I note that to do a barrel roll or boost, you can measure to see whether you hit something. Does this apply for moving off the map? Or can you barrel roll off the map unintentionally?
A Question About Moving Off the Map
Yes, you can pre-measure to keep from running away.
Can you point me to an FAQ or a page in the rules that indicates that? Part of the reason I am asking is a difference of opinion in our gaming group and we can't seem to find a direct spot that says as much.
Thanks again.
To elaborate a bit further, there is an FAQ that says you cannot barrel roll off the map and then move back on (movement questions of the latest FAQ - it says if you barrel rolled off then you are gone). The rule book says you can measure to see if you overlap a ship or obstacle (but not map edge specifically - page 8).
This makes it seem somewhat that you might be able to barrel roll of the map and perhaps by accident since there seems to be no mention of measuring for that specific thing.
My impression has been that when you BR/Boost your final position must be one you can legally occupy. If you're off the board you couldn't legally be there.
What StevenO said. It's not a case of pre-measuring a barrel roll or boost, it's a case of not being able to legally complete the move and so having to do something else. With a maneuver, if you go off, you go off.
FAQ, Page 17 under Actions and Game Effects
Q: Can a ship decloak or perform a boost or barrel roll action that would cause it to go outside the play area (and thus flee the battlefield)?
A: Yes. If a player performs a boost or barrel roll that causes it to go outside the play area, it flees the battlefield and is immediately destroyed.
So you can indeed boost or barrel roll off the playing area.
In competitive play you need to declare your direction and it appears that off-map is a legal option, just not a good option.
In standard play, you can pre-measure to avoid this.
Yeah, in a tournament, if you boost or BR off, you're dead.
That covers it all right. My gaming group is a bit vindictive since I tend to be the 'rules' man. So, for us, it's tournament rules!
Thanks for the comments.
In the official FFG FAQ version 4.0 on the 12.21.2015 its says on page 15 under Actions and Game effects :
Q : Can a ship decloack or perform a boost or barrel roll that would cause it to go outside the play area (and thus flee the battelfield) ?
A : No. A ship cannot decloack or perform a boost or barrel roll if this would cause its base to go outside the play area.
And also..
Q : When a player wishes to perform a boost action, can he measure to see if his ship can perform a boost before committing to this action (similar to barrel roll) ?
A : Yes. In competitive and premier events, the player must declare the direction before attempting the maneuver (see "Competitive Play" on page 5).
Yeah, in a tournament, if you boost or BR off, you're dead.
Incorrect. FFG changed this ruling a while ago. It impossible to boost, barrel roll, or decloak off the edge.
EDIT: Reading dates is hard.
Edited by WWHSDYep, this ruling is no longer correct, and is a good example of why it's perilous to trust old search results in a living game.
I'm not quite sure why it was necessary for Jacknight to correct it though.

NECROMANCY...
And also a great example of why old rules questions are best left dead. Take a thread that effectively "ended" in DEC 2014, hold it up against a FAQ that was a year later in DEC 2015, and happen to mention that six months later in May 2016.
Unfortunately the rules of this game do shift around a bit which makes old ruling irrelevant and can confuse any of us. I mean FFG has completely reversed several rules after they worked fine for years which is really painful when you don't immediately see and dive into every new FAQ and tournament rule release.
I just like that someone'a first ever post on the forums was necromancy on a 1.5 year old thread in the rules subforum to correct what was at the time a correct answer. It's fascinating to me.

Not to mention baffling, bizarre, odd, strange, sociopathic, and a host of other adjectives....

I can sometimes see it because they may for some reason first find that old topic using some kind of search engine. Even then it really isn't an excuse because you'd still need to wade through the signup process just to post that and should have had an easier time finding much more current threads on the topic.
Necromancy has its uses especially if nothing has changed but that can even be hard for long time members to recognize when it's appropriate.

Your 1 and only post was to resurrect a 2 year old thread that is now out of date? Ugh.

And the amusing part is he's quoting a FAQ that's also out of date, because there's been two more FAQs since then.
