From a previous sneak peek by JJ Abrams the Snub fighter was a Z-95

The ones on in the teaser were X-wings, but without the Astromech slot. In the original X-wing The astromech right behind the cockpit and you can often see the droid on the other side the back window of the canopy in the Original movies.

The X-wing pilot is Oscar Isaac and the writing we see is in upside down Aurebesh and translates to "Pull to inflate"

And no one said that was a Z95 back in the summer when that was shown. They said it was an XWing.

The x-wing design is more reminiscent of McQuarrie's original art work for them.

So how many people are following the theory that John Boyega's character is Zare Leonis? I think it works for me.

I think what JJ is referring to is he isn't going to step in like a Tim Burton and put some weird spin and personal goofy interpretation of what he thinks Star Wars should be up on the screen. He intends to deliver what Star Wars is. That doesn't mean hyper technical gibberish and nomenclature fluff, it just means it will be what it is.

I think story speculation is fine so long as people bear in mind Disney made the whole EU/Legends decision, so we will probably see some recycled names of places and people, but I wouldn't hold my breath for background details.

In regards to having to be the every'person' movie, that's what Star Wars was from go. If it sticks to its roots it will naturally draw everyone in. Star Wars invented the summer blockbuster, and that didn't happen because the theatres were being filled by just techie genre nerds. The movie was in some theatres over a year, a pretty clear indication of broad appeal imo. It was a pop scifi serial, it was a western, it was a samurai flick, it was space nazis, it was all over the place. The prequels veered off into a self absorbed technicality fest coupled with some atrocious performances. The basic storyline itself was fine, not surprising though, and the execution was crap.

JJ can put a movie together and get actors to act, so that's covered. They brought in Kasdan on the story/script, the guy who was in on Empire and Raiders, the two best of the Lucasfilm efforts ever imo, so I am confident in the story. The clip clearly shows the effects will be a fun ride. It's going to be great I'm sure, the question is will it capture that spark that's just magic and you can't put your thumb on. We shall see in a year.....

One thing I love about Star Wars is that has tens of millions of fans how all feel like they are one of the few.

...because there's so many different things to love about it.

Yeah a big part of what I disliked about the later seasons of The Clone Wars was that I felt like the episodes meant to appeal to me, and those fans like me dwindled away after season two.. While they had some great arcs and stories my fondest memories of the OT are The Battle of Yavin and the space portions of the Battle of Endor and once season three started the ship to ship combat focused plots all but vanished. There haven't been many in Rebels but there were couple of decent space battles so far which gives me more hope for later.

I thought the idea of the Clones serving the Republic was a surprise but yeah the basic storyline was much, much better than the execution.

I liked JJ's Trek, so I am looking forward to his Star Wars. I don't have intimate knowledge of every scrap of the EU so changes to that won't bother me.

I thought his first Trek was ok but not great and his second was a disaster of epic proportions myself. I definitely think he will do better in Star Wars as long as he suppresses the urge to turn every space battle into one sided massacre, kamikaze fest, boarding action or some combo of the above.

Arguably all those things fit better in Wars than in Trek. So if thats the worst JJ does I should be ok with it.

Trek 09 was fun, Into Darkness was an appalling waste of the character of Khan and a pretty poor allegory of drone warfare/extra judicial justice.

the pictures absurd, I would assume a lightsaber couldn't cut through the hilt lest they destroy themselves every time they turned on. Probably made with cortosis weave or something similar

In the combined total of six Sta Wars movies we see a total of two space battles turn in into boarding actions, the opening battles of A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith. We never, as far as I recall see ships intentionally ramming each other on screen. The closest we get to that in the movies is fighters that are hit crashing into enemy ships, and Han landing on the back of a Star Destroyer's bridge though there were a few intentional ramming attacks mentioned in the Return of the Jedi novelization.

In the two Abrams' Trek movies literally every space battle shown on screen with the exception of one training simulation turns into a boarding action, kamikaze attack, or both.

Interesting but in the EU it was literally years after Return of the Jedi before Luke started training anyone but Leia, and Luke's Jedi Order didn't have anything like the rules against attachment that the old one did so I don't see why you think he was duplicating the old order.

Doesn't mean a gun of equal caliber to that which fires it would just go through it like butter either nor that it would be an entirely worthless attachment on a light-saber as the original post I was responding to tried to claim. More often than not it would just ricochet off. Besides, even if this weren't the case, it gives another option to parry with (ie the extended sabers) if the main blade cant' be moved quickly enough. Point being it's clearly a cross guard and a cross guards function is:

I'd be willing to bet money that if he uses it to fight in the movie we'll see him use it exactly like a cross guard, not just a weird aesthetic piece.

Fair enough, I forgot about that (tried to block most of the prequels out). This aside I don't see this as being a worthless attachment, it's look screams cross guard and I can't imagine they'd have it with the character as a worthless piece of aesthetic nonsense. I'd imagine the character would have had some redundancies put in to prevent the "it'll just cut off and it's stupid" conclusion some people are coming to.

GM Chris had a great observation on last nights Order 66 podcast. He basically asked how many times you actually see lightsabers slide off of each other in the movies? The answer is never. Once they connect they seem to be locked in position and do not slide up or down on the other sabre ever.

Also, there are weapons that can block sabres that are made of metali nthe prequels and in the clone wars cartoon so no reason why such a hilt would not work.

I'm still going with the idea that the guy who made it didn't do something right and needs those side things there as vents because of an unstable crystal.

Then why not make the entire crossguard out of that metal? Would be much simpler then this half and half version.

Because it's cooler this way.

People are acting like stuff isn't done simply because it's cool or part of the plot, then later geeks (like us) justify how it actually works or how it is beneficial. Episodes 4-6 are full of such things: Plasma/laser swords that suddenly end after a few feet, docking bays that let ships in but not air out, S-foils, only needing a "rebreather" inside a vacuum filled space worm (or not wondering why), a space worm itself, you can hear explosions in space, Death Star trench run concept (3 I can think of there), you go hide from Anakin Skywalker on his home planet with some people he knew and keep the Skywalker name, Stormtrooper armor isn't effective at all, elite Stormtroopers are push overs......

Why are we surprised we might have something else to explain? If we don't have a long list of cool things that need some explain'n', then it isn't Star Wars. Abrams might actually be purposely putting in some cool stuff that isn't very logical to keep it "Star Wars". (j/k)
