[Epic ship scratchbuild] Storm Commando Escort Carrier

By MacrossVF1, in X-Wing

Mostly sanding today though I did start on an additional structure that goes on top of the ship towards the rear.

SICK

Didn't really have time to do much yesterday, except sanding, so I didn't bother with an update. Today on the other hand I have something to show! Of course with all the excitement surrounding the Imp Raider reveal, it seems fitting that I can continue to present news on another epic Imp ship. :)

Got around to mount the ship on an epic base, in this case borrowed from a Corvette. Also started on the engines. The second engine picture show all the individual parts of a single engine.

Even if FFG finally showed their epic, I'm still more excited by this one. BTW, this last pic looks nice!

Ori Kandosii!

Started on the panel lines, in this case, the front wings. This is the reason why I haven't glued many pieces into place yet, otherwise this would have been quite a bit more problematic. The lines are more visible on the right wing because I took a pencil and filled them in bit. Since most pictures of the ship doesn't show the panel lines very well, or indeed at all, I took inspiration from the Raider. The idea is to cover most of the ship with similar lines.

Looking Good Bro...

Lots more panel lines and I'm finally adding some of the smaller details. Of note is that I've sprayed parts of the ship with some black paint as this makes it easier to spot flaws and imperfections.

Lookin good ;)

The turrets has finally gotten some barrels. I think I managed a fairly simple yet effective solution for the up and down movement, really just a tube within another tube. Also, more panel lines, in this case on the back wings.

Work ended early today so I've had time to do some serious work! More panel lines of course, but also finally gluing several of the pieces together. The ship is actually soon finished, the only major work left are the engines and the rest are mostly small details. Also, I just couldn't resist something a bit fun. :D

Engines are in place though they do lack a bit of detailing and the nozzle. The finish line is getting closer!

CECb33.jpg

The engines are finished and the area around the engines are properly detailed by now. I estimate that I will be completely finished with the ship in just a few days!

Fixed a lot of small details around the hangar and began assembling two sets of turrets. The left (grey set) goes onto the nose, and the right set will be placed on either side of the hanger. All turrets will be magnetised and gun barrels moveable.

That looks so cool. Could you take a picture with the same angle but with the turrets in place?

Also, what would you say the difficulty of this project is for you? (I am horrible at plasticard I found when scratch building 40k)

The ship is soon finished so yes, a few more pictures will be forthcoming. :)

This has without a doubt been the most difficult project I've attempted yet. It is similar in scope to this, a mostly scratchbuilt Land Raider for 40k, which I built a little over a year ago. However the Land Raider was shaped like a box whereas the Carrier has been loads of awkward and difficult to measure angles. I feel like half the time I've been praying to whatever deity that may listen that everything will work out in the end and the other half I've felt like I just made crap up on the spot. A lack of proper blueprint, that is a good side, front and top view has obviously not helped matters.

Is that the hull from pigiron? I forget if that's what the site is called, but seeing that rung a bell in my head from 3 years ago.

It is indeed a Pig Iron Ironside that form the base of my Land Raider. Not much left of it though, I cut away the middle and really only saved the sides/trackunits and those two parts are heavily modified as well.

Lots of small details added today. I thought I would be finished with it today but alas the time was not enough. However it will be complete tomorrow so stay tuned!

Ohhh I am really tempted to ask you to make a copy for me too!

I'd love to see this with a couple ships for scale. :)

Please don't, at least not right. At this moment I feel like I never want to build another thing again. :)

Dagnabit! I forgot to include a couple of ships with today's crop of pictures. Sorry!

Anyway, the ship is finished! The building stage that is. I've also applied a coat of primer but for now that's it. The turrets are not included in the pictures as they are all mounted on an assortment of tools for easier painting.

I wonder if you can cast a mold for it. It might be too big though, tis a shame.

I... I kinda want to see this in the 1:270 scale. With a Tie prepped in the launch tube.

I'm not saying you should build one that way. But this thing is epic in all senses. :)

Now this is an Epic ship of the Galactic Empire! This evokes the might of the Imperial Navy.
