Solo Play Variant (Much Pics Included!)

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing

So, when I get bored, and no one is home, I still like to play some X-wing. I am currently working through a methdology that would allow either solo play, or coop play, without needing an opponent player, or AI.

Here is the gist:

A small base has become the target of an Imperial Assault. The Empire's oversight was not noting that the base was well defending by a few Rebel ships getting some much needed RnR.

On my game mat (a Chessex play mat) I marked off a space roughly 36x32. Sadly the mat isn't quite large enough for 36x36, but oh well.

I laid out 8 spaces, each range 2 from the nearest corner, and numbered them 1-8. I have an 8-sided die handy and will roll it at the start of each round to see from when a TIE Fighter will enter the area to start it's run.

In the middle of the mat, I drew out a space station, roughly range 2 x range 2.

I placed a few TIEs around the board, and loaded in my list.

Chewie + EI + Kyle + Jan + Expose

Fringer + HLC + Outrider + Recon

In order to keep things simple, the enemy will follow these parameters

Movement: Slowest straight movement available

(for a TIE this is a Green 2)

Actions: If a clear shot will be available on either the base or an enemy ship, take a Focus.

Otherwise Barrel Roll for a better shot.

If BRing will not give you a shot, take a Focus.

Focuses are always spent defensively first, as needed.

Firing: Fire on your closest target.

The Space Station has 20 health, and no Agility.

Winning and Losing

The player wins if they destroy 8 TIEs

The Empire wins if they destroy the base.

And here is Chewie, one shotting a TIE at R1 using Expose and a Focus.

this seems fun, though I feel like the only straight maneuvers would be odd. "Sir. They're not taking any evasive action. They're just flying straight."

Could be pretty cool though.

Might be fun in reverse as well where you're assaulting the base in the middle, base has firing arcs, and maybe a Decimator is set to just continuously circle the base.

So I ran it again last night. Both times my base has been chewed up pretty quickly. I'm thinking of adding 1 agility die to the base - because it's moving and rotating and so it can be a pain to lock in on.

So far I've only played it solo, but may be able to get my wife in on a game tonight.
