A-wing Aces

By Narcoleptic, in X-Wing Battle Reports

thanks for the input on this list. A few friends of mine helped me with a 5 A-Wing build. This is what I took to regionals this past weekend and had some good games when i changed out my dice. Enjoy the report

Tycho:

Test pilot

refit

autothrusters

DD

PTL

Gemmer:

test pilot

refit

autothrusters

VI

X3 Proto:

refit

round one: Han and Ten Numb

Han had Lando and c3-po, EU, PTL

Ten had mangler cannon, AdvS, VI

focus for this match was Ten since he can always hurt my ships. I lost a proto on the turn I killed Ten. I kept Han occupied with Gemmer and really annoyed my opponent. I kept plinking shields off Han but in the end it wasn't enough. Han blasted another proto from the sky in the last minute changeing me from a win to a modified win. I killed 39 points and lost 30

round doom (two):

howlrunner

academy pilot

x2 alpha squadron

Echo with Adv Cloak

Karma took it out of my hide with this one. 4 Turns I had Echo without a cloak token, Tycho and Gemmer had 4 turns each with range 1 shots and rolled blanks every time. The protos didn't fair as well either, 9 shots range one into howlrunner range one and all blanks as well. on the receiving end only Gemmer had any luck with avoiding damage. turn 4 all the protos died, turn 5 tycho died, turn 6 gemmer went down. Gemmer's final damage came from a range 3 shot from the academy pilot 2 hits and I had 6 dice to dodge it. All I needed was one evade for gemmer to live and i rolled 6 focus, Gemmer had an evade token and went down.

round three:

x4 sydicate thug with ion cannon turrets, BTL/A4, R4 Agromechs AKA Thug Lyfe

I was so sad to get this match up. I played against my buddy who drove down there with me. It lasted 8 turns. I bagged one Y-wing, Tycho died turn 4 after bumping an unfortunate ionned proto and ate all 8 attacks from the Y-wings before getting downed from the last one to shoot his ion. 3 turns later gemmer was the last to die. my dice did not want to play that round either.

round four:

Dash HLC, outrider

X2 blue squadron with AdvS

I changed my dice out after 2 horrible games of blanks and almost had the easiest match of the day. opponet placed dash on the edge facing the edge. I would have felt awful for winning this If I let it happen so I asked a few times if he was absolutely sure he wanted dash that way. the third time he caught it and I had a much more enjoyable game.

turn one: Tycho and Gemmer chased the blues and the protos swarmed Dash. Dash vaporized proto #2 and the protos retaliated a got 3 shields off the outrider.

turn tw0: tycho and Gemmer shredded shields off of blue #1 and got a direct hit! proto #3 blocked dash and proto #1 got in range 1 and got another shield off of Dash. Dash had no shots, proto #3 got the last hit on blue #1. Gemmer disengaged blue #2 and chased dash. I guessed wrong and Gemmer didnt make range 1 of dash but was in range 1 of blue #2. Tycho got 3 shields off blue #2 protos and Gemmer got dash to 4 hull left.

turn three: Gemmer still didn't make range 1 and keep arc and wiffed his attack. Protos stayed in range 1 and finally got dash. Tycho stayed on the back side on blue #2 and got him to 2 hull.

turn four: Tycho finished out the round with killing blue #2.

Final round:

slim fast Han: Falcon Title, Engine Upgrade, Lando, Nien Numb, PTL

Wild Spacer: HLC, Outrider

I was a bit nervous against a deep dish list but the round went well. I didn't lose a proto until after Han died and then the swarm blocked and stayed in range 1 of the spacer and knocked him from the sky.

All in all I shocked quite a few people with a 5 A-Wing list and if my rolls were better in my second match I would have had a good shot at top 16. My analysis of Gemmer being a major thorn in the side of my opponents. in every match I lost all my squad, Gemmer was the last to die. most rounds people shot at him 3 or 4 turns before going for the protos.

I was the Thug Lyfe guy, and I spent something to the tune of 16 attacks total throwing dice at Gemmer, and hit only 4 of those attacks for 1 damage each time. That little A-wings ability to waste your opponents shots is next to godlike.

ok time for another report. Vassal play on the 19th.

