Question about Missiles

By Veruca, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm writing down all the weapons, armor and gear in seperate tables, so my players can browse them more easily instead of having to flip through several books. I'm having a bit of a problem trying to figure out the Missile Tube and the Missiles.

The CRB states that the Missile Tube does 20 damage. According to the text, the Missile Tubes are usually loaded with Proton Warheads.

Now I found this quote by HappyDaze:

Sam finally sent me an answer to this one:

"It costs 500 credits to purchase a clip of six missiles for the tube."

So this means that a single Proton Warhead would do 20 damage and cost about 85 credits (rounded up).

Looking at the missiles in DC, it says that you can use them as ammo for the Missile Tube, replacing the Tube's damage and qualities with that of the missile.

A Frag Missile costs 75 credits and does 12 damage, a Concussion one costs 200 credits and does 14 damage. Now comparing that with the Proton Warhead, which does 20 damage for about 85 credits... something doesn't seem to add up. To me, it seems like the standard Proton Missiles do tons of damage for a very low price. Am I missing something here?

I would just slap a price you think appropriate on them and not pay much credence to ammo costs. Guided munitions in reality are extremely expensive, so you can scale a price befitting the amounts of cash you typically provide your players and be fine imo.

Special features and rarity aside, id also guess the proton warheads are restricted, so getting them for 85 credits is pretty much impossible.

Hmm, good point. Maybe [R] 200 seems like a good figure then? I just don't understand why they would price them at a cost of 500 for 6.

Because they're game designers, not weapon engineers for Lockheed....

Because, well, reasons. Better doesn't have to be more expensive. Lots of things can "balance" different items. Price doesn't have to scale with damage or other features.

Same thing happens even in our world. I've seen various guns where the basic stats (barrel length, magazine capacity, caliber, etc...) all match, yet the guns vary in price by a huge percent.

Having worked with Lockheed weapons engineers this is extra funny to me as they don't know the price of missiles either (and yes, I totally did actually ask them about the price of missiles so I'm actually LOLing here).

That doesn't surpise me at all as the engineers aren't aware of the day-to-day prices of the various components, let alone the cost of R&D, the estimates of units sales, etc... The more units a company expects to sell, the less they can sell them for as those fixed costs (R&D, production setup, etc...) gets spread across more units, lowering the cost to the company to make each one.

I would say yes it is 500. that is the price governments pay for them. trying to buy the ones that fell off a truck....on the black market...from Vizhago. Well that is gonna cost more. Because black market restricted items.

You folks know about the FFG Star Wars index thread at http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/108152-a-ffg-star-wars-index/ right?

That lists every single piece of equipment, gear, weapons, armor, vehicles, and everything else we can think of. If we are missing anything, please let us know.

Oh, wow.... it has exactly everything I've written down in my excel file.
