and update that place with games going on.

You can feel free to post all over the TC page for that. Also should I update weekly on this page like MajorJuggler's tournament pages or make new ones each week?

If you ever wanted to drop in and watch any of my games please feel free to do so. I'll even do you one better, feel free to ask questions to help improve your understanding of the keyboard short cuts and general information. I'm also happy to help teach newer players learn Vassal.

That's very kind of you. If I can ever get the time to really make this happen I'll take you up on that offer.

Nice idea, Kelvan!

Wanted to get this question answered.

Should I post the weekly updates on this thread like the Major Juggler Tournament updates?

Makes sense - although you might have to start a new topic, have the ladder at the top and reserve the first 11 posts so you can update each round on the front page without everyone having to scroll through 20 pages of random banter.

I'd start a new thread every week and link back to the old ones in it, think it's cleaner / keeps the threads focused on each weeks matchups.

This is a neat idea! LEAGUE FOR A LEAGUE!

If I ever get some quiet time. At this point I just use it to see moves for ships.

Fleshed it out over on TC if anyone is interested: http://teamcovenant.com/stmack/2014/12/11/fantasy-x-wing/

edit: hmmm so it's been pointed out by Sideslip over on TC that I missed the part that the lists are new every week. That means it'd have to be ran in more of a daily fantasy / salary cap style. I explain that a bit more in the comments over there but feel free to ask questions if curious.

THAT IS MAHOGANY

Who has a big enough pair to fly scum? Does vassal have the starviper dial yet?

I'm not a big vassal player, but to be honest I wouldn't want to play Wave 6 Vassal until FFG releases their Wave 6 products.

One thing I've found is that I buy more products because I can play online with all the cards... Its why I have 4 shuttles. I played lists I didn't have access to and liked so much I bought them. I'm not the only one with this story.

I wonder if there is anyone who plays x-wing on vassal that has not bought x-wing minis?

I could see FFG getting concerned about competition from vassal cutting into their sales if this were the case, but my feeling is that it's probably helping them much more than it's hurting (if it's hurting them at all). I think people use vassal to supplement tabletop play, and end up more invested in the game than they would otherwise have been.

Thing is, people who wouldn't buy the miniatures, wouldn't do it Vassal or not. But it is a powerful advertising tool for existing players that can try out wild builds and later on buy the ships, like Kelvan mentioned.

It happened to me when i played 40k too, with plenty of lists on fifth edition, like a 1500 point Mephisto, 3 stormravens, and 5x5 assault squads with melta on Twin linked flamerbacks. It was quite fun to play. I wouldn't had bought a single stormraven if it wasn't for that list.