I ran 6 A-Wings (gemmer and 5 protos) and got to play 2 games.

first game was over pretty quickly because I tried flying in a squadron against a scum fett and IG2K-B.

scum fett wercked my list with his extra rerolls for people close to him. he constantly had 2-3 rerolls when i tried a wolf pack tactic and the IG2K would blast one of them after fett would weaken one. all in all it was over in about half an hour.

game 2 was much more interesting and way longer than it should have been. I ran the same list i had against a generic firespray-31, soonter, and turr.

about the 20 minute mark was when the first damage was delt to both sides. Gemmer lost a shield and the firespray lost 2. at the 45 minute mark gemmer was down to 1 hull and 3 of the protos had lost a shield. Soonter had taken a crit that landed an extra damage on him and turr took damage landing on and flying off of a rock and the firespray was on it's last legs. at the hour and 5 minute mark the firespray went down with my first A-Wing going down a few turns later. the match became a game of cat and mouse for the next hour with no damage being traded. at the 2 hour 5 minute mark I lost 2 more A-wings went down. I never got another shot on his guys after my blockers went down and in the next 10 minutes I finally got tabled.

I hate that you've moved on to 5-6 A-Wings, I want 2-3 more now :(

I haven't moved on, my thread's been hijacked. :P

Still going strong with 3 A-wings, haven't gotten any games in lately though.

I haven't moved on, my thread's been hijacked. :P

I thought this was just a thread to share mostly A-Wing battle reports. I play tuesdays and try to have my reports up by wendsday

Nah, I started this thread to document my results in the first post and add reports as I go along. Since I play this type of list very often in competitive play I figured I'd keep it all together.

I ran the following at a store championship in my area on Friday

Tycho Celchu

Push the Limit

Chardaan Refit

Autothrusters

A Wing Test Pilot

Predator

Jake Farrell

Push the Limt

Chardaan Refit

Autothrusters

A Wing Test Pilot

Outmaneuver

Tala Squadron Pilot

Bandit Squadron Pilot x2

Cost 99 points and took 2nd with it.

how did predator work out for you? I always liked to run outmanuver over predator for A-Wings since they can get there super easy.

It worked out fairly well, however I've tinkered with my list to counter lists with higher pilot skills like Soontir as well as giving my mini Z95 swarm a bit of a punch.

Still at 99 points

The 2 biggest challenges in the tournament I was facing lists with higher pilot skills, such as Duel IGs with VI or Soontir lists, the other was my Z's lacked an Alpha strike. Having Tycho and Jake at pilot skills of 10 and 9 I feel would be a HUGE advantage in firing first. Adding clusters still gives me 99 points total, which will give me initiative more often then not, not to mention they're far more effective against specific targets theoretically you can devastate opponents with the two attacks you get with Clusters.

Alrighty folks it's time for another report of Penguin's Uncanny A-Wings

today's list includes:

Gemmer: 30 pts

test pilot

prockets

autothrusters

PTL

prototype pilot: 17 pts x4

refit

autothrusters

total points 98

round one:

soonter fel

dark curse

4 academy pilots

This match was streamed on twitch tv under the tag lessthangeek (I was only on the video for the first and very last round when the camra was moved)

the game went to time with only one proto having damage and one academy pilot with 1 hull left. about turn 4 gemmer hit soonter with the prockets for 4 and soonter wiffed the roll with no tokens. the wolf pack tactic worked really well and I managed to out position his guys more often than his on mine. At the suggestion of varrious members of the forums I took some fire power on gemmer at the cost of a 6th A-Wing and it worked great. round win 87-0

round 2:

Lando and Corran

Again this round went to time but had more devastating results. My opponent consistently took the route that was least expected and didn't make sense just to throw off my blocks. I had a few turns of blasting corran and lando but wiffed on the attack or corran just regened the shield the next turn. I had 3 prototype pilots left at time with the shields off lando and corran down to hull. round lost 0-47

round 3:

IG2K B+C

I looked forward to the double IG list all night and got to put my pilots to the test in this round. I spent the first 40 minutes knocking shields off both of them and managed to have 1 damage card on the gunner one. Gemmer got the best shot in with his prockets for 4 damage and got the other IG2k down to hull. Then my luck changed for the worse. I ran out of blockers to stall and bumb his ships and they moved to range 2 and started belting the A-wings with twin HLC with gunner. The round went to time with only gemmer dying at the end and all protos having a damage on them. round loss 0-30

round 4: Master and Apprentice

for the past few weeks i have been coaching a new player to the finer points of flying A-Wings and was matched against my own padowan. You can probably imagine the pain that it brought me to have to play him in a tournament. his list as follows:

action man Tycho:

PTL

DD

refit

test pilot

EI

Gemmer:

test pilot

VI

autothrusters

refit

Super Kayen:

AdvS

HLC

B-Wing/E-2

Jan Ors

I was glad that this one went to time. Kayen got eaten alive by the protos once they boxed him in with no shot around turn 4. Gemmer missed an opertunity to launch the prockets at Tycho in the same round to which saved me the game in the end. trying to catch tycho and gemmer with a bunch of protos is beyond impossible to do so i waited almost the entire game to actually get damage on the guy. gemmer took some hits and tycho went to hull in the round before time was called and in overtime gemmer got into range 1 of tycho with a focus to launch those prockets finally. gemmer got 4 hits and tycho evaded 2 leaving me with exact change in damage to snub the win. he managed to blast 3 protos in the last 2 turns, 2 of which were in overtime. round win 75-51

this was my first tournament where I didn't bring Tycho and I was surprised that I didn't get tabled once. overall I placed 7th out of 18 by trashing the MOV of my opponets which wasn't my intention but it did help me out.

