Do we have a facility for such a thing? If not, do we want to start one?
Play by post games?
I haven't seen any within FFG's Forums, though I'm not aware of any particular reason one couldn't do one here. (perhaps in the Fiction section?) Otherwise Zetaboards provides free hosting services that are fairly easy to operate. If you do go about creating one, I'd be happy to join in as a player.
Me too!
But I don't know if these forums cut it. I'd use something else.
A lot of folks already host character sheets on Obsidian Portal so it would be pretty simple to gather the resources needed online.
Even if it isn't played on this forum you could post the game details with rules/preferences here and then private message those interested.
For example you could just make a thread saying you're wanting to GM a game centred around a Rogue Trader whose ancestor bankrupted the dynasty attempting to create a a flagship worthy of themselves so that they have a very low (or non existant profit factor) but an amazing ship. Then you specify that you're not permitting xenos PCs or the tainted origin path (or whatever).
Obsidian Portal is great. Everyone should check out my campaign in my signature and like it and feed my ego!
I do like the idea of play by post, but it gets hard because RT is such a communal game that it can be difficult if you can't get a number of people online at the same time to have things running back and forth.
There are play by post options available. RPG Crossing and Myth Weavers are two that I frequent a fair bit, and both have had Rogue Trader and other WH40k games on them, though they aren't exactly common.
Play by post doesn't require people to be online at the same time, so it's relatively convenient compared to a face to face game, but it runs slower than a real-time type game. Play by skype or roll20 would be good if you wanted real-time but online gaming..
Erathia, that wiki is great. I'm already stealing liberally from it
To echo Spatula, the value of PbP is the ability to post on one's own time, particularly valuable for those of us who are unable to dedicate an uninterrupted chunk of time for gaming. I've actually been in a couple of 40k (every type but Only War) based PbPs and they work fine, though it takes some getting used to.
I've actually found that Rogue Trader works well in PbP format because of the existence of followers/minions. Talking with and/or directing around your cadre of minions can easily fill out a post and allow you to accomplish more per posting. It also emphasizes the resources and leadership role of the Explorers that can often be forgotten at the table top due to speed-of-play. I just recommend instituting a few house rules to reduce dice usage and speed up things like combat.
Also, if someone is willing to GM, it would be interesting to have a game that's all us forum users...
Edited by QuicksilverI'm prepared to be proven wrong about my points regarding a play by post, but have no idea how to GM it. I will happily play a Seneschal constantly whining about how events aren't matching up with what he's read in books.
I have a few character concepts I'd like to try out as well. Given it is possible that people might never meet in person on a Rogue Trader's ship and always interact through viewscreens, proxies or minions Play by Post could work.
That to me is one of the appeals of play by post games, because it allows for players to go off on missions and, provided they're honest, not let the other players know whether or not things are going well.
The only play by post game I've ever done has been one for Paranoia, and that was just fantastic since no one trusted anyone else.

I've done Play by Post on another forum where I was playing a secret character. I was working with the rest of the group and attempting to be as helpful as possible but no-one knew I existed and when their ship started doing things on it's own (even extremely helpful things) everyone was suspiscious and started pulling things apart trying to figure out what happened.
I remained a secret character for several months in real time (it was a huge struggle not to post in the OOC section) but the reveal was pretty amazing. One of the other players was really impressed and enjoyed the fact that it was something you just can't do well in face to face roleplay.
That said it was hard on the GM because I had to post what I was doing and then the GM had to post it as though these things were just happening.
Edited by WeedyGrotI would be very excited to play in a play-by-post game. We could even use this very thread. Would anyone want to GM?
Anyone?
I have been currently running one Rogue Trader Campaign through PbP - in French- for three years, and yes, it is a good way, though you need to get quite a large crew of players and be sure they keep a good rythm : if for instance the RT player leaves, it can bring all things to a halt.
I would not mind participating in a PbP in English, already done so. If no one volonteers , I can take the GM role, though I would not mind being a player for once.
As a player, I'm the one with the cunning plans. I can be a Seneschal, or a Rogue trader, though a sociable Navigator can be up my alley.
