Is there any way a Outrider build can beat a Phantom+mini-Swarm build?

By gundamv, in X-Wing

Outrider: Dash + HLC + Outrider (at a minimum, other upgrade cards are variable)

Phantom: Whisper + VI + ACD (at a minimum, other upgrade cards are variable)

Is there any way the Outrider, in conjunction with other figures, beat the Phantom + a mini-Swarm? How? I find the range 1 donut hole most aggravating.

PS bid and vet instincts? Get Airen for mid combat boosting.

Luke or Corran with VI and R3-A2 will go a long ways.

Phantomhunting as Rebel is much easier imo

Red Dice > Green Dice when at equal numbers.
This includes if both have equal modifiers.

Whisper would need to use Evade actions to break the parity.

You'd need to do as much as possible to keep Whisper out of the doughnut for this to matter, though. This means filling the hole with as many friendly ships (or firing arcs) as possible.

Meanwhile, Whisper's shooting at your 2 agility dice with 4 offensive dice, probably with a FCS target-lock.... yeah it ain't looking good for the Dashster.

Also, consider that Dash + VI + Outrider + HLC is a full 10 points more expensive than Whisper + VI + FCS + Adv Cloak and still has substantial problems with the match-up....

One trick I use to combat phantoms is to have my two rookie X-wings chase my Outrider at about range one intentionally aimed at my own back end and not trying to get targets aggresively. That way if the phantom wants to get close to the outrider it must present at least some target to the X's, And if it wants to go for the X's it will wind up under the fire umbrella of Dash. Also some times you can dive in toward the phantom so that it either bumps, sparing you it's shots, or decloaks to far past you but facing away. Or set yourself up outside range five to the phantom over and over again. Dare it to get close enough to trade blows for a turn then fly to a different corner and try to set the trap anew. Combining all these tactics might open some new paths for you to explore. My Dash Standard(common build):

>Dash Rendar

>>Outrider

>>Heavy Laser Cannon

>>Kyle Katarn

>>Push the Limit

>>Engine Upgrade

>Rookie Pilot

>Rookie Pilot

There are plenty of other viable ways to build 2400 lists too so browse around and you should find some good ones.

My advice would be not to use HLC + Outrider, it may sound nice on paper but it just leaves your weakness of R1 open for exploitation. Consider either taking an Ion Cannon or Autoblaster + Outrider then you won't have such a weakness. Indeed the autoblaster will shred a Phantom, and with large ship barrel roll actions it'll require some skilled flying on the part of the phantom to stay out of range for long, especially if you're ignoring obstacles and barreling straight at them.

Alternatively consider out-tanking them:

Chewbacca
Predator, C-3PO, Lando Calrissian, Millenium Falcon, Experimental Interface
"Leebo"
Determination, Ion Cannon, Dash Rendar, Outrider

Chewie ignores crits, Leebo allows you to draw two crits and choose which one you suffer, so pick Pilot ones to then discard via Determination. Leebo locks targets down with the Ion Cannon and doesn't have to worry about obstacles cause of Dash, meanwhile Chewie flies a safer line and takes an Evade action, followed by Experimental Interface granting a free use of Lando onto which you tack on C3P0 to guarantee at least one Evade, and can use any Focus on your attacks. Overall you have 13hull/10shield and both ships are PS5 so you'll get to shoot before swarms.

R3-A2 kills Phantoms, you don't even have to hit.

If you find that hole so aggravating, why take it?

Give Dash VI, and always take the fastest moves you can in the situation, IE 4 straight, 3 turn+ boost, etc. But NEVER bump or lose your actions, or you'll take 5 hits and not return fire.

It is simple really, if you find that whisper bumrush the range 1, get a companion that can put damage on it close to the outrider, like a vi fcs r2d2 , if you can punish him for trying to get into the donut you should be fine.

This is not only made for Phantom hunting actually. But you could drop Intel agent and switch predator for Lone Wolf on Han. That makes two ships on PS 9 and i made the experience that nearly no one goes for a 2 point initiative bid with their Whisper. On top of that Dash does not have Outrider, but actually Whisper will rather go after Han while Dash can inflict danage. The list does not suffer from Donut hole and i actually like that. Dash plus Leebo is very maneuvrable and i get 3 dice or 4 HLC dice really often with him. 3 dice is actually not harmless for a Phantom especially if it has no initiative. Even 2 are dangerous for it because it wont be cloaked if it wants to fire.

autoblaster would mean you only can fire at range 1. Might as well hand over the match right then and there.

Agreed. If you think it's annoying that a phantom can easily get in R1, think about how much easier it is to stay OUT of R1.

If you've never played against it... You're in for a tough time.

But it, like the phantom, has hard counters. Higher ps with decloak or boost+br can get inside the donut.

Having a hard counter doesn't mean the phantom is bad, and the same can be said about dash.

Take something with ps10 and r3a2, like vi corran to solve the phantom problem.

Just make a 2-ship with Dash and Corran. You can build Corran mobile enough to get shots on Whisper and even Echo if you have more initiative than them. And i have Blown Whisper up like that too

But what would be the Corran build that counters Phantoms best, but is not useless afterwards? I don't know if i have it optimal here. I would like Advanced Sensors on Corran, but i think he might get shots like this on a phantom, but i am not sure about it. If he gets shots, FCS means he can probably killthe phantom in one turn with his ability. It might be necessary to swap out R2-D2 for R3-A2 to prevent a recloak too!

I always fly my Dash with Mr.Horn at PS10. If the Phantom becomes to focus on Dash, Horn will make him pay a deadly price. I've faced Phantoms many times and find it to be lack luster against an Outrider. Remember Rocks anyone friends as the dash player and a nightmare for a chasing Phantom.
