Carrying Around Your X-Wings

By zakueins, in X-Wing

So, how do you transport your fighters from home to game and back again? I'm looking for a way to carry my fighters (and maybe even a YT-2400 and/or Millennium Falcon), rules, counters, and such pretty easily. Big bonus points if it's a single bag/box.

Plano. Red box

I use the red Plano box too, like Popn618 said above. Mine holds: 2x Core Set/7x small ship expansions/1x large ship(Lambda Shuttle) expansion, 1x extra dice set, and I and still have room to grow.

I have the cards and ships in multiple small boxes (lunch and index-card boxes; thank you Goodwill). I have my dice, play tokens, range and maneuver templates, damage deck, and asteroids in a tie case, which is long and keeps them straight. All this, as well as my felt play mat, goes in a sling bag, which allows me to take it all with me on the bicycle.

I tote my squads to and from the FLGS in a Plano red box from Menard's. I can get two squads, which I sometimes get creative with and have it so I can get another squad out of the ships I load, all tokens, templates, asteroids, dice, rulebook, and range ruler. The cards also fit comfortably. I store things in a Plano 732, though I am trying to decide what to do when faction 3 comes out. The 732 holds my entire fleet, and should also fit wave 5 when I pick it up this week.

I fill my front pockets with the tokens, cards go in my wallet in my back pocket and models I hold in my mouth.

I got a big chunk of foam out of an old chair we had and cut some slots for each ship I own. Two layers, and it fits my whole fleet in a triple-pack diaper box courtesy of my infant son.

Templates, card, asteroids, dice, etc. are all in a box that sits on the top of the ensemble.

I just got a Plano 1374 from Amazon. A guy I played against at my local store a few weeks back was using it and I loved it so I ordered one. Yes it's big but if you have a large collection it's great. I've got everything in it less 6 Tie Fighters and 4 X-Wings as I have too many of those anyways. I don't have any Wave 4 or 5 ships yet but got the space laid out for them when I get them from my wife for Christmas. That will probably be all I can fit without some significant rearranging when Wave 6 comes out. Plus the top has room for both the Tantive and Transport.

Plano. Red box

^^ditto with the Plano box.

Plano tackle boxes or battlefoam.

Sadly... or maybe not sadly, lol I need 2 red planos for my ships, and a tote bag with all my large ships in their original plastic boxes.

I use a big plano, with foam inserts that I cut myself to immobilize ships. Cheap and effective. Also, pretty snazzy with the application of inexpensive rebel and imperial decals.

It does fill up more quickly than it would if I wasn't using foam inserts. It's a tradeoff I make for the safety of the models.

My storage solution

Yeah... I've ended up using a Plano per faction. But i got cool stickers to put in the outside of each so I know which faction it is. (My wife thinks I may be a 10 year old kid)

The Plano 5231.

Pretty much inspired by this video:

I highly recommend getting a binder for the cards though. It helps with setup because it is nightmare trying to find specific cards if you make decks out of them (there's just so many!)

That video is what led me to that Red Plano case. I currently have two, but with my ever expanding collection I am working towards a more flexible and convenient storage solution.

This isn't mine, but what I found after researching months ago. My ultimate goal is to use this a framework and improve on it to fit my needs.

Of course, this solution and many others that people are posting are to hold their ENTIRE collections, but if you just need something small to take to a tournament or game night, you could get by with much less. Honestly I'd take a child's or woman's shoe box and put some magnetic sheets down on the bottom and put washers on your ship bases. Get a small organizer type container for tokens and you are set. Organize your Pilot and Upgrade cards to your preference...most solutions (outside of binders) would fit in a small shoe box.

Plano 5231 again. Gets the best mileage. Even can hold the cards if you don't have a lot of ships. If you do. Binder works better.

I've really liked my plano 1374

I did that as well, and I put small ones on the sides cause I use tote bags to carry them.. lol.. I also have a set waiting for my S&V plaplano o.. lol.. yeah.. I'm 10 as well.. lol

I kind of want one of Battlefoam's C4 bags for a small tote bag, to use in addition to my PACK 216. I typically just fly the small-based ships, and that would be perfect to transport cards, and ships. But I dislike how they are cut for either a rebel or imperial playlist. I keep going back and forth if I want them since they are on sale. I have thought about just doing the pluck, but the pluck from them, so I could customize shapes that would fit multiple ships or something too.

Anyone use the C4 bag and like/dislike it?

I find Plano to be a big investment myself.

I'm currently using a couple of these, easily had at any hobby and crafts store in Europe for about 16 euros:

Each layer contains two inserts of three compartments each and each compartment comfortably holds a small base ship and all necessities except pilot card. The bottom layer is less high and nicely holds cards and maneuvertemplates. I haven't checked if a Lambda fits if you take the inserts out, but it should.

The layers clip onto each other so you can tower as tall as you want. As long as you don't go swinging it around your ships will do fine.

The only thing that really doesn't fit is the range ruler.

Heh, I just toss mine in a bucket with all the game pieces.

I just luuuv my Feldherr backpack. I did a small review here. It goes where I go :)

Currently it has multiples of every Wave 1-4 ship and aces packs. One foam layer is completely intact for Wave 5.

I use a Plano 1374 (http://www.amazon.com/Plano-1374-4-By-System-Tackle/dp/B000E3FKTO)

Yes it's big but I wanted to be able to grow into it as my collection grows.

  • Top holds all of my big ships in their cut down clamshells (MF, Slave I, YT-2400 and Shuttle)
  • One tray holds all off the templates and tokens
  • One tray holds all of my rebel ships plus dials/bases for each: 2 X, 2 Y, 2 B, 2 A, 1 E, 1 Z, 1 HWK
  • One tray holds all of my empire ships: 3 fighters, 1 phantom, 2 interceptors, 1 advanced, 1 bomber, 1 defender
  • Last tray is mostly empty with damage cards, upgrade cards and dials/bases for the new YT-2400
