Epic Manuvering

By Punning Pundit, in X-Wing

I am, like all right thinking people, eagerly awaiting the Imperial Epic ships to be announced, spoiled, awaited, and in my greedy little hands. And I've got some thoughts. Specifically, about dials.

As you probably know, the key differences between the Huge Ships and the Non-Huge-Ships are a) the Energy mechanic and b) the maneuver template. These two things are tied together: each maneuver on the dial gives a specific amount of energy to be allocated and spent. With the maneuver template that has been created for the 2 current Huge ships, there are a grand total of 8 movements that are possible for a huge ship- any huge ship- to have on it's dial. The only real differences are going to be in the exact amount of energy that any given Huge ship will have on it's dial. That seems a bit... boring. So what are the options?

1) Stick with the current dial/template setup. It works fairly well, and the differences in maneuver between various Huge ships should be a lot smaller than the differences in maneuver between the other ships.

2a) Change the template/create a new template. The current template uses a notch (45 degrees, I think. I'm going to say 45 degrees even if that's not correct. It's the idea that matters, not the actual number) that gets fitted into the side of the front base, that regulates turning. So if a new ship launches with a new template, changing the angle of the notch would change how maneuverable the ship is. Same dial, same energy allotment, but very different maneuvering options. I actually don't like this idea all that much, as templates ought to be as inter-operable as possible. I honestly wish they'd figured out a way to keep the fighter/freighter templates for the Huge ships, but I understand why they didn't. Adding a 3rd template seems like it's asking for trouble.

2b) Related to the above, but I like it a lot more. Change the angle of the _base_. The maneuver results from an interchange of the notch and the base. If the base isn't at a 90 degree angle, you'll have a different maneuver even if the template is the same. The problem here is that the resulting bases are no longer the same as the bases on any other Huge ship. I think it's possible to create some sort of plastic/cardboard retrofitting, but I don't even want to comment about how expensive that might be.

3) I dunno man. What do you think?

I would think 1. Armada scale may show these huge ships having different maneuvers available but then the small ships have 360 degrees of freedom. Using these huge ships in X Wing however needs to keep things focussed more on energy and actions rather than complex maneuvering.

But it will probably take 6 months before we see spoilers for the Empire even getting a suitable ship.

So I just need to get this up and ready until then!

Yeah I love EPIC as do most of the veterans, but it is not the game for fancy moves.

Think of the Huge ships are mobile forts. The real trick is how you fly the rest of the ships around the Huge ships.

:)

I think you're correct about the Huge ships not needing fancy moves. I just want them to have _different_ moves. I want more variation in the dials than I think we'll be able to get.
