Why do people think the Starviper doesn't fit in Star Wars?

By Omnitron310, in X-Wing

I've seen people say they hate the ship because it looks like it doesn't belong in the Star Wars universe; it is un-Star-Warsy, or looks like it's from an anime. I don't get these arguments. True, it looks a bit different, but that's not a bad thing.

To me, Star Wars doesn't have one definite 'style', at least not when it comes to the look of the ships. Each faction has their own look, but then Scum is meant to be a collection of individuals from all sorts of different backgrounds and races. Just look at the sheer diversity in styles that exists on our own planet. Now multiply that exponentially for a galaxy teeming with sentient life. I think just about every concievable ship shape will be represented somewhere.

So, yeah. I think the Starviper looks completely at home in a universe with as much diversity as the Star Wars one, especially considering that it was custom made.

In a universe with near-infinite cultures it seems like a silly complaint.

Central 'ball style' hull with control surfaces extending outwards...

...nope, doesnt sound like Star Wars to me.

It has the word "Star" in its name

seems to check out

Zaan must've been particularly inspired by something that day ;)

It is to give some kind of legitimacy to their complains which in reality are just about aesthethics, and would be labelled as subjective.

Did Tyber Zaan design the Star Viper, I always thought that Xizor was the mastermind...

I might be mixing up one with the other, I blame Empire At War (corruption) for being my first introduction to the ship :P (sadly, no buzzdroids present in this game :()

Disclaimer: I have no objectivity as I love the look of this ship, the idea of this ship in gameplay terms (basically a TIE Interceptor that I can fly alongside Y-Wings with ICTs!) and the cards that come with this ship (Autoth- oh, as if I even need to say it).

I think it looks perfectly Star Wars, and I say that as someone with quite a strong feeling for what Star Warsy is (see my posts regarding all the unofficial play mats that have un-Star Warsy depictions of space). As has been said, it's not ship design that's Star Warsy (do TIE Fighters, A-Wings and Firesprays have anything at all in common, aesthetically?), it's the atmosphere. That is, vibrant, uniform (not universally, but in a given area: planets are all desert, or all jungle, or all city; areas are all dirty or all shiney), with sharp edges.

Hey I know how you feel, the first time I was introduced to it was Shadows of the Empire on the N64 back in 96, but I could be completely wrong who came up with it. I wouldn't be surprised if some wikia says something else.

I may not have a problem with the look of the ship but I do have to agree that is looks like japanese anime to me for sure.

I can't quite explane it but it does look out of place to me as well.

but at the same time I like the look of the ship so I guess I don't fit either side huh?

They are just salty that the price stole their waifus

While the "wings?" of the Starviper are as ridiculously unfunctional as the solar panels on the Tie Fighters, they don't have the same visual appeal.

yeah i think its ugly but that's no cause for it to be un star- warsey.... Also think the Falcon looks goofy with its asymmetrical cockpit..But it has grown on me....

The 'wings' supposedly move as the vehicle flies, giving it an almost living appearance. I suspect that it this would be a distraction tactic and the wings are mostly superficial - you hit a wing and do some structural damage to the struts, but the vehicle is unhindered.

I actually like the ship because the wings are supposed to fold/unfold as above. It is ugly, but in a good way. Unlike the eww-wing, which is just fugly :P

People said the same about the TIE phantom and TIE defender. People'll get used to it.

I think it's mainly because it's so deep in the EU, and most casual fans are unfamiliar with it. I'll admit, I've never read anything about Xizor or many of these crime syndicates, but I at least understand that it is still SW. The only complaint I have about these new ships is how much they thin my wallet

It depends if you bought into the EU or not really. Since I did I am all for Starvipers and Sycks, and am waiting for Assault gunboats, R-41s, T-wings, Skipray Blastboats and all the rest.

I'm not huge into the EU and only saw the fighter in Empire At War, which isn't an amazing introduction to the ship. While it preforms well, the fighters are pretty stiffly animated in order to accommodate the large numbers that will appear on screen so the Starviper always looked incredibly silly bobbing and weaving through space with those wings extended.

As a model, though, the design is imo very unique and the name gives it a nicely intimidating persona

No big deal. But it does scream B5, not Star Wars.

it's like a beautiful butterfly.

or a kite that got loose.

They do not think it fits because they were too young to read Shadows of the Empire. ^__^

It is one of the ships I have hungered for most. VERY Star Wars.

Digging every Star Wars niche game back in the day, I absolutely love the Starviper, Outrider, Phantom, Moldy Crow, etc.

Wave 5 and 6 actually re-spiked my interest in Shadows of the Empire, which I never actually read. I'm thinking about buying the ebook, and listening to it on my Android with TTS, since the audiobook version is abridged.

To hell with what's "canon". Much of this old stuff feels so much more Star Wars'y, than most of the official stuff I've seen in the recent years. And that's the feel I fell in love with in the first place.

It's all canon unless overrode by something that is moar canon!

I think it's a terrible design from the perspective of what would probably be combat effective.

But then again, that seems to be a running theme with star wars ships, so it fits in perfectly.

They're very combat effective going by their design

The thing is we must remember Rule of Cool trumps the Laws of Physics in the Star Wars world ^_^
