Beginner : What I need to buy?

By XTREM1337, in Android: Netrunner The Card Game

I want to star play Netrunner with peeps at my local club.

I know that I need the core set but ... what else? does the expensions are important?

I just want to play with the best budget setup and I wont invest 300$ ... I droped MTG for this reason...

Thanks for your help.

Depends on how into it you want to get. Netrunner isnt CCG, but it can still get expensive due to all the expansions and deluxe expansions.

One core set can get you a good intro. The What Lies Ahead data pack is a great suppliment that helps the corporations be more varied and balanced.

A second core set wouldn't be bad either if you decide to gwt a bit more into it.

From there it's pick and choose which expansions have cards you want or you can go all in and get everything

Ok but If I buy the core game and I want to have 2 extensions to begin, which one you recommend?

What Lies Ahead for the corporation and which one for the Runners?

thanks for your help

Probably Opening Moves. Might want to look at deluxe expansions for specific factions.

I'm going to piggy back on this topic, since it seems there are more than a few "I'm new, what should I get?" topics.

I bought 1 core, played a few games with a friend, and decided to buy the 2 deluxe expansions (only because it looks like they will never be rotated out). I'm going to wait for Order and Chaos and buy that next.

As I'm enjoying Anarch and Weyland, what data packs should I look at, other than anything in the Genesis cycle?

Don't forget that Spin rotates out at the same time as Genesis. If you're avoiding Genesis because of rotation you should start at Lunar.

Nothing is getting rotated out for a few years yet though, so if you spend your money now you're still able to get plenty of value in terms of repeat play.

Athros, if you're enjoying Anarch and Weyland, you should also look into a second core set. Having 3x of all those 2x cards helps immeasurably, as does a second Grimoire.

CommissarFeesh: I should have clairified about the Genesis cycle, my apologies! Avoiding the Genesis cycle is more geared towards the fact that What Lies Ahead is ~55 USD + ~15-20 USD shipping (UK), and I can barely find any of the other data packs outside of the UK. I don't mind the rotation (Played L5R long enough to be part of 3 full set changes), I just figured having the big boxes would be helpful no matter what (even if it's just learning the other factions).

Grimwalker: Hrm. I was hoping to avoid buying a second core. I'll have to really think about it.

Probably worth waiting for the Genesis re-prints. Pretty sure they're coming. You don't wanna be dropping that kind of cash on them!

Out of curiosity, where did you find What Lies Ahead? I know people in the UK hunting for a copy; I don't know if they'll pay that ridiculous price, but they might if they really want it :S

I think a second core is really good value, since it also gives you more sets of 3x cards, enabling you to build multiple decks at once.

CommissarFeesh: I've been shopping on Amazon, since all of the local stores (South Denver, Colorado) don't carry any Netrunner, or only do special orders for anything other than M:tG. (I'm still wondering if there are local groups at this point, since I can't seem to find anything). I don't see it on the site any more, now it's all in Washington and Michigan. Cyber Exodus would be coming from By 4 Less UK.

Grimwalker: Ok. I'll put it on the list for after Order and Chaos. Also: Why not buy the identity packs from Team Covenant for Core? ( http://teamcovenant.com/store/netrunner-lcg/identity-packs.html?limit=all ) Other than Anarchs are sold out?

On the plus side, I should have Creation and Control + Honor and Profit by Thursday. Now to read some decklists and try to build a deck with just 1 Core, C+C and H+P

Which stores have you tried?

Denver Central Games may have a few copies. Total Escape in broomfield has a bunch of data packs (not sure what's in stock). Enchanted Grounds or Wizard's Chest are other options.

CoolStuffInc online may also have some options.

Edit: Also Crit Castle Games

nungunz: Denver Central didn't have any when I called, but then again, I called 3 times before someone answered the phone, so who knows if they knew, or were just saying they didn't to get me off the phone *shrug*

Total Escape, Enchanted Ground and Wizards chest are 45+ minutes away from me (I live in Castle Rock). CoolStuffInc I haven't tried (never heard of them before you) same for Crit Castle Games.

Identity packs are a horrible idea. I love the Team Covenant guys but their sales model makes me cringe.

1) You're paying much more out of pocket card-per-card.
2) Even if certain factions don't interest you, you still have Influence to spend in deckbuilding. I almost never play Criminal, but I am running Criminal cards in my decks such as Cache, Emergency Shutdown, and Switchblade.

3) kind of the same as #1, but if you ever do decide to expand your repertoire, you're going to pay so much money to round out the set that you might as well have bought the packs individually.

And reprints of Genesis Cycle are in the queue, so they'll be out in the next month or so. Don't pay scarcity prices, just print proxies of what you want to test with and make a shopping list for when they come available.

Grimwalker: I hadn't thought about it like that. I was thinking more along getting just the cars I wanted.

Creation and Control + Honor and Profit arrived today. My next purchase is going to be Order and Chaos, then data packs or a second core.

Order & Chaos probably won't be out for six weeks or so at least.

Grimwalker: huh. I thought it was going to be sooner. I guess I need to look at datapacks sooner than I thought.

Opening Moves is a definite - Howard Jackson is too good. Any other recommendations? I'm going to proxy for the Genesis cycle if I can't find it at normal pricing

What Lies Ahead for the corp agendas is well worth it

nungunz: I can't find What Lies Ahead for anything less than $55, as I stated earlier.

actually my overall recommendation is the same as it is for Genesis Cycle. I bought in quite late to A Game of Thrones, and just started buying every pack as it came out and then proxied everything I needed out of the back catalogue, and sort of bought packs in the order of which had the cards I wanted to use.

So just make a list of everything from Genesis and Spin, and put hash marks next to each pack name of how many cards you want from it, and note if there are any which you definitely want irrespective of what else there is.

I can check what TEG has laying around

Thanks to nungunz for checking on a store that's a long ways away from me, I managed to snag:

What Lies Ahead at $15

Future Proof at $15

Opening Moves

True Colors

Now to really dig into deck building.

True Colors was my first expansion pack from the core set. It was recommended to me because I liked the NBN faction and it had some good cards as well as a good agenda for NBN.

Other than that I got the big packs just to get more identities. What Lies Ahead also has some good cards in it.

I had some store credit at coolstuff burning a hole in my pocket. I just started playing the new DBZ card game, and some of the guys play Android. I heard it was really good, so I took the plunge without even playing a game. I got 2 core sets, one of the deluxe packs, and 4 of the data packs. Can't wait for it all to get here next week so I can dig in! Hoping to also play a game or two this weekend to see if I even like it. Hahahahaha.

Maybe not the wisest choice, but I've really heard nothing but great things about it. I thought about trying to figure out what I should buy right away, but I know that I will end up getting all the expansions anyway.

It might seem a bit reckless but some games, they just feel "right", you know?

I had the same thing with quarriors. It was around 40 or 50 bucks and my mind said "I should just leave it for now and go look up some reviews first" but my heart said "no. it's ok, this is good. Buy it now." And I did and it's a great game.
