When in the EU do phantoms get made?

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I feel like Rebel Assault II was really popular - I never played computer games, but I did get through pretty much the whole thing at a friend's house. The combination of well-known cheats, a reasonable storyline for 10 year olds, and gameplay that didn't stress the computers available to most kids probably made it fairly common, while things that were a bit less accessible both story-wise and tech, like X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, didn't gain as much traction (even though that was the only one of the X-Wing series I ever actually played).

As popular as Rebel Assault was, I am going to say that the X-wing and Dark Forces series were much more popular.

i think 'tie fighter' was the one everyone remembers as being totally awesome.

probably a reason 'good old games' released that and 'xwing' first when they got the licence....

x wing was *good* but tie fighter really polished it with the 98 edition

The TIE phantom is from Rebel Assault 2 and is the central antagonistic force of the plot: you get your ass handed to you by them, you investigate them then you're assigned to capture one, somehow taking down both the Terror, the SSD they were stored on, and their production facility of Imdaar Alpha. Somehow every last TIE phantom is either on the Terror or inside Imdaar Alpha and two carefully placed shots in the reactors of both RotJ style takes out all the phantoms but yours. Yours then gets on the wrong side of remote self destruct by Vader.

Forces of Corruption features them as a buildable unit at The Maw, and that's pretty much it. Was very surprised indeed when I saw them in the Wave 4 announcement.

It wasnt only created to deal with REBs. The Grand Admiral that was head of the TIE Phantom Project had them made to kill TIE Defenders if they were ever used by Rogue IMPs. It was in development before Yavin. Captain Fel tested it out, felt that it would be better used as a stealthed long range cats eye.

Where's that from?

The part about the Grand Admiral and he having them created to kill REBs and counter TIE Defender was from Star Wars Insider.

The part with Captain Fel test flying the Phantom before ANH was from the new "Imperial Handbook."

Would it be possible at all to link that Star Wars insider article? Because that seems entirely wrong to me- it's the Missile Boat that was supposed to be this, not the TIE Phantom. It sounds like the editor had confused the two.

I knew that Fel evaluated the TIE Phantom. Fel has some remarks for a number of starfighters actually within the Imperial Handbook.

Love how the rarest ship in lore is the most common one in game....

a bit like who marneus calgar turns up to lead the ultramarines in every 30 man skimish....

The rarest ship in the lore is the Falcon. There's only one of those! Yeah, I said it. What'cha gonna do? :P

The Falcon, sure - but that goes for the Moldy Crow, the Dauntless, the Bright Star, pretty much any of the titles except A-Wing Test Pilot ;)

I can't post links not that I think it would even be online.

Why couldn't the Phantom and misile boat both had ben made to counter Defenders? They both have elements the other doesn't that helpem counter the Defender while having drawbacks. Phanton was designed while the Defender was being designed so the designerswouldnt have the info to incoprerate data on how the defender would be used by its pilots. Missile Boat would have had that information used in its design, problem is missiles can be countered.
