Why do some people think it is unstar warsy? Because different people have different opinions on what is star warsy and what isn't. That's all it is, not right or wrong, just different opinions.
I think it's a terrible design from the perspective of what would probably be combat effective.
But then again, that seems to be a running theme with star wars ships, so it fits in perfectly.
They're very combat effective going by their design
The thing is we must remember Rule of Cool trumps the Laws of Physics in the Star Wars world
Star vipers had the potential to be excellent... Except they have a huuuuge front profile. It'd be impossible to miss them from the front or back!
So yes, they're probably the best fighters in SW because they look awesome.
I think it's mainly because it's so deep in the EU, and most casual fans are unfamiliar with it. I'll admit, I've never read anything about Xizor or many of these crime syndicates, but I at least understand that it is still SW. The only complaint I have about these new ships is how much they thin my wallet
Shadows of the Empire isn't deep, it's just old. It was a full on multimedia project like TFU was.
In a universe with near-infinite cultures it seems like a silly complaint.

I played the heck out of Shadows of the Empire on my N64 but I never really much noticed the Star Viper besides blowing them to tiny pieces. Some friends of mine, who never experienced any part of Shadows of the Empire, like to call the ship 'the dainty butterfly'. To them the ship isn't very Star Wars-y, and aesthetically I can somewhat agree with them. The design of most ships from the original trilogy is fairly mismatched, and industrial, with few sleek curves and aerodynamic shapes. The Star Viper doesn't follow this design philosphy and that's what sets it apart and therefore many people don't think it 'belongs' in Star Wars. At least that's my theory.

I believe the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels says that the ship has thrusters at each wing tip so that gives the thing some very crazy maneuverability options with a skilled pilot (maybe why it has Boost, BR and the S-Loop)
I kinda wish instead of a Single blister it came in a "Aces" set with 2 models, 1 in the "Attack" Position and 1 in the "Cruise" formation, but I know it probably wouldn't happen because X-wings and B-wings don't have "Cruise" variants
I think it's fine and fits in Star Wars. I just hope that the final model's wings don't look like they've been colored in with a sharpie.
I look at it... I throw up in my mouth a little... yeah, that's my problem with it. It does not look like a combat fighter in any way. It looks like a private yacht or cruiser, but c'mon, anybody gets on that thing's six with that surface area to hit, it's dust.
I liked Xizor, I liked Shadows of the Empire. I hate that stupid butterfly looking trashcan. No sir, I don't like it. Not one bit.
My hatred may be irrational, but I assure you it is still very real.
Edited by EastCoastClearly any ship that's a prettier princess than the Y-wing needs to have its negative couplings polarised, armour removed for maintenance, proton torpedo tubes scrubbed, turret ring oiled....
I don't know where I was going with this
oh right
y'all just jealous your shipfu's ain't pretty, maybe you should take better care of 'em
LOL, I find it hilarious your all debating weather a fictional ship belongs in a fictional universe, to me the ship looks fine, different but I like things that are different

Clearly. You wrote LOL right in your message.
"Star Warsy" is hardly a thing. There are literally flying saucers in this universe.
I agree, Captain. I think it may have a place in Star Wars, just not as a space superiority fighter. I don't know, maybe I'd change my mind if the model had the wings "back/closed".
I still bought one. I too can quit anytime I want. ![]()

It's not the Star Viper itself that annoys me as much as Xizor does. But, I know he and it are part of many people's Star Wars, so it's alright. Just give me my Star Wars, when it's my turn.

The wings open up in combat mode, but close for landing. Like an X-Wing, but-... Actually a little smarter because the guns are f*cking centralized on the Star Viper, at least.
F*ckin' X-wing. It's cool but man it is NOT intelligently designed.
On intial view I didn't really like it aesthetically (I never saw it prior to the game model), but it's grown on me a bit. Still not as sexy as an interceptor, but it's cool in a funky kind of way. Regardless I'll buy at least two of them, because it'll be fun in the game and that's mostly what I care about. I like Star Wars (obviously) but I play this game mostly because it's an awesome game, not because it's Star Wars.
I get why people don't like the aesthetics of it, but really, if you don't like it don't use it. Does it really ruin your game if you occasionally play against a ship which you don't think is pretty? I think the HWK looks pretty crap but it doesn't upset me (hell,
I still own one).
I saw some comments a while back about the 'wings' and it seems like people don't know what they do.
Let me explains:
The wings 'open' and 'close' when maneuvering, and work by significantly shifting the center of mass around.
Imagine a figure skater who is twerling around on the ice. As they pull in their leg, the suddenly pick up speed, spinning faster and faster as their leg retracts. And as they stick their leg out, they slow down. The fighter works the same way and allows for the sudden tightening of turning radius by starting out with a long bank that with shifting panels allows for fast accelerations in the middle of turns by significantly shortening the then midway through.
Figure skaters can do this because of magnites in the skates and their belts which allow the increase in speed. The magnites are powered by magic, as all magnites are.
I hope you all have found this informative.

Star Munchkin: "Support GM with bogus science. Go up a level".
You are talking about a spacecraft with an energy source enabling at least interplanetary travel. Shift of weight is negligible and in space aerodynamics are immaterial. By the way, in the atmosphere the aerodynamics of the Starviper would be fatal.

Once I get to lvl 10 I win!
Tell that to the designers in the 90's.
Rapidly changing the center of mass would enable radical maneuvers unlike anything we have flying in space today. Most of our space ships and satalights arent even armed with blasters!
The star viper has panels that allow the shifting of mass and gives us the new k-turn. The aggressor has 2 booms on the side that can also shift the center of mass, and we have the new k-turn as well.
Coincidence? Or aliens? Let us consult the history channel for answers.

While I wholeheartedly agree with you...real life science really doesn't matter in star wars...we have invincible awesome glory hogging space space wizards and ships that somehow manage to make sound in space...take the bwings "unique" gyrostabilization system...in real Astro science Dadonna would be an idiot...
OP I believe many of us detractors made our opinions of this stupid looking ship quite clear...I know I pointed out what fits a star wars ship to me...this doesn't fit my mold but I certainly don't speak for everyone...I certainly won't hold it against anyone who fields one or buys one...hell, the completionist in me demands I get one, even if it never sees the table...I don't see why a new thread was necessary...
Oh wait yes I do...you may now all get back to your starviper circlejerk...
So your saying that its aliens?

ETA: not that I'm saying that the physics are completely correct- this is Star Wars, after all- but many people seem to think that zero gravity means no inertia, but inertia applies everywhere.
Edited by Two_HandsI don't like the look of the Starviper. As I like the look of Phantom and Defender, I forgive them more easily that they are not OT. But the Starviper has interesting stats and an interesting dial - I think it will work for this game.
I love the look of the StarViper, but I love the look of all the ships we have in the game, and most of the SW ships I the can think of. (non-pt that is, I only like the V-wing and maybe the vultures and tri-fighters)
