Women's lib hits the Empire

By mikeespo, in X-Wing

Just opened my Decimator expansion. Awesome. BtW.

Can't help but notice that there is a huge proliferation of women characters for the Empire. Mara Jade, Ysanne Isard, fleet officer card, ruthlessness card.

Hard to understand as there were no Imperial women characters in all the original trilogy.

Oh well. Even the evil Empire must cave to equal rights.... :D

As far as the game goes, I think the Empire has had more female pilots than the Rebellion.

The new canon's done away with sexism in the Empire. Not sure how human supremacist they are: I think it's more they mistreat the outer worlds now.

No recognizable women in the empire. Lots of helmets that could contain either gender.

The rebels have mon mothma and Leia it's a very sexist organization, I hear they only let Leia in as an act of nepotism from her daddy, and mothma because they needed someone to cook and clean.

Why any woman would feel sympathy towards the agents of patriarchy known as the rebel alliance escapes me.

yay. this again.

Are there ANY female Rebel pilots in X wing?

I have no problem with there being female pilots, but I agree that in the movies there are no women depicted in the Empire. Additionally in all the books, novels, comics, etc., it has been established that women, along with Aliens, are under represented if not openly discriminated against. An example of this is Admiral Daala, who even disguised that she was a woman in order to compete in simulator tests. But that is not represented in this game. And again I do not care, but it feels wrong having so many female pilots.

That's because the film's are works of propaganda for those that want a return to the corruption of the old republic, of course the rebel film makers would not want to pay more than a few token women.

PATRIARCHY!!

As of A New Dawn, the rebels prequel novel, the Empire has female Star Destroyer commanders, Rae Sloane* and Storm Troopers. I'm all for that. I love the imperial uniforms, and they look good on the female form. Just don't tart them up.

Jan could go both ways..

Nera, Ibitsam and Jan are all women.

Imperial side you have between 2 and 4 pilots depending on if Whisper and Echo are women or not.

You have for sure Howlrunner and Kath, then you have Echo and Whisper. Echo may be a woman, but Whisper we have no clue on, because there's never been a gender pronoun used for Whisper.

Jan could go both ways..

Err?

There's quite honestly no question that Jan is a women.

Really there's a bisexual joke just begging to be made and that's how you respond?

Jan also isn't a rebel she's a mercenary hired by them from time to time just like katarn.

Since we've seen a couple of the Rogue Squadron pilots so far, my guess is that Plourr Ilo isn't far behind...

Rogue Squadron has had its share of female pilots throughout its career.

No she was a full blown member of the Rebel Alliance. More than you can say for Kath.

I'm still chuckling over the title: I've not heard feminism described as "women's lib" since the early 1980s.

Granted, I'm still furious that Lucas filmed, edited, and did post production on the scene where Mon Mothma and Padme Amidala form the Rebellion- but the decided to cut that scene from Episode 3.

I think it is great. ^__^

Please, not this again!!!

We just had a 2 huge threads on this that ultimately got locked.

Well as an EU nerd it makes me angry because they are totally portraying the Empire the opposite that they are. (I'm not sexist btw, it's just the empire is and they aren't really portraying that) The Empire had a policy called HuMan meaning discrimination against non humans (specism, xenophobia?) and against women. (with notable exceptions to brilliant people like Thrawn, Daala, and "Iceheart"). On a slightly OT note, who wants Admiral Ackbar to be a main supporting character in the new movies?

Of course the Empire had more. The Imperial Navy dwarfed the insurgents, so there would naturally be more females in all roles. :-)

To be fair, that was more the Emperor's opinion, which of course set the tone for the Empire as a whole. But once he was gone, there's no need for that to stay, especially with the Empire shrinking like it did in the Heir to the Empire series, they wouldn't have the luxury of turning away talented people just because they were women any longer.
