perfect setup

By pittplayer, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

i know a lot of you throw all exp's together. i was wondering for those of us not trying to have 50 foot towers of cards what the best blend is, right now i have..

Innsmouth board

Innsmouth @ bgotw encounter and outerworld cards

the 3 dual color ow cards from dp

in/mad, epic battle, blights(house rule on them), all the innsmouth stuff

corruption cards, 1000 young memberships

prefered decks of items, allies, spells, etc

what do you all think? does dp have better encounters then bgotw? how would you all mix it?

Generally, my group plays with all the big box expansions together. However, from time to time, we will separate all the expansions out and play with the base game and a single big box expansion.

The only small box expansion I have is King in Yellow. When we play with that expansion, we don't mix in anything else.

That being said, we always use the madness/injury and epic final battle decks even when we play with a single expansion and regardless of which expansion that is.

As to your setup, I can't speak directly, but there are many out there who have worked out various methods to deal with expansion dilution.

dilution isnt a problem since i only use innsmouth and bgotw encounter and mythos cards, like i said i dont use everything, that is the point, not dilution but custom decks and choosing the cards you want.

any one have lists of say, spell decks they made or mixing mythos decks between different exp's?

Just a thought. When adding Injury/Madness cards into play, wouldn't it be fair to give the investigators a chance to get rid of them through the Arkham Encounters from DH?

(I don't have IH yet - hope to get it on Wed - so maybe there's some way to get "cured" there.. anyway , like I said - just a thought :-)

There is at least one way to cure an injury or madness in IH. It's not really something you can plan to happen, though.

who said life is fair? lol

It's not a big deal at all. The opportunity to cure the I/M cards is extremely rare. Playing a game with I/M cards and no way to cure them is not really a detriment to the players; after all, players choose when to take them, and if they get too many, they can just retire the character.

the reason i ask is i have to update my item decks after getting innsmouth so while i am there i figured i can see if any of you have any ideas for deck customization.

does any body use the benefit cards from DP? or the Opening the third eye type cards from KIY?

I've used the Third Eye/Inner Beast/Azure Flame cards. I do like them, but only in certain situation/certain investigators. Ashcan calling up Azure Flames packed a punch.

They are very situational, but when that situation comes up they work wonders.

Of course. Was that a rhetorical question?

Just last game Sister Mary got Harried. If you don't use the KiY cards, then you can't include those spells either (or you have to then fish those special cards out; I prefer to set up everything).

Inner Beast/Third Eye/Azure Flame are all very good cards. Odds are, there's somebody in the game that can take advantage of the card, and they can be absolutely obscene on the right guy. Any of the 7 stamina characters would love the Third Eye, for instance, as would anyone with low will. That's one of the best spells for Dexter to find. It makes his sanity something appreciable, and his horror checks nothing to sneeze at.

Inner Beast is great for the slow, high sanity guys. Mary and Harvey like that spell.

Azure Flame is a little more situational than the others, but put it on Marie, for example, and watch the sparks fly. It's biggest advantage is that it's a combat spell anyone can cast pretty reliably. That, and the whole magical shotgun thing.

So, yeah, unless I'm doing something specific, those spells will always be in my spell deck. I've only taken out a few of the cards from the item decks, due to perennial uselessness. Throne of Carcosa and Shrine to the Elder Gods come to mind. The Wrack spell. An Enchant Weapon or Milk of Shub-Niggurath. Even trash like the Sedanette comes in handy sometimes, so I just keep it in there, mostly. I like variety.

You can't use the benefit cards without the Dark Pharoah encounters, so I don't know what you're talking about. I think they are really cool, if not overly useful. Psychic and Visions can be amazing in the right groups. If you want to root through your cards, go ahead and put those encounters in there.

thanks for the thoughts flamethrower49, that is a good idea i have been thinking of throwing some dh encounters in the mix, plus they would let me use the benefit cards! cool
