Design Buzz Droids

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

So even though Buzz Droids are only seen in the Clone Wars era, the Zahn Consortium (Scum) used them in Empire At War .

In the movie we see them pop out of missiles (somehow.) In the video game they just kind of sit like a cloud and effect anyone who flies through them.

How would you design Buzz Droids?

I think they would make a good Bomb. Use the Proximity Mine template for size. Fly through the template, remove the template and assign a buzz droid token to your ship.

As far as their effect goes that's another story.

I might be thematic if they turned facedown cards faceup. Or just dealt damage.

Maybe start of combat phase, roll 1 attack die. On a hit take a damage card. On a crit, flip one of your facedown cards faceup.

Or maybe just only flipping cards faceup, as they seem to just disable vital systems rather than doing major damage to ships. They don't do new damage to your ship (unless they flip a direct hit) but they mess with it a lot.

There should also be some way of using an action to try and remove them, though it shouldn't be easy.

Also would be fun if they spread to other ships if you bumped them.

There's lots of crazy possibilities for buzz droids in this game. How would you make them work?

Dropped like a Proximity Mine. Get a Buzzdroid token. Every End Phase, roll 1 attack die. On a hit, draw one facedown card, on a crit, draw one faceup card, on an eye, discard the token.

I would consider making them not use the proximity size bomb for a smaller bomb template but make buzz droids more potent.

If they go over it the ship gets a buzz droid token.

Roll a die at the start of every combat phase on a crit, the ship suffers one damage. On a hit result, suffer one strain.

Shake 'em off! If the afflicted ship does a green maneuver don't roll any dice. If they do a white roll 1, red roll 2. If an evade is rolled, remove the buzz droid token.

Basically a bomb that forces the enemy to not do the maneuver they want, and to strain themselves for a greater chance to remove the buzz droid.

Proximity mines that use the missile/torpedoes slot and the template is put in front of the ship.

Instead of just dealing damage with the three dice, deal a face up damage card for crits, do nothing on hits, assign a stress token for each focus result.

Buzzdroids make zero sense. I can at least understand the fantastical usefulness of a lightsaber or plasma based energy weapons, but Buzzdroids? This isn't meant as a comment against your idea. These things do exist in the prequels after all, so they are "canon." Unfortunately, they're just another symptom of the bloated imagination that dominated this century's addition to the Star Wars dynasty.

Why use a Buzzdroid over conventional weaponry that is guaranteed to destroy the target? I mean--Revenge of the Sith--those missiles were going to hit, but instead they OVERSHOOT a fighter trying to outrun it, then deploy the droids, who then futily waste precious screen time for ZERO plot purpose.

It's a callback to WW1 stories of gremlins attacking ships in the air. Very much in line with the inspirations of star wars.

I would make it so they could only be removed by a red maneuver, or something like that instead of an action
