There and the WWE as well. Dave Bautista did one hell of a job playing Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Le'ts just avoid Katanas.

Can you just delete this post before someone sees and thinks lightsaber katanas are brilliant? i'll do the same

It's a little late for that. The original lightsabers and the fighting style that used them in the OT were based on the Japanese Katana. Lucas took inspiration for Star Wars from Kurosawa films like The Seven Samurai.

I take it you never saw the Darksaber from The Clone Wars?? You know, the flat lightsaber??

*cough* *prequels suck* *cough*

You know there are some really great illustrations out there, like this one...

I'm pretty sure that's baseball.

I agree, nine inning nap. I even went to the stadium to watch and nearly fell asleep... at the dang stadium!

I thought that was cricket

I dont mind a crossguard on a lightsabre. i do however mind an energy crossguard. there are metals that can deflect a sabre blow well enough for the purpose.

almost all real swords have a hanguard of some kind. And I think the idea of a massless infinately sharp and indestructible sword has it's merits. since all the weight is in your hand, it should be much faster than even a rapier of fencing foil.

A properly designed handguard makes more sense than not having one at all. It is all too easy to slide a blade down an opposing one into the wrist without something to interrupt. This is why just about all real world swords had a hand guard of some kind.

honestly, while I think Darth maul's weapon was very cool, i think it would be far more dangerous to the weilder than the light claymore would. I think iF the lightsaber had intersecting short beams of light. (hold for 1970's ANSI graphics)

THIS DESIGN WOULD make more sense and have the added benefit of trapping the enemy weapon. Maybe you put 2 smaller emitters opposite eachother and offset on either side of the hilt scissor like. they do not intersect the main blade but pass very close to it in opposite sides, going opposite angles. for added protection, you could back that up with a disc-like metal handguard to prevent your hand from contact with any of the three beams.

It never made sense from a combat perspective that they didnt have handguards, though it certainly made them sleeker, and cooler.

I've practiced different types of fencing for over 28 years. When I saw the lightsaber guard I stopped watching and became rather sad.

Ok, so that did not work ay all. Just imagine something like an open pare of scizzors or the open end of the letter Y pointing foward. they made swords like this but I am not the most internet savvy about postins pics to this forum. anyway, nevermind.

but a fencing foil does have a handguard

Most swords have a guard of some type but not all. The guard especially quillions are a weapon in there own right (think punching someone in the face with one of those pointy things). But I wouldn't get close that thing. You could take your hand off, stick yourself in the chest or any other various nasty things. Also most swords with a cross guard are sometimes held in kind of a pistol grip where your pointer finger goes over the top of the guard and rests wedged between guard and blade. Pretty sure you couldn't pull that off with this monstrosity.

Good grief. Really?

Nunchaku are a totally impractical weapon that can easily cause more damage to the user than the opponent. Guess what, Bruce Lee was still a badass who could do ridiculously impressive things with them. Why? Because he knew what he was doing.

I think it's fair to say that if a Sith wants crossguards on his/her lightsaber, the Sith knows what he/she's doing. A personalised weapon can often give the user an advantage when they're experienced in it's use.

End of the day: the Rule of Cool trumps realism in the Star Wars universe. Always has, always will.

In reality it's about as dumb as you can get. On the other hand you are right Gecko. I'm still a hater but this is fantasy and I will work to get over it :)

You misspelled "Basketball". Twice. ;)

Well I haven't seen anything to convince me that this will be better than the prequals.

However I haven't seen anything that show me it will be worse.

It didn't take much.

Why is the lightsaber getting all the hate? I agree it looks totally stupid, but...

That soccerball droid deserves at least as much rage. I hate that stupid thing...

It's more of a threat to the owner than to the enemy, we've had decades of lightsaber development through the EU books and games and no one ever came up with a stupid idea like this.

The hilt has never been used for blocking like a traditional sword, if your letting the enemies blade make contact there you've lost the weapon, your hand and probably your life.

the FOOTBALL droid is silly aswell but then droid design has never been about practicality, gonk droids are awesome but hardly a super practical design with those stubby legs and no way to get up if it falls.

Aaah....Gonk droids, yees....

I like the claymore style sword. I would most certainly kill myself with those crossguards, but I'm certain the film baddie will be able to handle it just fine, and, thus, preserve my suspension of disbelief. In fact, once he's used it once or twice I'm sure noone will remember to think "hey, that's HUGELY impractical....".

What if he slices himself up with it his first fight? Id think that would do more to suspend disbelief

Fair point. Based on this first peek I don't think we're in for a comedy, though.

Well, each new lightsaber-y villain in Star Wars has had his own special lightsaber/ fighting style: Maul had his staff, Dooku fenced, Grevious did spinny things, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if this villain has a more vicious, primitive, straightforward approach to his lightsaber style. In fact, I could totally see whoever the lightsaber hero is coming at him spinning and being all lightsaber duel-y and for him to just strike the lightsaber so hard he dislogdes it from his hand.

Well I haven't seen anything to convince me that this will be better than the prequals.

True, but I don't think you can beat the OT.
