Star Wars costumes the orignal trilogy.

By Black Knight Leader, in X-Wing

I just got this book, you can get it 20% off at B&N. It has a pretty good entry, historical information, on the creation of most suits seen in the orignal 3 movies and some you may have missed. I give it a 8-10. Its very detailed but they didnt post every concept picture for every costume in this book. The ones they do put in the book are nice.

Just some interesting bits of info from the book.

* TIE Fighter Pilots were labled "Vaders wing men" by the costume department.

** Some of the concept art for TIE Fighter Pilots has them looking like the 181st post ROTJ.

** New scenes were shot for ROTJ with TIE Fighter Pilots.

** Hero Pilots had "Silver Tiger Stripes" put on there helmets as well as other markings that were put there by the Pilot most likely.

** Each life suport chest box is unique.

** Two TIE Fighter Pilot suits were altered to become AT-AT drivers. HOWEVER one of the suits was turned back into a TIE Fighter Pilot suit. They left the lit back panel, with some detail changes and the left the shoulder armour. This suit was used and filmed in ROTJ (hanger scene) and ESB (Cloud City Droid garbage destroyer scene)

*** This means there are THREE diffrent types of Imperial Fighter Pilot suits seen in the Orignal Trilogy.

1) Triple hose

2) Double hose

3) Armored

**** This Armored TIE Pilot suit could be one of these things listed.

1) TIE Interceptor Pilot

2) TIE Avenger Pilot

3) TIE Defender Pilot

4) TIE Bomber Pilot / TIE Heavy Advanced Bomber Pilot / TIE Boarding Craft Pilot / TIE Shuttle Pilot / TIE Interdictor Pilot

5) Gunboat Pilot / Missileboat Pilot

6) Gunship / Dropcraft Pilot

7) Elite Pilot from a elite Squadron / Wing / Group, that is allowed to use custom flight gear and customized craft like Scyth Squadron.

* Scout Trooper Armour was the most advanced Imperial trooper armour made in the films.

** It was built with a faceplate that can be pulled up over the helmet like a motorcycle visor. This was done so the stunt men didnt remove there helmets like they would when dressed as Storm Troopers. It was costing GL money having the stunt men waiting till the last sec to put there Storm Trooper helmets back on.

** The inside of the helmet was designed to not wobble like reg Storm Troopers helmets did.

* When Rob Anderson would do sword fights as Darth Vader, he used a helmet with lower parts that were simi-transparent.

* Concept art for Reb Pilots with rebreather masks made them look sim too TIE Pilots

** Prototype rebreather masks were made for Rebs but not used for filming because the actors couldnt be seen and action couldnt be potrayed well.

* ROTJ Y-Wing Flight suits had a easter egg written on there suits "Help held Captive by ILM."

** There is a fake bit on the back of the helmet that was made to be a hard lock that breaks the helmet apart if the Pilot is in medical distress.

** One helmet was built with a light that could give the apperance of a glowing headd up targeting display in the visor.

** One helmet has a logo from a famous american news broodcaster on the chin guard.

Several of the ship types you mentioned weren't imagened until much later. The TIE Defender a.o. was made for the game TIE Fighter in the 90ties. It seems inaccurate if a book about the OT claims that a pilot outfit was made for this ship.

Also, link or it didn't happen.

Yeah, either a link or some photos.

I didnt say it was built for those fighters "out of universe" but since they have shown a trend for diffrent types of pilots having diffrent types of flight gear, I presented craft this armour may be used in that would be flown at the time of ROTJ.

Its not possible to post links, but you can trust me, its because my only link to the web is a 360.. If this is in reguards to the Elite looking Armored TIE Pilot flight suit you can watch for it in the scenes I mentioned. I have seen it in in ESB right at the beginning of the scene wbefore you see C-3PO ibn a box heading towards a disintegrator.

I guess you could always just buy the book or look at it at B&N

Nah, Bossok would have kept the skin. It was the Predator. Chewbacca was strong enough that Predator wanted to take the skeleton instead.

