My latest commission has been interesting to say the least. I've gotten the chance to paint a Sith Infiltrator, designed by our very own Melminiatures. Job's a good one on the design Mel, a shame that the underside wasn't quite as good looking as the top. However a certain amount of roughness is apparently something you almost have to expect from the current 3D printing technology. Enjoy!

3D printing tech is not quite there yet but it is close, so close. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it works better with bigger models/scales, where the need for extremely small details are not quite as important.

Don't! You'll only regret it in the morning. Also, the commissioner would probably be a bit sad if you did.

As for the colours, this model has only been painted with 5 colours, 1 wash and of course a primer. The grey is primarily a mix of VMC German Grey and VGC Cold Grey, with VGC Stonewall Grey and VGC Dead White used for highlights. I must admit that the photos above doesn't give quite the right impression. For some reason the ship appears slightly yellow/golden, something that I can only attribute to the lights or some setting that I have inadvertently used.

The image definitely seems to have a yellow/brown cast to it, which can be edited in any number of programs. Auto white balance is usually close, but not quite right.

Anyway the paintjob looks great. Was this ultra frosted, with a bit of sanding/filing or has Shapeways upped their game a bit?

Since I posted this I've learnt that the problem seems to be the top light source, the light is too yellow/varm. Gotta get me some better light equipment.

Anyway, the model is indeed ultra frosted, though it had some parts, especially on the underside, that were quite rough. However, I didn't really see this until after I had put some paint on the model. A white, translucent plastic do not produce very good shadows, making any uneven areas hard to spot. To counter the roughness, I painted a thick, undiluted matte varnish on the trouble areas to fill and make them smoother. If I could reach, I also gently sanded down those areas.
