JJ ABRAMS AND NEW DESIGNS

By LemOnLine, in X-Wing

then lets see some updated Es and Bs. and for that matter why are NORMAL ties still around?? lol

To use a real world analogy because they are cheap and already in production.

In WWII the luftwaffe (and associated factories) were forbidden for years in 'wasting time' on any design that would not be in service in a year.

Its why the Me262 took ages to be in service, it could have been in service by late 42 early 43 but hitler forbid research on it and then relented but insisted it had to be a bomber not a fighter.

So you see luftwaffe designs being refits of 109s, FW190s etc.

There were some truly brilliant fighter designs put out there in the 40s by the germans but they were not allowed to waste resources on them and instead told just to make more of what was a 'proven' design.

and for that matter why are NORMAL ties still around??

You can't assume those are Imperial ties. We don't know if the Empire even exists any longer or not. Those Ties could be junk fighters some pirate managed to scrounge up and use because the Empire has collapsed.

Or they may not be normal ties, maybe they're like the X-Wings... Look the same but aren't the same under the hood.

Yeah, we don't have a clear enough view of the TIEs to see if anything has been tweaked to the design.

So many people are assuming that the new X-wings are just "X-Wings" that happen to look different. Why haven't more people considered that this could be an all new ship... an X-Wing V2, or a X-Wing Advanced, or something to that effect.

Why haven't more people considered that this could be an all new ship...

I'm assuming it's a T-65(x) or maybe a T-66 X-Wing. Just like you see with some real world fighter jets. Same basic body but updated with new tech.

I really don't understand all the comments of " of they won't do those because it's a game set in the Galactic Civil War. " as one of the designers said this game focuses on the Galactic Civil War and going forward. What I ask would Episode VII be if not forward in the timeline ?

People were complaining about the E-wing being made in 12 ABY, 8 years after RotJ and not really in the GCW Era. Now people are excited for ships from a movie in 34 ABY, 30 years after RotJ definitely not in the GCW era. I'm just as confused as you are. But if we are gonna get into this era, I want StealthXs before we get the new stuff! :D

As for the people talking about getting them in the immediate future, I doubt it because FFG said they already have the next year planned out and ok'd so unless they have been privy to the new designs a lot longer than we have thought, they probably won't be in the immediate future.

I thought people complained about the e-wing because it looks like ass. :P.

30 ABY could still be in the galactic civil war era. By the old 'Legends' fiction, no, it isn't. But in the new canon continuity, we don't know what has happened post Endor. Perhaps the empire didn't crumble after palpatine took the tumble, but rallied under a less corrupt regime.

FFG likely wouldn't be able to release anything that reveals characters/ships till a few months befor the movie release. I would bet no sequel ships till 2016 at the earliest.

From a game mechanic standpoint I can't see FFG making any changes to the X-Wing. They may make a new miniature, but the "stats" will remain the same. I can't see FFG disallowing old models in tournaments for the same reason. A X-Wing is a X-Wing and a new model behaves exactly the same as the old one. Just like how one can use the Royal Guard TIE Interceptor for any TIE Interceptor pilot.

From a game mechanic standpoint I can't see FFG making any changes to the X-Wing.

They could also make a new expansion the X-Wing T-66 or whatever it may be called. New set of pilots, different stat lines, higher cost, ect...

So perhaps a 3 Attack, 3 Defense, 2 Hull, 3 Shield X-wing that starts at 22-23 points.

I think its pretty safe to assume that the Empire is some fashion still exists. Either as a remnant or as still a sizable force in the galaxy. I doubt those Stormtroopers we saw in the drop ship were part of the New Alliance.

So basically an E-wing?

If the new X-wings are lacking an Astromech, I would just make a title card to upgrade them into the newer versions we see.

Your upgrade bar loses the astromech upgrade and gains the System upgrade.

They could release a new model all together, I kind of hope they don't though. At least with ships we already have.

It doesn't look like a donkey or someone's rear end, but no, people were complaining because it was in the future.

There were some. But most were complaining about the look.

I would agree, but doesnt the movie come out in dec 2015, so maybe they could get them out by then?

Yes, the movie is next year, but board game/miniatures or the RPG are niche market items compared to the toys from hasbro. Fantasy Flight is unlikely to be given the go ahead to design and market ships before the movie. FFG are a small operation in the grand scheme of things. While I hope I am wrong, I honestly don't believe we will see sequel ships for quite a while. The toys are mass marketable items. The stuff, albeit great stuff, from FFG is not mass marketable despite what anyone here will say.

Didn't stop WOTC from getting access to ROTS and getting access and still releasing the The Force Unleashed set a year before the game. If LFL wants FFG's games to be part of the marketing blitz, then they will get just enough info to make the stuff. Even Decipher had very, very limited info on Episode I when they started work on the first Episode I set. Which was sort of funny, because LFL force them to do it.

I mean, FFG apparently also has some info on what is coming, based on them accidentally bumping into no go areas.

The imperial equipment in the trailer was not old equipment that pirates were using. Both the Stormtrooper armor and the TIE Fighters were new equipment and well maintained. If anything only the Rebel equipment looked run down. I think that's a HUGE clue that the Empire is still in control of a large part of the galaxy, possibly even still the galactic government.

People need to get the EU out of their heads when thinking of this. We know NOTHING of galactic affairs after RotJ. Not even the most basic thing. Other than the Alliance and the Empire still exist in some form. Everything you think you know, you don't.

As for ships from the new movies being used in X-Wing, of course they will. The Prequels weren't used because space combat was a minor part of those movies. There isn't even really an iconic ship you can point to that is shown throughout the prequel trilogy so we have no real attachment to them. Now count the amount of spaceships just shown in the teaser trailer. Spaceship combat is obviously going to be a much larger component of the new trilogy. And the ships don't seem that technologically advanced over the OT either. So there's no reason to make a separate game for it.

But more importantly it's a lot easier for FFG to decide not to support an era of Star Wars that was fading out at the time the game came out than it is to decide not to use stuff from the era only now beginning, that will be the core of Star Wars for the next 10 years.

And why wouldn't they? The fans they are specifically targeting with their game lineup is OT fans and fans of the 90's EU. Those fans on average are not passionate about the PT. But the Sequel Trilogy is going out of it's way to win them over.

Man, I can't disagree with a single thing you just said. Bravo.

Basically for me, the second they put stuff from this generic SciFi film into X-wing I will bid the game good-day. But to each his own.

You're right, because Star Wars didn't set the trend for "generic sci-fi" or anything. I guess looking like itself / what it spawned is bad.

Hard to be sure because Chris was talking about doing some new things for X-Wing in that nice long chat after the GenCon presentation. He specifically talked about how they had some contact from Disney saying more or less hold up we need to talk... (about what you FFG guys want to make?) so who can say.

I am certain however that some Rebels ships will be in our Star Wars X-Wing... X-Mas 2015.

^_^

But if we are gonna get into this era, I want StealthXs before we get the new stuff! :D

Outright overwritten by the new stuff.

Stealth x would just be a bog standard x-wing with an extra dodge die they didn't cloak like the phantom.

And there's already x-wings and b-wings taking up that design space.

StealthX would be a black X-wing with lighter weaponary, less armour and an inability to communicate with other X-wings.
