Deck burn - possible?

By Ashcroftt, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

I was trying real hard to build a deck that focuses on burning (discarding) the opponents deck, and uses this as a winning condition, but I always failed miserably. Is there even a remote possibility of accomplishing this? I can see that this is totally impossibe with only the LCG cards, but could someone show me a few working decks using legacy cards?

before bannings -

Hastur version - saturnalia + behind the pallid mask

despite bannings (with 4 of rule)-

yog/shub/MU/neutral combo deck, using black moore estate + shining trap. (before errata) plus lot of draw / stalling (glimpse of the void) plus adoration of thoth / adoration of uphaut / time to reap to undrain all domains/ trapez / estate and deck opponent.

Is the deck viable with 3 of rule, plus errata - hard to say :)

I actually have a Milling / Discard / Control LCG deck that is working quite well.

It is made of Miskatonic, Yog, Hastur, and some Neutrals. The control aspect of it delays the opponent well enough so that the milling can occur. Once the blackmoor estates get in play, it's usually only a few turns before the game is over. Adding in the discard element also helps to slow the opponent down pretty well especially if you can hit them with some discards in the first few turns.

I'll try and post up the main cards of the deck soon.

Here's a very old (obviously legacy) Agency-Cthulhu-Yog-Neutral deck which worked quite well. It was built around the time "Masks of Nyarlathotep" came out, so lacks many good cards which emerged with Forgotten Cities and the asylum packs. Was built pre-Shining Trap errata, but that shouldn't kill it.

I would definitely change it a bit nowadays, but back then it worked well. The Cannibal Ghast and Elder Thing Scientist provided early-game defence, then this deck just tries to eliminate all characters from play, every turn, while slowly milling the opponent. Frustrating to play against!

Oh, and about that deck above - you can use Dream Messenger to make anything a "Location" for the Fire to destroy... in case that wasn't obvious.
