Finding build ideas when you don't own everything?

By bmwrider, in X-Wing

I am trying to learn to create better builds and getting started with rebels.

The problem is I don't own any big rebel ships and most posted builds use the cards from YT, Transport, tantive or rebel aces for that matter.

So how do I find build ideas when I lack so many key cards?

For example I am trying to build with my new VT 49 and a Ten Numb build and all builds use some of these cards.

Ten Numb — B-Wing 31

Marksmanship 3

Autoblaster 5

Wedge Antilles — X-Wing 29

R2-D2 4

Kyle Katarn — HWK-290 21

Blaster Turret 4

Moldy Crow 3

I figure there are better builds with my cards but how do I find ideas?

Look at your cards instead of at the internet. Your own ideas should be popping up pretty soon. When you don't know what to improve, play some games and see what works and what doesn't.

If you are playing amongst friends you can always use printed out cards. As long as you have the right ships there shouldn't be a problem.

Mr Numb isn't that good a pilot. His ability gets used rarely especially when you encounter low agi targets. The crit gets cancelled last and can be absorbed by shields or evade tokens. The autoblaster only works at range 1, so most opponents can outrun the relatively slow Bwing. Sure, Interceptors at range 1 will hate your guts, but with BRoll and Boost it almost impossible to get them there. Against 1-2 agi targets, your normal 4 dice primary attack would have been better.

Using your current collection, I'd go with a rebel swarm (-ish) list. You dont have the right cards to supplement the high tier named pilots, but there is nothing wrong with XZBB with an additional Ion!

Roark Garnet (19)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

I'd drop the Autoblaster for an Ion for Ten Numb. His ability means he always Ions a small base ship with a Critical. Also a number of squad builders are able to store your lists; they 'gray out' what's not available to you. Most of my ideas come to me while list building on my phone. Currently this one is working best for me: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

do what you did. Post what you have and ask for advice. I play rebels most of the time and rarely bring a large base ship.

Garvin and dutch have been the foundation of many a good list

Garvin

Dutch with ion

Blue Squadron With FCS

Blue Squadron

3 extra actions per round makes this a solid list with lots of red dice and a fair amount of HP as well.

See also Biggs walks the doggs.

Biggs in the back with some B-wings or Xwings up front. Flavor to taste

I think that ten numb is pricey for what he brings to the table. my 2 cents.

If you fly the following in formation it could be quite dangerous. Just keep Biggs in the back and use Kyle to pass him a focus. Kyle will shoot with no modifiers, but he's Ion'ing anyway, so just shoot at targets that have low agility. I recommend a pinwheel formation.

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-F2 (3)

Kyle Katarn (21)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Recon Specialist (3)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Total: 100

edit: A recon specialist fits in, so Kyle has two focus, one to give away to Biggs.

since you have a YT, consider han with a couple of escorts.

HSF Han shoots first Lists were all the rage before "fat han" and It's still a solid list in my opinion.

Back him up with an X and a Y or a pair of Xs and you have another solid list

I especially like expert handling on Han, as rolling a large base ship is just fun, and thematic, and will totally mess with your opponent's plans

Consider picking up rebel aces when you can, it has to really good bwing pilots and will add the A-wing to your fleet as well.

Are those "3 Interceptors" from one expansion and one Aces box? That kind of information can certainly help people know what you have when asking for help based only on the things you actually have. The same thing with the TIEs and X-Wings.

For your listed build I'd also recommend against Ten Numb especially if you want to add autoblasters.

When it comes to ideas I believe you have a lot of open possibilities. I see 2 Defenders which means 2 copies of Predator plus a Falcon and Firespray (and I'm guessing an ImpAces) so you really don't hurt for upgrade cards. Other than that as they say most ships come with the upgrades you'll really want to be using with them. You have lots of possibilities and many of those can even be close to some of what you see posted by people with no restrictions on pieces.

I own a falcon but none of the stuff that goes with it yet, got naked ship used.

Yeah I have been trying to get rebel aces for while now, it will come in due time.

or mess around with one of the numerous squad builders on line. the one i use allows you to only use the cards/ships in your inventory.. makes squads easy to assemble and compare.. This is the one I use:

Thanks for the help.

That certainly complicates things while also making your "collection list" less reliable when it comes to judging available upgrades. I see you've since changed the list which may be a good thing as far as the upgrade discussion goes although provided you have all the Falcon pilots it can still be a nice ship to put in your squadron as many of its upgrades often come from other places.
