Favorite Way to Play a Decimator

By RagnarokSquadron, in X-Wing

So, I've been tinkering with the new Wave 5 stuff, and I've decided that this is going to be my go-to Imperial list until further notice:

  • Captain Oicuun (42)
  • Soontir Fel + Push The Limit (30)
  • Carnor Jax + Lone Wolf (28)

It's shown it can be pretty nasty in my early playtesting. Giving Carnor the ability to re-roll while still evading for survivability is definitely the way to go, and Oicuun takes on the opponent's big guns while Soontir does Soontir things.

Thoughts on improvement? Do you have a Decimator build you like more? Have you come up with a strategy to get through this build? Give me your thoughts!

I am not a fan of three ship Imperial builds. I feel your list is too specialized. however the decimater is a tough ship.

I'd be interested in knowing in what way you feel this squadron is too specialized. Any input you could give me would be helpful.

I fail to see how LW can be good on Carnor, what's ur plan? don't get me wrong, I love Lone Wolf, my fav EPT of W5, but this does not feel like the best use of it.

I'm iffy on naked Oicunn. My experience, so far, has been that he needs some sort of direct support to get best use out of his ability. I'd drop him to Patrol Leader, and use the other two points for additional upgrades.

Other than that, looks cool!

My thinking on Carnor getting Lone Wolf is this: Carnor is meant to be the Super Dash hunter. He takes an evade token each turn to help with survivability. Lone Wolf gives him the chance to re-roll blanks on both offense and defense. If he stays in range one of Super Dash, he has the upper hand. If not, the evade plus defensive re-rolls helps keep him alive.

First test of this squad, I used Patrol Leader with the Dauntless title. In two games, I got the extra action about four times. I would have loved to have the extra damage there. I'm not opposed to further experimenting, though!

You already have the ultimate Dash hunter: Soontir ;)

True, but my thinking is that Soontir will do one of three things here. One, he's the immediate target of the enemy force, because everybody knows how tough he is. Two, he gets left alone to clean up inferior support ships. Three, if Carnor can't finish Dash on his own, Soontir can shift priority to help. I think it gives a good amount of balance to the list.

go wih it and let us know how it goes !

I can tell you that my early testing I tabled a Super Dash and loaded out Jan Ors list. It was really close (the Decimator was down to its last three hull). The player I was up against I consider to be the better player, so I was thoroughly impressed with the performance. I'll keep tinkering and report back!

I'm curious as to whether Isard or Dauntless is better - I put both on, and ended up never using Dauntless because Isard was giving me sweet, sweet evades.

If you're not using one because you're always using the other, then shouldn't you already know the answer to your question?

I have a Decimator I like more...any one that I have blown to smithereens with focus fire will do nicely. :P

So a snooty RAdm is a very good counter to other decimators due to his crit ability and is also good against autothruster-less interceptors.

RAdm + expose + experimental interface at a minimum, probably also Ysanne if you can spare 4 pts with the rest of the list. Rebel captive as well if you can spare another 3.

The rest of the list can be basically anything. That RAdm build dominates all three of the ships in your build. Probably not all at the same time, there's only so much one shop can do, but even adding APs to round out the points should win vs your list.

And it's also a decimator build I enjoy playing.

I always run predator, vader, or gunner with my decimators, they cost too much not to buff thier offense.

I've only run kenkirk, first few times with Vet Instincts, Engine Upgrade, gunner, and ysanne. I was ok with thag build, but it was a two ship list (with whisper) and i got hit with a few nasty crits though that made me wanna try to protect the investment more. Id like to add vader to that build but its not happening in the two ship list.

The other build I ran was predator, engine upgrade, ysanne, moffy J and Intel agent. The second one is much tankeir and protects from a few of the nasty crits that hurt decimators.

Edit: My buddy put a rebel captive on his, that alone will wreck a phantom. You can just patrol officer with rebel captive and make the phatom cry.

I've found a decked out Baron or Whisper work wonders with that Chiraneau build.

Isard and ptl or ei.

I'm thinking about trying this list out tonight.

I am becoming fond of this list for placing crits.

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (63)
Veteran Instincts, Gunner, Ysanne Isard, Rebel Captive, Engine Upgrade
Soontir Fel (36)
Royal Guard TIE, Marksmanship, Experimental Interface, Stealth Device

My mate mark played a 'ramship' decimator against me the other day while i played a HLC dash as my main ship.

I thought i'd done nicely dodging a ram as his ship narrowly misssed me.

Until he used expert handling to barrel roll on top of me.

It was only *after the game* that i remembered you cant do a barrel roll if it cant be completed without impact

But hey ho it was a funny way to lose a ship anyway.

You are spending 6 points on Soontir just to flip a crit if you happen to roll a focus. Seems like a huge waste. Just stick with PTL, no need to get fancy.

Chiraneau is awesome with predator. It essentially gives him a mini-TL and mini-focus (at range 1-2) every single time he shoots. I guess the VI is nice against Phantoms, but doesn't help you much against anything else.

I'm finding that Isard is almost an auto-include for me running Decimators. That extra evade action can keep with alive at least another turn in most cases. It also combos nicely with EI or PTL and EU to allow for a boost after everyone is already moved. Its hard not to throw her on a build.

... while i played a HLC dash as my main ship.

Now that's a redundant statement. No one will play Dash....or any YT-2400 without the Outrider and HLC option.

I am currently running Echo and Kenkirk it is working out well.

Echo with VI, FCS, and ACK

Kenkirk with Expose, Isard, Jade, Gunner, and EI.

I have won about 6 in a row at our local store. I have had a few semi close calls due to poor playing on my part but for just two ships it works well. I killed a Han mini swarm build with ease, I took out another decimator list similar to the OP's list here and various other 3 to 5 rebel ship builds with it.

Against the Han list my first to shots were one shots on two Z95s. After that it is easy breezy. The hardest challenge was against the other Decimator list, but I forgot to use Jade for several turns and that made it closer than it would have been. I also got some terrific defense rolls on my Phantom the one time I misplayed and left it exposed. Having initiative in all but one game helped me a ton too.

I have tried a double decimator, and used decimator/firespray as well. I have used Decimator with mini swarm but it was just boring to play so I am trying to build outside the mini swarm box. I don't know how competitive this build will be in a tourney setting but I will find out this Thursday night as I play in my first tourney ever. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Sounds good, but why didnt Han kill Echo in about 2 turns? Sounds weird.

Also, have you tried rebel captive instead of Mara?
