Problems understanding

By chicklewis, in CoC Rules Discussion

I'm having problems with the "Unorthodox Tactics" card, which probably means I'm not understanding something. It says:

-- Neutral --
Unorthodox Tactics
--------------------
Type: Conspiracy (1 copy)
Cost: 0
Struggles: TCAI
Game Text: Resolve the skill comparison at this conspiracy before any of its struggles occur. If you win this conspiracy before any struggles occur, you may choose which of its struggles resolve.

Does this mean if I already have four sucesses on the story, and if I win the preliminary skill comparison, and therefore win the story with five successes, that the story resolution is NOT stopped as usual by the win, but that it continues for as many of the regular struggles as I choose??

Seems awfully corner-case and unlikely to take place. Difficult to imagine anyone including this card in a deck. What am I missing, please?

Or is the text perhaps intended to say "If you win the skill comparison before any struggles occur - - - " instead of "If you win this conspiracy before any struggles occur - - - " ?

Seems much more useful that way, and I would definitely play it in a skill-based deck.

Opinions please ?

I'm going to go with if you have 4 success and the skill gives you the fifth then you win it. It says you choose which icon struggles will be played out if you win the skill struggle. Therefore, you choose zero other struggles to take place.

That's how I read it, but I'm certainly not the expert in these parts.

I agree with you guys. Of course it is possible that you want some of the struggles to resolve anyway - you could have some benefit. I don't think you automatically skip all 4 struggles, you look at the situation.

So i see it meaning if you had 4 success tokens and you win skill (calculated before icons in this case), you win the story and can skip struggles if you want.

Hard to believe they printed a card which is so completely lame.

If you win the card before the struggles you ALREADY get to skip ALL the struggles. I'm positing another witless typo on this card as published. Playtesters? Donald ??

Maybe you want to resolve some of the struggles, for the effect, or to trigger card effects?

I am pretty sure that your right here. But Imay not agree with the "lame-ness" of this effect. (I am just jumping back into the game though so bare with me).

Lets say your playing with a high skill/combat board against a high terror board..... your pretty much in a position to ride with the last counter. I guess it seems like lots of overkill for the last counter but may be worth it for a third story....... Not sure though.. I may be in far left field.

Also, resolving Skill first means you have a good chance at winning this one, since you are likely the first player to run it. Even if your character would die horribly during resolution, you'll have a good shot at that final token...

Good point... the icon struggle part might be moot - if you can just go to skill and win the story that can be an advantage against an aggressive opponent.
