End of an Empire, battle idea...

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I'm thinking about putting on a 'late war' (to use a historical gamer term) game for my friends this weekend.

I was thinking about making it really post endor.

Alll e wings, phantoms and defenders etc.

Sure there would be old stuff in service but i want to make it look really removed from the OT ethos for a change.

Im thinking to limit ship choice to:

Rebel:

A wing

B Wing

E wing

YT2400

Imperial:

Phantom

Defender

VT49

Sound about right to you guys or should i be taking the B wings out. In some of the EU comic books you see A wings in service really late but no B wings. I think 'crimson empire' had a wings on the rebel cruisers/frigates but no B's but the B wing was new at endor

Views.

I'll also remove any 'unique' cards for people 'dead' post endor!

When exactly does the empire collapse anyway ?

Depends on what you believe.

if you like lucas's remake on the DVDs about 30 seconds after palpatine dies. Everyone in the galaxy has a huge party and all the millions of stormtroopers, tie pilots, army soldiers all go 'fair cop guv' and start taking up farming.

if you like the EU novels about 30 to 3000 years after endor depending on the series. in the most popular ones Admiral Thrawn leads the empire after palpatines death and palpatine is later cloned and leads a seperate empire.

in some of the late graphic novels you have imperial 'jedis' (imperial knights) which are a bit liek jedis mixed with red imperial guards, separatist remant factions, rogue admirals all sorts.

Depends on what you mean, the Empire never really collapsed, however, they finally stopped getting a streak of oppressive leaders and left the NR alone. At that point, the Empire wasn't much of an empire though. Basically probably around 12-15 ABY is when the Empire stopped really being an Empire. (for reference, the Battle of Endor took place 4 ABY).

The Phantom is actually an early war fighter project that got totally destroyed before Battle of Endor. The Decimator only makes one appearance in a pre-Hoth post-Yavin area, but I wouldn't say it is obsoleted. TIE Defenders are so expensive that Wedge was surprised when he found out a full 2 squadrons (24 fighters) existed. I wouldn't remove B-wings, but I'd probably make B-wing/E2 mandatory maybe. I'd also add TIE Interceptors because they are still in service for a REALLY long time. Lambdas, and Bombers can probably also make it on.

Yea, the Empire really stops being bad after a while. Jaina Solo's husband (Soontir Fel's youngest son) was the head of the Empire when he suggested Imperial Knights, because he was trying to integrate the Empire with the Galactic Alliance, and wanted to de-infamise the Jedi.

I think it collapse when the Vong takes over.

Yeah I don't believe the hokey feel good collapse 30 seconds after.

I think it collapse when the Vong takes over.

No, in fact, that is around the time they stop fighting and become friends with the NR. Of course, at this point as I stated earlier, it is barely an Empire, secluded to a very small part of space.

Ok I found a map of the galaxy around 20-25 ABY (directly before the Vong):

NJO_galaxy_map.JPG

Note how small the empire is in the top corner. (of course it has more than the 3 planets listed, that is just the main planets, Bastion is the capital)

I know in one of the later xwing novels onboard one of the star destroyers in new republic service had tie fighters and cloak shape fighters on it. Not to mention they still were in xwingd

If you're going for a late war feel, E-wing and B-wing are the Rebel ships and TIE interceptor and TIE defender are the Imperial ones. Y-wings and Z-95s are antique, the TIE fighter's pretty much gone, the phantom project is long buried, the Scimitar Assault Bomber has replaced the TIE bomber. Nothing beyond that is outright gone although it's aging.

Wave 5 I'm assuming is available because it's new rather than because it's especially era appropriate?

If you're going to a really removed, very EU feel I'd go with these limits. I put Wave 5 in because I figure you want to use the new stuff.

IMPERIAL

Must use at least one TIE defender.

Available ships: TIE defender, TIE interceptor, VT-49.
Special Rules

Maarek Steele may use the TIE defender for a cost of 36 points.
Soontir Fel and Kir Kanos are unavailable.

