Opportunist vs. Rebel Captive

By Dopey, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Game Situation:

Keyan Farlander w/ Opportunist is firing at a ship w/ Rebel Captive

Which stress happens first? Stress from Opportunist or stress from Rebel Captive? If Rebel Captive happens first then I cannot use Opportunist? If Opportunist happens first then I am double stressed from Rebel Captive.

Thoughts?

The decision is made by the player with initiative.

The decision is made by the player with initiative.

I don't think this is correct, because the two abilities don't have the same timing.

Rebel Captive activates when the target is selected, in Step 1. Opportunist adds an additional die, which is a process that occurs in Step 2.

My bad :)

Opportunist triggers "When attacking", not "When rolling attack dice".

Attacking first requires a declared target, before attack dice are rolled.

Attacking does not require a declared target. "When attacking" is met as soon as the Declare Target step begins. It has to be for abilities which modify target selection to work, such as primary weapon turrets: When attacking with a turret primary weapon, a ship may target an enemy ship inside or outside its firing arc. A ship is attacking as long as it's in the attack process, and defending from the time it's selected as a target until the end of the attack process.

And even though it's a "When attacking" filter, modifiers which change the number of attack dice are explicitly added in Step 2. Opportunist does nothing to alter that, so it's used in Step 2.

So Rebel captive switches off Opportunist then?

Barring some way to keep the stress from landing (Yorr, Porkins), yes it will.