Oh man.

I really want to see all this stuff now. However, about the rebreather helmet...

I loved this hat, I wore it constantly along with orange and white padded armor, truly ace looking.

I dont know where you got this but it looks better than the diffrent versions they drew and put in this book.

Kinda reminds me of a Rebel Marine.

I see you, and raise you Commander Cody's helmet!

It's from Star Wars Galaxies. You got it for becoming an ace pilot.

One of the two rebel items I always wanted and never got. Entirely because of my internet.

FOR OVER TEN YEARS MY INTERNET HAS C*CK BLOCKED ME.

I'd still like to see the bone white TIE Helmet with the SS Jacket...

To me the TIE varients of fighter pilot kit are just older/newer issue stuff.

I dont think they put as much thought into it as we do.

ANH was made on a real budget, they just made stuff that looked cool, some of ROTJ had suits remade and also unsued footage from ANH used., hence the mix of two and three hose tie suits.

I do tie pilot cosplay, i do two hose because it looks bloody stupid having a third hose waving around behind you that clearly would plug into the craft.

In my 'game universe' im an interceptor pilot. TIE ln, TIE int, TIE bomber all require a full suit as they have no life support.

Later EU stuff like the missile and gun boats and phantoms have life support.

Oddly tie advanced doesnt either.

When i was a soldier we wore kit issued to us but there were guys in the unit who had been there since the 80s so they have 68 pattern kit, some guys had 85 pattern kit, i got issued 90 pattern combat fatigues but we were all in the same rifle company. Equally some guys hung onto older webbing they were more used to even when we were all issued a new type.

If star wars militaries are anything like real ones then there is no 'strangeness' that two guys in the same squadron have different patterns of flight suit, harness or even helmet.

Like imagine if a guy had fought the early rebellion wars and survived the death star batttle in ANH era wearing his 'old' issue kit he'd probably be quite attached to it and not want to change to a new system he didnt have confidence in.

Real soldiers are inherently suspicious of new kit until its been tested and proven in the field. When we recieved the SA80 all the old sweats hated it and bemoaned the removal of their old 7.62 SLR rilfe, the sa80 had some teething problems but its currently the best assault rifle in NATO (or debateablyin the top three at least) after having its teething troubles fixed withing about eight years by the heckler and koch(consider it took *decades* to make the m16 a 'passable' assault rifle)

But even though the sa80a2 is an outstanding rifle, very old soldiers would still rather have the kit they trained on. Anything new is always treated with suspicion tbh.

So i dont think the different types of tie suit, chest box or helmet mean *anything*, i just think its what that pilot was issued with in that sector when they passed out of their sector academy.

When it breaks (if they survive) they get a new piece or whole suit, so you might get a guy with a pre yavin chest box and a post endor helmet.

No. I never really liked that helmet, though I understood that one's rarity (and I could have gotten it, I played six months after it came out).

I can see that being true with ground forces, but the people flying in the USN as well as other North American branches, have strick rules concerning the flight gears used by drivers and crew esp this last 10-15 years, esp if your flying in real dangerous areas, over really really cold water. This type of gear links with the craft esp the more mondern helmet target linking equipment.

Well this is atleast true when you got the time and money to do this sort of thing.

What TIE Pilots got it even more conected to the craft in terms of control and information process and delevery between the crew and craft than what we got now. I imagine when the craft are upgrade, updated, they need new softwear and hardwear.

You said you are in the 501st right? Why do I never see the ACE / ARMORED type of TIE PILOT gear used? After seeing it I would much rather use it if I ever dreesed as a TIE Pilot than the other two types seen in the movies.

I know Gunboats Missileboats and TIE Phantoms have life support, as do TIE Bombers, but as standard IM sure they wear there gear anyway, it shows it being the case with TIE Bombers. I always wore gear even when I technically didnt need too. I just felt better with it on.
