When in the EU do phantoms get made?

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Right

seen all the films

played x wing and tie fighter in the 90s

i *thought* i remembered phantoms being part of the game 'tie fighter' but since ive been playing it again i know they are not, its defenders.

In my old 'essential guide to vessels and vehciles' the defender , the YT2400, the e wing etc etc are in there but no phantom.

So where is the phantom first written about or appears in a game.

In another thread (my end of an empire thread) someone said it was an early tie project but in my head its a late prototype... where might have i got that idea from?

According to the wikia, as a result of the destruction of the first Death Star, the Empire commissioned the project to modify V38 Assault Fighters with Stygium Crystal cloaking devices around 3ABY as a means of escalation against the Rebel's superior fighters.

EDIT: And it first appeared (only appearance?) in Rebel Assault II. I remember my dad playing it when I was only a little toddler.

Yes the first time I remember seeing them was in rebel assault as well. Not sure when as far as in book form tho.

Correct their first and most notable appearance was in RA2... But they were also in empire at war forces of corruption if I recall correctly

Rebel assault two was their first appearance, it was on okay rail shooter with some dire on foot sections and typically cheesy fmv that was so common in the 90s.

Otherwise the only other game I saw them in was empire at war the corruption expansion.

Timeline wise they were overseen by Vader so it's pre Jedi but I think it's post hoth.

It wasnt only created to deal with REBs. The Grand Admiral that was head of the TIE Phantom Project had them made to kill TIE Defenders if they were ever used by Rogue IMPs. It was in development before Yavin. Captain Fel tested it out, felt that it would be better used as a stealthed long range cats eye.

As I recall, the actual stygium cloaking device was older technology that got resurrected for the Phantom. Also, a couple of rebel pilots infiltrated the manufacturing facility and destroyed it, stealing one of the phantoms before its own self-destruct mechanism destroyed the only functioning model.

As much as I love this ship, I find it interesting that FFG is really digging pretty deep to find these ships, not only this one, but the Decimator, as well.

It gets made about the same time as the events of ESB. It is also pretty much gone right away and never saw wide spread use. This was because Rookie One(worst hero name ever) and Ru Murleen destroyed the factory and all remaining prototypes when they escaped in one themselves. Then the one they had self destructed. So the tech was pretty much lost.

I love how open and shut the plot for the Phantom is though.

"Let's make a super ship that wins the war!"

"Oh no! All of our super ships were destroyed and Microsoft Word failed to save the file!"

Its not that designs werent saved, the material used to make cloaking devices for really small craft are hard to come by. Imdaar Alpha was badly damaged as well as the factory and SSD that was stocked with lots of them.

Some still remain. After all Fel was flying a prototype Phantom before ANH at a flight evaluation field.

Rebel Assault

the phantom was seen in rebel assault 2 and in the strategy game Empire ar War Forces of corruption there it was one of the newer tie variants alongside the New implemented Tie Interceptor, scout and Defender

Perhaps the phantom should have been a 'unique' ship in the game.

Terrible marketing and business plan but perhaps better for 'lore' :)

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I must have played rebel assault in the 90s as well and totally forgot about it because i know when the phantom and defender wave came out the only thing iwas like 'what the hell is *that*' was the e wing.

so along those lines do we foresee a cheaper v38 assault fighter sans cloak? perhaps with an extra shield?

Not entirely correct. Grand Admiral Martino Batch did head Stygium cloaking development (Used in the Phantom, the Tarkin blew up Aeten II to secure crystal supplies), but the weapon designed to kill TIE Defenders was Grand Admiral Thrawn's Missile Boat. Thrawn tried to compete with the high technology Zaarin was throwing around and ultimately baited him into a trap with (oddly) a cloaking device aboard the Vorknyx. The prototype exploded when it jumped into hyperspace as Zaarin tried to escape with it under cloak.

Phantoms seem to fall into that space between New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Apparently they were all supposed to be destroyed when Imdaar exploded but I always liked to believe a handful were out on extended deployment. Production shifted to more conventional starfighters, and the Phantoms were only ever maintained, not new ones produced.

Love how the rarest ship in lore is the most common one in game....

a bit like who marneus calgar turns up to lead the ultramarines in every 30 man skimish....

You would of had a few squadrons in the field for testing in various enviroments but over all it'll be a very rare fighter and next to impossible to replace combat losses as the crystals went up with the production facility.

Though some Stygium Crystals surely still existed, The Empire could never field their devastating fighter en masse as they desired.

Quite a shame, for them at least. It was a strong design.

No they used the prototype death star laser to crack open the planet and harvested the last of the crystals for the tie phantoms.

Had the phantom seen full deployment the rebels and any other faction would of been doomed unable to fight a foe they could not see.

Ahh what could of been.

The TIE phantom is from Rebel Assault 2 and is the central antagonistic force of the plot: you get your ass handed to you by them, you investigate them then you're assigned to capture one, somehow taking down both the Terror, the SSD they were stored on, and their production facility of Imdaar Alpha. Somehow every last TIE phantom is either on the Terror or inside Imdaar Alpha and two carefully placed shots in the reactors of both RotJ style takes out all the phantoms but yours. Yours then gets on the wrong side of remote self destruct by Vader.

Forces of Corruption features them as a buildable unit at The Maw, and that's pretty much it. Was very surprised indeed when I saw them in the Wave 4 announcement.

The part about the Grand Admiral and he having them created to kill REBs and counter TIE Defender was from Star Wars Insider.

The part with Captain Fel test flying the Phantom before ANH was from the new "Imperial Handbook."

I wonder what the new canon will do with them. I mean, they saved the Carrack of all things. Despite dropping Despayre, one of the DSI research facilities they salvaged from Legends is called "Desolation Station" of all things.

I wouldnt worry about it to much. Everything old is canon till contradicted, alot of writting designed only to attack older material would ruin its origin. At least under the new guidelines made by LFL only canon material can be produced for toys and collectables ect.

Interesting thing is all past SW games are still undecided if the will be Legends or not. I guess thats ok since most have been made into novels.

You might be excited to know that they just made a full scale black series Storm Commando and Black Hole Storm Trooper.

3 ABY, it has 2 appearances, Rebel Assault 2 (where they are all destroyed), and Empire at War: Forces of Corruption (cameo)

I feel like Rebel Assault II was really popular - I never played computer games, but I did get through pretty much the whole thing at a friend's house. The combination of well-known cheats, a reasonable storyline for 10 year olds, and gameplay that didn't stress the computers available to most kids probably made it fairly common, while things that were a bit less accessible both story-wise and tech, like X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, didn't gain as much traction (even though that was the only one of the X-Wing series I ever actually played).
