Hutts politics

By Tymophil, in Game Masters

Hi all,

I run a campaign where my PCs are on the run from Teemo the Hutt. I started with the adventure included in the Starter Kit, and then added lots of homemade adventures.

As I wanted to change the mood, I added the adventure included with GM screen "Debts to Pay". The hook was to have another hutt, Bargos, with prestige trying to calm down Teemo.

Is such a thing plausible? Could the prestige of an old Hutt be enough to calm down another, younger, more ambitious Hutt?

Could Teemo kill the old hutt for interfering?

Bargos could have enough prestige, political clout, or sheer money to calm down Teemo. Teemo might want the PCs, but does he want them more than he wants to maintain good relations with Bargos? Maybe he stops moving overtly against the PCs, but tries to arrange 'accidents' for them.

Sure, Teemo could try to assassinate Bargos. Does he have the political strength to survive such a move?

We think of Hutts in an organized crime sense, but they aren't like any modern syndicates. They're more like feuding Byzantine nobility who owe their wealth to drugs, slavery, racketeering, bribery, and the black market. The strength of a Hutt isn't found in his personal armed guard, but his wealth, political connections, blackmailed pawns, and economic influence. Hutts use bounty hunters, because they throw money at serious problems.

Hope that helped.

Could Teemo kill the old hutt for interfering?

I guess we'll find out when the Hutt sourcebook comes out soon :)

I'd say, sure, Teemo could try, but Bargos could respond in kind. But I'd also suggest that Hutts are more loyal to each other than some short-lived lesser species. Bargos might see what he could do. If Teemo really wants the PCs, Bargos might be sympathetic. Unless they saw a critical gain for themselves in going to war against each other, they'd probably be more interested in doing away with the meddlers who are trying to play them off against each other. Depends how far the PCs want to push it.

So, obviously Legends/EU is out the window, BUT, if you want a nice look at Hutt Politics, and how they solve their problems as described in the EU, you should check out A.C. Crispin's Han Solo trilogy. If you're willing to take on some fan content, I wrote a Star Wars fan comic at Fandom Comics that shows some Hutts working out their differences as Hutts do. Check out Tales of the Chu'Unthor:

The hutt stuff starts on page 6 or so.

And naturally, Sterling Hershey is covering the Hutt Kadijics in the new Hutt Space book as revealed by a recent article. I'm sure you'll get plenty of information there.

I think it is plausible. It could help, too, if Teemo has something that Bargos wants, and so the interference is part of an effort to obtain the thing in question, especially if the PCs could be a part of that.

I'll second KRKappel's recommendation of A.C. Crispin's trilogy; it has lots of good information about inter-kajidic feuds.

I wanted to play Bargos as an old glory on the decline, still full of prestige for his achievements in the post... It's the picture I got from his depiction in the “Debts to Pay” scenario...

Is there any kind of respect in the Hutt society for such “glories of the past”? Would the elimination of Bargos be looked upon as something shameful amongst Hutts?

I want to show how reckless and vicious Teemo is, by having him blowing up the palace of Bargos . To inspire fear in the heart of the players. I would like them to try to confront him rather than fleeing, as they are getting quite tough now.

Does it seem plausible for Star Wars “scholars”?

If Teemo is reckless, vicious, and stupid, anything is possible.

In a mafia-like criminal organization, respect is to be expected, but so is back-stabbing. I'd say Bargos, retired don living on the reputation of more glorious days, deciding to side against Teemo and winding up on Teemos hit list are very plausible and interesting plot hooks.

Congrats for making Hutts interesting!

In my campaign Teemo is engaged in lots of semi-criminal activities:

  • a new Vratix narcotic to be spread in the galaxy, for the terrorists of the Ashern, who seek revenge for the robbing of the Bacta license, by wrecking havoc in the galaxy. The drug is made on the Polis Massa hospital, by the Chemist in charge of the pharmacy, a Vratix.
  • Cloning of monstrous baby Wookies for their fur with a Kaminoan scientist and Trandoshan minions on Trandosha. They already blew the “farm”...
  • Stealing mines on Ryloth (as in the “Long Arm of the Hutt” scenario).

In most of those activities, Teemo works alongside a powerful MOFF: the one in charge of the Kashyyyk system. He's called Hindane Darcc. His involvement makes things much easier to sale stuff on the legal market...

It may not be that stupid for Teemo to show his resolve to such an ally...

In fact, I want my PCs to meet one of the very few imperial officers who firmly believe that Palpatine brought peace to the Galaxy and want the Empire to be cleansed of corruption. So, they will fight Hindane Darcc with the help of an imperial “Elliot Ness”... But first, they must get rid of the pesky Teemo and his bounty hunters.

Don't forget, it can be anything you want it to be at your table. You don't have to abide 100% by anyone else's idea of canon, even the filmmakers or novelists or anyone else's who's written about it.

What you're suggesting sounds plausible to me and if you can make it into a fun experience for your players, that's what matters most!

My problem is that I don't know as much on the Star Wars universe as some of my players. I don't want to break the suspension of disbelief with an obvious blunder...

Hutts are long lived, he'll have his revenge in due time when it can be served cold and he's had time to plan. They're a lot of things but rarely impetuous, the other thing is that he'll keep those cards very close to his chest.

Say nothing

Do nothing

Reveal nothing

When the PC's anxiety finally wears off, then it can get ugly in a heartbeat.