Dead crew upgrades (Vader, Jerjerrod) are unavailable. (Technically Isard would be dead by now too but she's too good on the Decimator to miss.)

REBEL

Must use at least one E-wing.

Available ships: E-wing, B-wing, YT-2400

Special Rules

Surviving X-wing pilots (Wedge, Luke, Wes, Tarn, Hobbie) may upgrade to the E-wing for 5 points.

Really good idea but I would say let them have standard ties. The tie fighter is timeless, although if you chose not to I could see why.

When we're getting late enough that the X-wing is leaving service the interceptor has long surplanted the TIE fighter in Legends terms.

The fact that people ever believed that the celebrations were the end was an actual fall for the empire, and that those riots were not quickly and violently quelled, honestly concerns me.

Yeah I don't believe the hokey feel good collapse 30 seconds after.

Good, because nobody ever claims that one happened. ROTJ shows celebrations, but not the end of the war. And we all know based on real-world experience that plenty of wars continue long after one side has held a victory party.

(At least one of the EU books explicitly addresses this and has a character talking about how the celebration quickly turned into a massacre when the stormtroopers arrived.)

yeah but one of the celebrations is on CORUSCANT!

Like the ISB woudlnt be pulling peoples fingernails out in basements before someone set off the first firework....

Lucas clearly intended that scene to wrap it all up as 'the end of the war' and had no intention at all of a further three films at that point.

Clearly he got a tax bill and decided he needed some more money

I can't even debate this anymore. That's obviously what they did!

.. im just gonna go with, george, you made some interesting decisions. can i be annoyed at canon?

those celebrations on coruscant make no sense.

those celebrations on coruscant make no sense.

Of course it makes sense. People heard the news and started to celebrate, and the brief shot in ROTJ shows the celebration before the stormtroopers arrived to restore order. It only "makes no sense" if you assume that a celebration is the same thing as the end of the war.

I think social control is only gonna get easier with technology, not harder.

TIE Interceptors or at the very least shield moded Interceptors and RG Interceptors that represent the "Star Hunter TIE Interceptor."

Is the Lambda still in use?

As for the coruscant celebration... its clearly a city wide huge party thats been going on for a bit... unless everyone was stockpiling party supplies in case the emperor had a heart attack or 'road to damascus' episode :)

Honestly, its clear that lucas put those scenes in to say 'look everyone is happy and evil is defeated' to remove any ambiguity and , i imagine, to shoot down any EU stuff he didnt like about continued war.

But its clearly a 'wrapping the film up for idiots' bit who woudl otherwise be going 'so have the rebels totally won then?'

Back on track.

So i like the idea of

IMPS

Defender (min 1)

Tie Ints (must have shield upgrade) [in the EU its stated that later ints are fitted with shields as they cant keep up with replacing lossses)

VT49s

Rebels

A wings (no prototypes or test pilots... they'd all be too old or dead by then)

B wings (at least one E2 for every normal)

E wings

YT2400

I want it to *look* like a 'future war' of the star wars universe... where it would be going if the war kept on and on and it would be like 50 years later but no one had the resources for new designes *but* using available models.

Now the question is

Who is dead?

well everyone from 'yavin' other than Luke Wedge and Keyan

So for rebels...

No bigs, porkins, dutch....

who else

No vader obviously but the imperial 'named pilots' are largely all EU, do we see many die in the films who we know the name of who are on cards.

Does jendon survive endor?

I also noticed someone suggested using homebrew special rules. If thats the case if you have Star Hunter TIE Interceptors I would allow them having a plus 2 red dice and or maybe count all red manuvers on dial as white since the Star Hunter was the most advanced fighter you see the Empire use until you get into the the era that takes place 130 years after yavin.

Five attack interceptors? Kinda excessive. A Starhunter's a shielded interceptor with heavy weapons (torpedo/missile slot most likely) but it's also fairly post-Vong.

Legendswise it was a riot. The Empire was in disarray after its power structure got decapitated. One man had set himself up to hold all the strings and when he died the strings got dropped.

The riot was quite violently surpressed soon after by Isard.
