what about a new edition bloodbowl boardgame

By jimbobaroo, in Blood Bowl: Team Manager

now that fantasy flight games as got the blood bowl license how good would it be to see a new edition blood bowl game. with all new modelled teams. I for one would buy it and I would also buy teams that they produce. I'd like to see it released with 4 standard teams say humans, orcs, elves and chaos.

then they could release new teams on a regular basis.

sounds like a license to print money

I would only be interested if they re-did the rules.

The current version is actually quite well-balanced, but I find the gameplay dreadfully boring. Cage, stall, hope the armor rolls are good for you, bad for your opponent. Stall some more...

It's a turnoff for people who go into it thinking they will get the excitement of Mutant League football.

The theme deserves better. I actually think this card game does a better job of capturing the "feel" than the board game.

yeah I know what you mean about the cage. The general concept is fantastic but maybe introduce some new moves and skills to add some more dynamics to the game

But yes, I agree, if FFG were to put their considerable game design resources to a rebuild of the rules, plus their awesome ability to produce minis... yes FFG would steal even more of my money :)

I think some changes in basic game mechanics would be necessary to make the game more dynamic and funny.

- Passing is rarely a good option. Improving Passing the ball instead of walking with it (and handover) would give the game a bit more openness.

- Skills are way too imbalanced. A levelup is mostly invested in Block or Dodge. Making the specific skills more even, would create a more diversified game.

- Turnovers suck. I dont get it, it makes the game so chess like. Having a bad dice roll should not result in half of you team standing around doing nothing.

- Why is there only one Blitz per turn? Of course, one would have to rearrange a lot of the rules, but it would add a lot of dynamic. Only one Blitz per Turn feels so unrealistic.

- Having Kickoff is a bit too imbalanced. Not only having the ball - being the first one to move and tackle, results in very different siuations for the both players.

I the past i did some experiments with a new rule mechanic. You activate one figure and do stuff with him, then its the other players turn to activate one figure. Hard to explain. You dont make a full turn, but only move one figure, then the other plyer, then you again... until both players used all their figures. Then the first turn ended. It changed a lot in tactics and mechanics, but it seemed to be fun. However, it was difficult to remember what figure already had its turn. For this reason, i quit this experiment. Still a mechanic to think about.

I kind of doubt that GW has given up the license for the property. More likely they have only granted a license to FFG for the card game, similar to what they did with the computer game. But I could be wrong?

I have played the tabletop version for a number of years and would dread any major changes to the game. Yes, it needs some work to make it competitive with today's eurostyle boardgames. I think mainly it would need to be streamlined, which is what most of the Bloodbowl clones have tried to do.

My suggestions would be:

1. Reduce the number of minis and the size of the field. This helps cutdown on game time. An average game for us, takes about 4 hours. Way too long for most people!

2. Simplify the rule mechanics wherever possible. The rules are for the most part, pretty simple. However make sure all the rules use the same mechanics and cut out extraneous skills that don't use those. Avoid math where possible, most people get bogged down or confused if they have to start adding/subtracting several modifiers.

3. Limit the number of special skills on players. For example, give most all linemen "block" but make it very hard for them to get anything else.

4. Keep the flavor. The last thing I would want to see in the game are easy "Go For Its". The game should remain challenging, with epic failures and successes. That to me has always been the heart of the game.

Historically, GW has been reluctant to let FFG anywhere near making normal scale minis, to protect their core market (and, I suspect, to avoid questions of why their mini prices are so inflated). If FFG did gain the Bloodbowl board game license, I wonder if they'd shift position on this?

Re: the rules of the boardgame, the real dealbreaker for me in the existing rules is the Guard skill. It totally messes up the positional dynamic of the game, and a game where there is a tonne of Guard is way less interesting than one played with starting teams.

I would only be interested if they re-did the rules.

OMFG. I think it's time someone like 2k remade the mutant league games.
