Covering my meta bases

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing

So with the onslaught of new ships I wanted to start looking at soft counters to the likely ships we'll see on the tables.

What are the things we should keep in mind to be prepared?

Currently I look at it like this:

Phantoms can be beaten by higher PS or mini swarms

Falcons are susceptible to swarms as well

Dash can be beaten by high PS maneuverability

So when list building, what are some other things to keep in mind?

Step 1: fly what you like.

Step 2: Become very good with what you like.

Step 3: wreck things

Step 1: fly what you like.

Step 2: Become very good with what you like.

Step 3: wreck things

QFT

Fat and Fatter Falcons aren't going anywhere.

Rebel control/ Tact Bwings are both a solid build and a good counter to most things.

But unless you're flying at premier level, fly what you like or what you're good at, and then get better with it, and then learn how to beat all the Meta Stuff with it.

I would like to consider my flying at a pretty decent level, thus the query.

With this query, I like to think the following:

With my lists (always have multiple options), which match-up do I fear the most?

Which of these am I probably going to see?

What can I change about my tactics or list to better that match-up?

What can I change about my tactics or list to better the mirror match?

Nothing personal but I'm really starting to dislike this quote. Thank you for making our interests seem unimportant enough for a small piece of digital space.

I'm already at step 3. Would you like to add a step four?

Maybe something like get good at ships you don't like.

An understanding of why things are good against your selected ships is part of step 2, and if you're already wrecking things with what you've got toy around with things viewed as sub-optimal and see if you can make them work/work better.

I don't mean to offend but I don't need to fly fat Han to know what it does, I'll just fly against it.

Yeah I don't think you have to either. But lots of practice games are good for learning how to predict him.

Mainly also a key for learning to be better in a decent amount of time is to learn something that has already been tested. A good build.

The first thing we tell new sc2 players is to take a real pro bulild and learn that.

Then they can learn what really works against what when people are playing intelligently and correctly

On highly advanced metas with a lot of information channeling. The best really are just expected to make the best build choice call. We do see that already in xwing too. Though there's more minute variation that makes a difference in this game versus say magic. In magic you have more large options as there are more pieces and if you counter the meta right it doesn't matter that you lose to something else that could have been common.

Here for instance r2d2 vs gunner can have a big impact.

I'm noticing this now with my choice of build. The difference between using ptl and predator makes a big difference in ease of winning versus one style of list to another. Ptl guarantees I have a 60% or so against the Han and dash builds but a muh harder time versus phantom 5 tie and rebel control.

Predator is so much more helpful in most other matchups but has a really really hard time vs Han and dash

These are estimates based on real playtest, feeling about how easy it is to win after discussing if my playtester opponent made any eggregious mistakes. difference deployments and tactics are tried also, quickly determines the general plan for the matchup.