As a GM, I'm on the crazy side of Rogue trader, as my contributions to "You know you are playing to Rogue trader when" thread can testify. And you would have to get used to my broken English
That would be great if you could GM, but it also sounds like you could use a break. Would anyone else be willing to GM?
On a side note, if we were to play I would probably be most enthused to play as a Rogue Trader or an Explorator.
I also thought your English was pretty solid.
I'm in, but running several campaigns IRL has burned me out on GMing. I guess we should advertise for GMs in the classified ads or something
So, how many we are ? who amongst us can volonteer to GM ? and more importantly, what can of campaign we would like to play ? What sort of dynasty and flaghsip we'd like to get at the beginning ?
So far you're the only one who has shown any interest at all in GMing and I generally hold the opinion that the GM sets the stage for the type of story they want to tell and then the players fit in with that.
I'd love to play but I don't think I can commit to GMing.
I'm glad to play whatever to fit in which ever campaign (Probably Cult Mechanicus regardless of Career.) - but similar to some others in the thread, I have to many PbPs i'm currently running to take another as GM.
I agree with Weedy that it's the GM's final call on what type/theme/style of game we go for, but I'll toss out a couple ideas i've had before if you want them.
1) A Rogue Trader Dynasty newly warranted by the influence of the Administorum to colonize a recently opened/discovered area of space (not Kronus obviously). Warrant requires turning over a colony of at least X size every decade.
2) Tired of exorbitant Rogue Trader demands, a Lathe magnus has sent his own exploration vessel into the Expanse to search for lost technology, alien species and stellar phenomena.
3) (Taking a page out of the main rulebook) A group of poor Rogue Traders with space-tapped transports and frigates agree to pool their resources for one last shot to thrive in the expanse.
4) (Similar but alternate) An immensely powerful Rogue Trader dynasty has decided to add the Expanse to it's operations, sending a flotilla of lesser family members.
Or, you know, what ever, I just thought I'd toss out ideas.
Also, in my experience, one can get away with just having an OOC and an IC thread if necessary. I'd have who ever GMs drop the first post for the OOC thread though, so they can edit and store our characters/ship/etc in that post.
Edited by QuicksilverWell, I was asking, because I like when I GM to build thingsds together with my players, the better to get them involved, to fuel their interest, and also to be sure everyone have fun.
As it looks like the GM mantle is mine :
- the setting : would you rather stay in Koronus or go in an homebrew sector ? I'd like to know that quickly, as I have to choose a place, find proper pictures, do a starmap, create npcs...
- the tone : I add sometime cultural references and humor to the grimdark, through strange names gimmicky npcs and acheotech items from other settings. Not at Deffwotch level, but small notches here and there.Though, it is straightface grimdark in character.
- the starship : I'd rather you keep the same ship, thus, being in one that should grow with the PCs. Light Cruiser and up, or the larger transport. A special Universe might be funny. Though, I can undertstand you'd rather be on a nimble frigate. I'll use Mathammer fixes.
- The Warrant : I like older warrants. What I'd like to see, for once, is a Bearer Warrant, aka "the one bearing this Warrant is a Rogue Trader, the ruightfull owner of XXXXX, starship of YYY class".
But then, if you want to play upstarts with a small starship and a lot of funds, or a small flotilla of small ships with an agreement between impoverished traders, it's good as well.
Ooh, I like the idea of an Ancient Universe-Class Dynastic Flagship. Perhaps the Cousin who was Rogue Trader before < PC Rogue Trader > was slowly selling off components to feed his/her useless decadent lifestyle, thus explaining why it starts with relatively poor components?
I don't really have a strong opinion on Sector...
I'd like to be in the Koronus sector because I think the stryxis have a lot of potential.
Almost all of my concept ideas would be looking to interact with them in some way.
I'm also a big fan of getting an utterly massive flagship that we can steadily upgrade.
I'm okay with setting it wherever. My Koronus Sector ended up pretty homebrewed, as I bet everyone's does, so moving it or keeping it would be fine.
I would request we not have the warrant holder/dynastic power be a PC, but rather have some sort of Prince George type figure who has squandered his family's fortune, and we're now all going around him to try and keep our ship from being sold to the Ordo Debtor. We can still have a Rogue Trader who poses as him as a figurehead, but it'd put us all on a more even keel I imagine.
