Which sealed pack tournament would you prefer (Wave 6 release).

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

Just coming up with some ideas for Wave 6 launch events. The traditional make a new squad out of one of the new ships will not work because the new ships will be a separate faction. So I thought of something similar to well it isn't a draft but a sealed pack built around the Most Wanted pack. So far I have came up with two different ideas for a tournament. It will require a purchase of the Most Wanted pack which will be added in the entry fee. This is what I have though of.

Option 1:

All participants will have a most wanted pack, with the pack they will have
  • Two Z-95 Headhunter models
  • One Y-wing model.

Participants may bring

  • One Y-wing model
  • One HWK 290- model
  • One Firespray-41 model
  • any upgrade cards they want to equip their squadron with.

All participants must bring all dice and templates required to play a standard match of X-wing in a competitive tournament setting.

Participants will be required to make a standard Scum and Villainy Squadron of up to 100 points using only

the models listed below:

  • Up to two Z-95 Headhunters
  • Up to two Y-wings
  • Up to one HWK-290
  • UP to one Firespray 41 modle.
  • Any legal upgrade cards from the Star Wars X-wing miniatures game collection from core to wave 6.

Standard competitive tournament rules apply.

Pros: Probably the easiest to set up and also the one where participants are on the most equal footing. It won't be to dependent on individual collections although upgrades might give advantages to some. Can substitute a voucher or pre-sale of the most wanted pack as an admission to the tournament. This also allows the other Wave 6 ships to be saved as prizes.

Cons: This will also have the least amount of selection available for squadrons so less tournament list diversity and no experience with the new models.

Option 2:

All participants get a Most Wanted Pack and can choose two expansion packs from following list depending upon availability one at a time. (*counts as 2 packs)

  • Y-wing expansion pack
  • HWK-290 expansion pack
  • Star Viper expansion pack
  • MA-3 Scyk expansion pack
  • IG-2000 expansion pack*
  • Slave-1 expansion pack*

All participants will be required to make a standard Scum and Villainy squadron of no more than 100 points using only the models, tiles, dials and cards they received in the Most Wanted and their expansion packs drafts.

All participants must bring their own templates dice and tokens required to play a standard game of X-wing miniatures.

Standard competitive rule format applies.

Pros: A more accurate definition of the "sealed pack" style tournament. Makes the new ships available in the tournament.

Cons: Requires a more expensive entry fee to compensate for the additional models. Wave 6 ships as prizes will be redundant.

So which one would you rather play in. Is there a better option, maybe a combination of the two or would you just rather play a standard format and let Wave 6 ships be legal?

I'd figured since the new faction will be the latest and greatest why not just have a S&V tournament?

Thoughts, opinions, comments?

Increase the entry fee accordingly and offer first and second place finishers the pack. That's the only real way to do it I think. Requiring every person there to purchase something woukd be more of a deterrent than requiring enough pooled money to award first and second place finishers. And maybe, to keep it scaled appropriately, the first place winner would just get the new ships, where the second place guy gets the new ships and a boot to the stones.

You could do an Imdaar Alpha Style tournament, people use their own Rebel/Imperial lists for the opening rounds and then have the top 2 play with the new wave, One person gets Most Wanted and can use the conversion for their own HWK/Firespray, the other gets the other 3 packs, (or maybe let the person not using most wanted get access to the hwk stuff from most wanted, for 2 Z-95s, 2 Y-Wings, and Firespray vs HWK, Starviper, IG-88 and Scyk), and then let the top 4 get prizes

It would probably end up needing 11 people at a 10$ entry fee (to break even with retail cost) but depending on your area I don't know if that would be reasonable to fill or a challenge

Well the purchase was for a most wanted pack which is something that most people who are interested in the new S&V faction are already going to buy. So I'd figured why not just attach a tournament with it. The entry fee includes the MW pack that would have been bought, also a pre-sale or voucher for the MW pack can also count as an entry ticket.

That sounds feasible but I don't want to split packs in fear of one of the participants loosing something. Still a MW pack with all the converted parts will have a big advantage over the other 3 ships. I would have to do a IG-2000 + 3 of the Star Vipers/MA-3 Interceptors. But then that would be allot of packs over the one pack.

For Imadar Alpha both finalists will have to get a MW pack and then they can choose from either the 2 small ships or the Agressor. Still my one gripe with the Imadar Alpha tournament set up is in the last tournament both finalists had the ships they wanted so they both decided to agree to a tie (boo-hiss) so we didn't get to see the Wave 4 ships play until the next month.

I like the first option, and even though it basically puts as little as six ship choices in front of your players it will still give them enough room to experiment with ships they are familiar with in a new context. Heck, since Most Wanted is basically a big expansion pack you can have a swap meet for stuff afterwords, including the other wave six ships and cards.

Okay so I got one for a standard tournament with the finalists being a wave 6 sealed pack and one for option one.

If there is a limited pre release like Imadar Alpha with wave 4 then well that Imadar Alpha style will likely be the format. However if it is a general release with pre-releases only at special events then the option 1 or 2 will be a possible format.

Any others?

I just want to say that when I read, "Sealed pack tournament", I immediately imagined X-Wing players using the ships still in their packages, trying to fly them around that way.

Yeah that would be difficult, but I mean it is more like well a draft or something by the terms everyone start with well more or less the same foot, instead of bringing their own squadron from their collection they will be making a brand new squadron out of the new ships.
