Before anyone says that I haven't read the rules of Gunnery checks, I have and I know Gunnery checks cannot be made at Engaged range. I just found it a bit strange that you couldn't use a laser minigun at close range.

You find it strange that you can't use a harness mounted, 1.5 meter long multi-barrelled whirling object of death spitting to shoot someone trying to stab you with a knife?

Get a 10kg 1.5m long tubular lump of something padded, gaff-tape it to yourself and have a friend start hitting you with a nerf-stick. See how easy it is to point the shooty end at them. We can call this ScIEncE!!! ;-)

On a serious and slightly munchkin note, just disengage from engaged range as a manoeuvre, take 2 strain to aim, and then blast the offending target with an auto fire volley of doom from short range.

Or use it as an improvised melee weapon. It would probably make a decent club.
