Imperial Epic Ship - possible spoiler?

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

I had a very enjoyable time, leaning back in a lazy boy, and reading this thread ...

It seems that as far as X-Wingers are concerned, the most POWERFUL, THREATENING, "THOSE ARE FIGHTING WORDS" words that can be used in this forum are:

Star Destroyer, Wedge-Shaped, etc.

:

I like wedge-shaped x-wings. Especially with predator.

I like it. Want a Star Destroyer, even if it is only a Light Star Destroyer.

I fully expect the Imperial wedge-shaped Huge ship to cost around $120 and be worth 4-5 Epic points in the tournament format.

That has been suggested before. The problem is that in the team epic format, each player has 3 epic points to spend on huge ships. If they make a 4 point ship, it won't be able to be included in that format, and FFG is unlikely to make a huge ship that can't be played in one of their epic formats.

I am not trying to be negative, but Epic is dead, especially when Armada comes out. Epic may live on in side games by "lifers" who have purchased every ship around. However, even now nobody really plays an epic game.

I love to play epic games but there are few people who play it.

The S&V podcast designers interview disagrees.

If a classic wedge shaped Imperial Huge came out that had the same quality and painting of Fantasy Flights miniatures so far I'd get one just for looks even if was over $100 and I never played it. P.S. I'd love to play it.

Interesting. I forgot about Team Epic. That does pose a problem...

I hope to be wrong, you people pst good points, also an epic game against Scum would add diversity. But, sorry I do not see it happening as economics of sales take over.

Okay, so what economic evidence are you pointing to? From what I see Huge ships are a sales success. Do you know differently?

To me, Epic play is the heart of the game. It's game I wanted Before Huge ships were announced. Having bombers just makes a lot more sense if there is a Huge ship to go up against. Having fast interceptors makes a lot more sense if they're running flat out to take on bombers bent on destroying their capship. Fighter escorts for bombers become mandatory in an environment where interceptors are going after said bombers.

Also: when a Torpedo is 4 points of 300, and can be fired at a target that cannot evade, it's a lot more useful and less punishing to equip.

By contrast, the 100 point dogfight is a fun little exercise. :)

Now, I was about to get back on and say how these thoughts of yours, Forgottenlore, have ruined my hopes for the Imperial Huge ship. No offense to you - you speak wisdom. However, there are a couple of things to consider. First, they have made fundamental changes to some of the rules, like the barrel roll for Large ships. They even completely redid the tournament scoring rules, so it's possible that they will revisit the Team Epic tournament rules. After all, it makes sense to prevent each Rebel player to have a CR-90 and a GR-75 - that's 4 Huge ships on the table! But when the Imperial Huge ship lands, it may even the playing field, such that 4 Huge ships on the Rebels does not break the game. Perhaps.

The other thought I've been having, now this is highly unlikely, but what if it's taking them so long to announce Imperial Epic ships because the gigantic Star Destroyer-esque ship has an even larger base with different maneuvers entirely? I hope that's not the case, but I can't deny that it's a possibility.

I used to think epic games were too big, I mean why play one long game when you can fit in a few shorter more fun ones right? but then i played a few 300pt games and dammit its good. Its like screw making a list of a few ships I'm gona use all my ships!

I don't think Armada will kill epic games more just kinda compliment them as you kinda zoom out on the combat zone x-wing => Epic x-wing => Armada => Epic Armada.

Armada and Epic X-Wing are such vastly different things, I can't really see how they can be fairly compared. The scale of X-Wing is, roughly, "fights a single X-Wing can be meaningful in". In Armada, the scale is roughly "small fleet engagements".

In X-Wing, there might be as few as 10 people involved. In Armada, the smallest ship has a crew of roughly 150. It's just such a different concept that they only really meet at the "plastic ships go pew" level. Different itches will be scratched. :)

Mikael: you raise a good point, however, epic may remain for small ships. Personally, I have NO need for an Imperial Epic ship...let me swarm my ties, load my bombers an add a few interceptors and I am a happy Imperial. For me the Decimator works ok, but an epic ship, no thanks.

Okay, but that's a function of your opinion. Also, sure, you can be just as effective, if not more so, with large/small ships than with Huge ships. But I really like flying huge ships. I think they're tremendous fun, but I'm also a dyed-in-the-wool Imperial player.

I'm looking forward to Armada, but I still want a big-honking Imperial model on the board, and I want to annihilate Y-Wings with my turbolasers.

So maybe my analysis is just as much wishful thinking as yours, but I have a LOT of people in my area who have Huge ships, but have had limited occasion to fly them. They've also been reprinted by FFG. As such, they are a commercial success, so there's no reason why Epic should be declared at this stage.

Definitely. Epic hasn't had a chance yet. Unfortunately, I already know several people at my local store that won't even give the Imperial Epics a chance due to how Rebel-only-Epic has soured their opinion over it. It's a bit sad, really. When (If?) they release the new ships, FFG is going to have a long and hard road ahead of them rebuilding the reputation of Epic. Not just that the games last incredibly long, or because it's one-sided now, but also because the Epic ships themselves, the focal point of the new game mode, are vastly underpowered at the moment.

I have to agree that FFG was to nice with the Epic rules. Dammit when I buy a $100 model I expect it to kill at least 1/4 of the small ships it is facing before they sting it to death in their multiple waves. It should be a cool-ass space fort, not a big stupid dope of a target that can't even move efficiently and defend it's self competently.

Des Hugeies suckies...

Epic hasn't even STARTED yet.

Imagine if X-Wing core sets only contained X-Wings, and teh TIE fighters had been delayed. Thus, nobody had actually played a real game yet. declaring it dead would be grossly premature. Epic ships have only come out for one side, so nobody has played a TRUE epic game yet. The closest thing to it would be mirror matches or Imperial players "borrowing" the Tantive. Still you haven't gotten the feel or the balance of Rebel vs Imperial. And no, 300 point lists of small ships don't count.

Yeah it is a baby yet. And no... ARMADA does NOT cover what the X-WING EPIC GAME can and will be... NOooo!

:D
