[Epic ship scratchbuild] Storm Commando Escort Carrier

By MacrossVF1, in X-Wing

So I've been quiet a few weeks. Well that's because I've been commissioned to scratchbuild an epic sized ship called the Storm Commando Escort Carrier! It originates from Rouge Squadron 3, a game which I myself has never played.

The final size of the ship will be around 40 cm/16 inch which puts it roughly at scale 1/600, assuming the ship is 250m in 'real life'.

The set of pictures I've posted below show the first steps, mainly the inner frame, the magnet lock and aligning system I've used. Yes, the ship is designed as two separate parts for easier transportation. If time allows it, I'll update this thread every day with my progress. So sit back and enjoy. :)

*Edit* Fixed the squashed looking picture above.

I am reserving my likes until I see the end product, but if your previous work is any indication, those likes will be forthcoming

How fortunate for me then that I don't quite care about likes. :P

Huh. All my sources point it at being 150m. But if the client wants it at 250, he gets it at 250.

Anyways, omg I love this thing! HypeHypeHypeHype!

That's the thing, no one seems to be able to quite agree on the exact size. Somewhere around 150-250m. Now I realise I make quite the assumption here but I felt that the hangar bay should probably be large enough to accommodate at least a few TIEs side by side, most likely even three or four. So starting from that I set the hangar opening at about 20m in width and extrapolated the size of the ship from there.

In the game it abducts scientists from a rebel transport, and it is about twice the transports length. It was in the first quarter of the campaign if I remember correctly.

Also, I think the section above the hanger is hollow and holds racks for tie fighters.

How much would it cost to make one a little bigger than the ffg corvette?

I can not wait to see how this one turns out. I really liked that ship in Rebel Strike.

Well it's definitely not petite.

Sounds very reasonable. Looking forward to the progress images Big MAC!

Are you going to wire that bad boy for LED's? Because you should. :)

Cost is something I do not discuss openly, just like I do not reveal who the commissioner is if I can avoid it. I think of it as a confidentiality contract between me and the commissioner. Should the commissioner reveal the info him-/herself, then it's fair game, but not before that.

While that would be awesome, it's not something that's part of this commission. Things like that cost extra and this build is probably expensive enough as is.

And today's update! Added internal support struts and started on the 'skin' (only the top and bottom for now).

More 'skin' added.

Weird question:

How much more work is it to build 2 identical ships at once than it is to build just one at a time?

Asemblely line is always better :P

Looks promising.

Didn't knew that ship before, but I like its concept. Much better than most of the phallic hulls that float around over the EU.

Update! More skin added and also began working on the front wings. They aren't actually attached to the model yet. I'm not sure but they might be a bit too big.

Didn't get much done today but at least I fixed the turret wells.

All the damned awkward angles on this ship is causing big problems for me. At every turn it feels like I'm somewhere from half to a full millimetre off. I'm going to have to do a lot of filling and sanding to fix all the small flaws.

Update! The Hangar bay is finally fixed though the 'floor' piece is not glued into place as I might still decide to add some internal details

Don't forget to add the signature imperial 45 degree angles at the corners of the hangar's ribs..!

Captain Lackwit: I've actually been thinking of doing just that!

Work on the turrets has begun. However it seems I forgot to take pictures of the (almost) finished product so these two pictures will have to do for today. The second one will be finished faster as I copied a lot of the pieces that went into the first one and are just lying around, waiting for me to begin assembly.

Really looking forward to this! Rebel strike is the best star wars videogame I've ever played, and I've suggested in many threads that this ship is the only one I found to have an accurate size to be played on x-wing epic mode.

Keep up the good work!

Finished the second turret (and remembered to take a picture) today. I'm entering the filling and sanding stage right now, which will mean less pictures for a few days. Filling up flaws and sanding them down just isn't very exciting.

CECb15.jpg

Fixed the back wings/fins. I actually made them way too big first so I had to remove them, cut them down to the right size and redo the entire alignment. *Bleeping* *Bleep*! And of course lots of filling and sanding. Boring stuff!
