I'm sure this is obvious, but I can't find it anywhere. Is it 3'x3' like X-Wing?
Probably a dumb question- how big of a mat is needed?

That's probably going to be the case.
Back august I believe 6' x 3' was the size stated. But that was almost 5 months ago, my memory could be leading me astray.
3x3 or 6x3 depending on game size, going by the Gencon videos/interviews.
Im pretty sure one of the guys in Gencon said that a standard game is 3x6, 300 points.
personally I think a 3x3 would be big enough because I doubt many games will actually use more than that in terms of lateral side to side movement so stretching out the play mat just seems like it will invite stalling (either intentionally or unintentionally) by giving room to run away, (I am not talking about a tactical retreat to avoid getting too close, I am talking full bore running away) or just because player A deploys his ships in one corner and player B deploys in the opposite corner (like what happens alot in X-wing) and now we have all of that extra space to cover before the ships can engage

That tactical retreat aspect may become much more important with new waves, especially if carriers and the like are released. Ships like that may need the space and the ability to run in order to survive long enough for their fighter screen to wear down the opposition.
6 x 3 might be very important in those circumstances, though I agree that right now (admittedly, I haven't actually seen the ships on the table) I may cut it to 3 x 3 for simplicity when I play at home.
I heard its 6x3 which is discouraging, one big draw of x wing is how easy it is to setup games

Yeah, my table will require extensions for sure...and they are already all put in. I am thinking about creating some sort of overlay that I can get out and put on top of my table to make it work.
Something like this might be nice:

I am worried, though, that it would be a pain in the butt to store it, especially since my residence is already short on space. Maybe make it so it can fold? Hmm... anybody else have good ideas on this one?
How big is your table? You dont need anything anywhere near that heavy duty....my table is only 3'x4' and i play a 6x3 quite a lot (and a 6x4 for that matter). When I need an extension, which i rarely do since 1 foot of overhang on each end is perfectly ok, i have a sawhorse that i put up to support ait. They fold away and are minimal fuss
I know that Wally-World (aka Wal-mart) has some 3x3 tables that are pretty inexpensive. So you could pick up a couple to put a 6x3 on. Just grab a 6x4 sheet of plywood to use as a table top.
