changing the way you fly

By eibon, in X-Wing

so im very much a firespray pilot, go straight at them break thru and keep shooting, now I've ben wanting to use soontir and whisper for ages but im a bit rubbish at the whole precision flying, do u guys have any tips on learning precise flying techniques?

cheers

This thread should have been titled: changing the way I fly.

Just practice. Put asteroids all over the table, try and fly from one end to the other without hitting them

use open space and practice formations. learn to do stuff like three ships in line making a move of 3, 4, and 5 in turn one, with evade (in combat) or straight boost (if out of range), then hard turning 1, 2 and 3 in turn 2 and see how you end up with them all in the same spacing but at 90 degrees in half way up the board. Add a boost in the same direction and notice how you're pretty much 'behind the lines by turn 2.

Base to base is a recipe for disaster for formation flying but half a base spacing leaves you a little room to manouvre but still keeps a tight unti for 'range 1' abilities... also makes you a prime target for assault missiles. :)

a lot of it comes down to remembering that a ship base is 1 'move unit' if going straight. So if you can look at your ship, visualise your move as 'x' number of move units and add one for the ship itself you can accurately predict where you will end up with straigts and k turns.

Banks and curves obviously add more and there are videos on youtube that can show you this better than i ever will by typing.

Vassal.

Watch TONS of games. I did, have, do... My entire way of flying has changed, and for the better. I have been using Echo exclusively for the last month. Thanks to watching Vassal games and seeing Whisper flown (like 30 times a day... sigh), I have easily tripled my flying skills. Not only with Echo, but anything I choose to put an EU on (or anything with Boost). My spatial awareness is also improving. I'm lucky to Asteroid-bump at all in a game now, and one of my favoured tactics is now darting in and out of tight asteroid clusters (3-4 roids). Even with large based ships. Vassal has definitely helped me.

Cheers

just play more if you can. its the only thing that has helped me. Oh and always remember to look at your dials from the Spacecrafts point of view..lol don't know how many time I have Ziged when I wanted to Zag... Kind of scared to try ECHO..lol

yeah orientating the dial is really important. Critical even.

I also find slowing yourself down helps. Its very easy to rush through your lower PS pilots as you're itching to get that shot off with wedge or luke.

But doing this you can sometimes forget to take your action as you're 'target fixated' on getting that kller wedge shot in.
