Anything that's Expanded Universe will have less diehard Star Wars fans confused. I remember when the HWK-290 came out people were wondering why FFG chose this ship, since it's not from the movies, and this is the same issue: as this game expands, we're gonna see more and more Expanded Universe stuff coming in, so the ships being released will be less and less iconic/familiar than the classic X-Wings and TIEs.
Why do people think the Starviper doesn't fit in Star Wars?

For YOU maybe. Everything they've released so far is iconic and familiar to me.
I love the look, and have preordered 4. I'm all for throwing tons of different aesthetics into the game. Makes the universe feel a bit more varied.
Don't get me wrong...I love the Starviper.

I agree, Captain. I think it may have a place in Star Wars, just not as a space superiority fighter. I don't know, maybe I'd change my mind if the model had the wings "back/closed".
I still bought one. I too can quit anytime I want.
The wings open up in combat mode, but close for landing. Like an X-Wing, but-... Actually a little smarter because the guns are f*cking centralized on the Star Viper, at least.
F*ckin' X-wing. It's cool but man it is NOT intelligently designed.
In TIE Fighter it was possible to "dodge" an xwing's fire by flying in a straight line...
Well, since you asked, I don't like the look of the thing. It looks so completely different than anything else in the star wars universe That it looks like it belongs in some other sci-fi IP. Having said that, I will buy it because I must have them all.......I have no illusions about being able to quit anytime I want. This is my plastic crack habit. But I still don't like it.
Like the dial, the capability, but not the ship. Also "tentacles that flail around in space" while it is flying seem well, stupid. there have been various efforts to apply some rational thinking as to why, but it is hard to apply reason to something that is just silly in the first place.
see above for trying to apply science to star wars.

Oh no I understand that, I'm simply saying "iconicness" is in the eye of the beholder.
Aerodynamics do not apply in space, but inertia does, and that is what the figure-skating turns rely on (change in angular momentum).
Star Munchkin: "Support GM with bogus science. Go up a level".I saw some comments a while back about the 'wings' and it seems like people don't know what they do.
Let me explains:
The wings 'open' and 'close' when maneuvering, and work by significantly shifting the center of mass around.
Imagine a figure skater who is twerling around on the ice. As they pull in their leg, the suddenly pick up speed, spinning faster and faster as their leg retracts. And as they stick their leg out, they slow down. The fighter works the same way and allows for the sudden tightening of turning radius by starting out with a long bank that with shifting panels allows for fast accelerations in the middle of turns by significantly shortening the then midway through.
Figure skaters can do this because of magnites in the skates and their belts which allow the increase in speed. The magnites are powered by magic, as all magnites are.
I hope you all have found this informative.
You are talking about a spacecraft with an energy source enabling at least interplanetary travel. Shift of weight is negligible and in space aerodynamics are immaterial. By the way, in the atmosphere the aerodynamics of the Starviper would be fatal.
ETA: not that I'm saying that the physics are completely correct- this is Star Wars, after all- but many people seem to think that zero gravity means no inertia, but inertia applies everywhere.
EXACTLY, thank you. I should of mentioned that but it was 4 am and i was tired from a 10 hour shift at best buy. So many people skipped turkey to wait in line at the doors! ![]()

I didn't try to apply science, I just told you what the fins did. There is no real science to inertia, its a thing thats here to stay, get over it. (or ignore it like the b-wing
)

try not to think about it from a practical stand-point, but rather thematic
The Star-Viper is the iconic ship of a faction removed from the OT Rebels and Empire. It's supposed to evoke a sinister and alien feeling to encapsulate a sinister and unfamiliar organization.
Imo, thematically, the Star-Viper's design and name combined for a pretty solid package, imo. In terms of realism...well, you don't try to wed the two unless you can get a scientist and a creative designer in the same room with a decent wage and bottle of alcohol.
Edited by ficklegreendiceI've seen people say they hate the ship because it looks like it doesn't belong in the Star Wars universe; it is un-Star-Warsy, or looks like it's from an anime. I don't get these arguments. True, it looks a bit different, but that's not a bad thing.
To me, Star Wars doesn't have one definite 'style', at least not when it comes to the look of the ships. Each faction has their own look, but then Scum is meant to be a collection of individuals from all sorts of different backgrounds and races. Just look at the sheer diversity in styles that exists on our own planet. Now multiply that exponentially for a galaxy teeming with sentient life. I think just about every concievable ship shape will be represented somewhere.
So, yeah. I think the Starviper looks completely at home in a universe with as much diversity as the Star Wars one, especially considering that it was custom made.
In a universe with near-infinite cultures it seems like a silly complaint.
Exactly, in the SW universe there are so-many different species with different ship design principles and artistic ideas. It seriously is inevitable you'll see something in SW that resembles Colonial Marines, or Halo Spartans, so on and so forth.
