Exponent of the Rear Admiral

By macar, in X-Wing

So having play tested the Rear Admiral quite a bit with this setup

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Expose (4)
Moff Jerjerrod (2)
Intelligence Agent (1)
Weapons Engineer (3)
Experimental Interface (3)

It has worked quite well against a variety of opponents. The 4-5 dice with better luke on your initial roll has devastated anything trying to get within range 1-2.

The current build is to use a loaded up whisper as well. Two ships firing at 9-8 and dealing 8-10 potential damage between the two. However after the playtesting I did find that even with the crits RAC puts out there seems to be just a slight lack of firepower by a fraction and it comes mostly at the range 2-3 ranges.

I will be swapping RAC to look like this

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Expose (4)
Moff Jerjerrod (2)
Darth Vader (3)
Weapons Engineer (3)
Experimental Interface (3)
Swapping Vader for the Intel Agent creates a devastating wake of destruction for our new found Hero of the Empire.
It is a lot of points vested (61 in total, almost 66% of your squad points)
Now I think this will fill the niche of Cannon that the Rear Admiral at his point cost sorely needs. Against a high agi swarm it is crucial to kill a ship a turn. By the looks of it you can now one shot anything that has 7 HP (or more if you pull direct hits).
This build puts the most powerful cannon in the hands of Imperial Players.

Trying to see where the seventh point of damage is coming from for the one shot.

Base 3

Expose 1

Range 1

Vader 1

What am I missing?

Nice idea. I agree that the build without Vader was lacking some consistent damage output, making games harder for the Phantom support than they should. Next time I'll throw Vader into the mix!

And Weapon's Engineer...interesting...I seem to recall you DO like that card :P Makes sense to me!

Instead of Vader what about Rebel Captive or Mara Jade? Something that makes use of the Admiral being a big fat target and also potentially being surrounded by bad guys.

I didn't get it at first, but Weapon's Engineer gives the possibility of a turn where you can just take Expose as an action, since you already have a TL on a second ship, leaving you stress free. Also, sometimes it IS still nice to take Focus, even with that ability. It blows when you roll 4 focus or something like that.

So I gave the Darth Vader, Rear Admiral build a real try, with Whisper support, and it was pretty great. It DID give the Admiral that bit of damage that he was missing. A 1-2 punch combo from Whisper and RA get a Vader crit passed shields on a B Wing pretty consistently, sometimes even finishing it off. Nice idea Mr. Macar!