Has anyone tried Arvel Crynyd with PRockets, Autothrusters, A-Wing Test Pilot, and Intimidation? Ram or block a big base ship like an IG, no action for it, TL the turn before with a focus this turn to shoot the Rocket....5 attack dice with modification vs. max 2 agility and no action...even with my rolling I like those odds.

You also have exactly enough points left over to bring Tycho and Jake with all the trimmings, including their own PRockets!

Has anyone tried Arvel Crynyd with PRockets, Autothrusters, A-Wing Test Pilot, and Intimidation?

As a matter of fact I did try something very similar with arvel. no prockets but it was a pain in the butt to try and ram arvel into another ship since all my opponents avoided him like a hurricane. I ditched intimidation on him and went with daredevil to garuentee the ram. GSP with daredevil and intimidation is fantastic for reducing the AGI on big ships like an IG2k or even on those pesky lower PS ships like tie fighters and Z's to wipe them off the board easier

As i posted in your battle report discussion, i have some questions about your latest build:

Tycho Celchu

- PtL

- Test Pilot

- Daredevil

- PR

- EI

Jake Farrell

- PtL

- Test Pilot

- VI

- PR

- SD

Green Sqdr. Pilot

- PtL

- Ion Pulse Missile

- SD

Wouldn't be better to keep the total cost to 99 pts? I really want my Jake move after Soontir/VI Whisper/Wedge/Han and other ps9 ships.

Why ion Missiles on the green? Did you find them useful?

I've been thinking of concussions for the green and AT on both Jake and Green, or ions on green and AT for one and Sd on the other, keeping to 99pts for the initiative bid. What do you think about that?

What about obstacles selection and placing?

Thanks in advance if you want to answer

Sorry about a late answer, haven't been hanging around this part of the forum for a while.

The Ion Pulse Missile was very helpful in the Regional I played earlier. It basically gave me the victory in the quarter final as it ioned an IG onto a rock which died next round. Since the meta here in my part of Sweden is centered around large ships, giving me the option of control proved invaluable. Against a small ship meta I'd probably go for PR instead since small ships can't boost away as easily as a large ship can.

As for initiative bid I would gladly go for 99p if there were any corners I could cut, but this list desperately needs every upgrade it has. I won't change a SD for AT, no way. I don't have the time to maneuver into range 3 and then back in the way you can do with IGs. Time is of the essence for this list and therefore it needs to stay in combat, outmaneuvering enemies with Jake and Tycho and going for as many Range 1 shots as possible. As I cannot avoid every arc every round I don't want to have to consider going out to range 3 for a defensive bonus, I'd rather have it constantly, get a Range 1 shot while taking a Range 2 shot e.g. Focus+Evade and 4 green dice work wonders. If I face a PS9 ship I can either hope to win the roll or hope that my opponent takes the initiative (it actually happens). If I end up with initiative I can simply ignore the PS9 ship and go for the other ships in the list, while constantly keeping the threat of a PR in his face. If Soontir comes blasting in from a flank I'll just turn an arc on him so he'll end up in range 1 and flee the PR. Like when I fought a shuttle, VI-Turr and Soontir. The greenie baited the shuttle, Tycho cruised behind the shuttle slowly killing it with his primary while Jake kept Turr and Soontir busy.

Obstacles is not an issue with this list as neither of them really cares about that. So I will focus 100% on making the asteroids be a nuisance for my opponent. It all depends on what list they're flying. Mostly I pick the large asteroid and 2 random mediums. You could go for a debris field to give Tycho a free lane, but that's optional.

Thanks for answering!

I still find AT pretty useful on the Green one so i can deal with turrets and keep range 3 until shooting the IPM. Green is also seen as an easy target so if they shoot him at range 3 i can be pretty sure he won't be hurt as long i can put an evade token on him.

Do you think to use the new critic missile on the green maybe? It may provide some help interdicting flying of many fragile enemies, even more then the IPM i guess.

No, that won't be particularly useful. Most fragile high priority targets will dodge 3 dice with ease most of the time. It'd just be useful against Corran and IGs, but they both have 3 agi and higher PS, which means they can avoid range 2.
