The Hero Championship 2014

By Thanatopsis, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

AN Eowyn (superhero for questing)
AO Frodo (very good ability, low threat, good for variable decks)
AP Elrond (with Vilya, Imladris and Gandalf one of the strongest decks)

AQ Bifur (Beregond is very good sentinel, but I like dwarf decks and I must vote for Bifur :-))
AR Sam Gamgee (one of my favourite combinations is: Sam, Merry and Pippin (lore)

AS Galadriel (nice lady, very strong abilities and super attachments)
AT Glorfindel (I am sad for elimination of Mablung, but Glorfindel is very good too - for secrecy decks)
AU Aragorn (strong hero, super attachments (Wingfoot, Sword that was broken etc.) and his ability)

AN - Eowyn. Verrry tough call, but have some recent love for Eowyn with a Steed of the Mark as a top tier quester and defender in Fog on the Barrow Downs or any other quest where you defend with willpower.

AO - Frodo, the original super defender, and fits very nicely in the Hobbit theme of "try to keep threat low" while also paying threat costs to use abilities.

AP - Boromir. I don't really use either of these heroes all that often, but I'm more into tactics and get bored with Elrond+Vilya.

AQ - Beregond, opens up a path to victory for quests that hit you hard and fast...

AR - Sam. He was the upset hero in the tournament last year. Go Sam, beat that grey wizard!

AS - Haldir for a fabulous and kind of "out of sphere" ability.

AT - Celeborn, the father of a very powerful, deceptively resilient archetype.

AU - Eomer, another very tough choice, but Eomer with Firefoot is my favorite attacker in the game at the moment.

AN - Eowyn - This is really tough because they are both one trick ponies that are very good at their one trick. I think I have to give the edge to Eowyn now that Haldir has emerged as Legolas 2.0.

AO - Frodo - I voted for Elrohir every round, but he's not in the same league as Frodo.

AP - Elrond - Even though I find Vilya decks boring now, I still really like Elrond as a hero. His abilities are both really good and he's a great defender with burning brand and cloak of Lorien. I just never use Boromir and don't find it enjoyable to just have one character that does all of the blocking/attacking.

AQ - Beregond - This shouldn't be close. Beregond is an absolute beast and the best security blanket besides possibly Frodo. Bifur is nice, but I generally don't like dwarves and always choose Pippin over him.

AR - Sam - I'm still sad Pippin didn't win, but Sam is an excellent choice. He opens up many deckbuilding possibilities while Gandalf is always in "a Gandalf deck," similar to "an outlands deck" or "a Vilya deck".

AS - Galadriel - Another really tough choice that feels very similar to the Eowyn/Legolas matchup. I just think Galadriel opens up more deckbuilding opportunities while Haldir and Legolas are too similar for either of them stand out above the other.

AT - Celeborn - Another tough choice because I have used Glorfindel a lot. But, he's still overpowered while Celeborn is new and shiny and the key to a really fun deck archetype.

AU - Eomer - I probably wouldn't put either Eomer or Aragorn in my top 8. I'll give the edge to Eomer because (a) I like Rohan, (b) Firefoot on him is really cool, © I don't enjoy decks built around Aragorn's threat reset or decks built around Sword that was Broken, and (d) I expect tactics Aragorn will be by far my favorite version of Aragorn.

AN - Legolas

AO - Frodo

AP - Boromir (T)

AQ - Beregond

AR - Sam

AS - Haldir

AT - Celeborn

AU - Eomer

More difficult choices this time around. I love both Legolas and Eowyn, and both are excellent at their respective roles. However, I feel that Legolas offers more decisions during the actual game. Likewise for Boromir in his match up with Elrond. Sam is a great hero, and I hope he beats Gandalf. Celeborn was an easy choice for opening up an entire new archetype. And finally, Eomer is just fun!

AN Legolas

AO Frodo

AP Elrond

AS - Haldir.

AT - Celeborn. Not today, Spirfindel.

As you can see, the Tactics heroes must prevail. They simply are too fantastic to lose to such ridiculous folk.

AN Legolas for sure, I've had him in one of my decks since the start and he makes tactics much more viable. I've never used Eowyn and have never really liked her character either.

AO Elrohir!! Come on buddy you can make it another round! One of my favorite heroes and happy he even made it this far, everyone seems to love Frodo though so I think this might be it for him.

AP Elrond, Boromir is a great hero but I just prefer Elrond and always use to abuse Boromir's ability too much resuting in threating out or very close matches where Boromir would do ALOT of the work. Also Elrond is just ridiculously good, the healing bonus, being able to pay for any ally and his stellar stats and great traits.

AQ Beregond, used to love and use him before I switched to the Twins. Great defender.

AR Samwise, so long as he doesn't win altogther haha Gandalf seriously cannot win this, he is TOO powerful and broken.

AS Haldir, what a horrible match up this one is though..... I have been using Haldir since he came out and he is just incredibly useful and fun to play with. Load him up with weapons and watch him go. Galadriel just the other night I put in my decks instead of Glorfindel and she is also a ton of fun to play with and very useful. Having to choose between her willpower boost from Nenya or the card draw and threat loss (unless you get unexpected courage on her) is also very interesting. Overall however I have to go with Haldir.

AT Celeborn, I don't even use him and haven't even tried but he is an amazing hero and opens up Silvan's big time. I run a mix of Noldor and Silvan and don't really need him and could never part with Elrohir anyway but hes pretty awesome. Glorfindel however just allows me to have a much lower starting threat and plop Asfaloth and LoV on him and go to work. Like many others I've grown tired of this hence the try out of Galadriel instead of him I recently had. The ONLY massive issue is the loss of Asfaloth... the higher starting threat, action advantage etc is all almost meaningless and completely offset by Galadriel's abilities but Asfaloth is just the best card ever for location control/lock. Anyway before I get further off topic as powerful and useful as Spiritfindel is Celeborn is new and shiny and opens up Silvan decks so wins this one for me.
AU Eomer, this was also a very hard one as I used to use Loragorn and depended heavily on his threat reset. It got to be a bit of a crutch however and also just completely counters certain quests so I gotta go with Eomer here who is a great attacker and really drives tactics Rohan decks. Firefoot and another attack booster turns him into a beast.

Go Elves!

Too many tight matchups. I honestly can't give great reasons for choosing any one over another most of the time except that I've played one of them more, so I'm just gonna throw the list out there:

AN Legolas
AO Frodo
AP Elrond
AQ Beregond
AR Gandalf
AS Galadriel
AT Glorfindel
AU Eomer

I'm calling that the final is going to be Legolas Vs Gandalf/Galadriel

AN Legolas
AO Frodo
AP Boromir (T)
AQ Bifur
AR Sam
AS Haldir
AT Celeborn
AU Eomer

AN - Eowyn

AO - Frodo

AP - Boromir - really tough choice, is I've recently started really liking the Elrond hero. But boromir has pulled that fat out of the fire so many times, he still edges it.

AQ - Beregond.

AR - Gandalf. I like Sam, but Gandalf is epic.

AS - Galadriel

AT - Glorfindel

AU - Aragorn - I really like Eomer, but I've yet to build a successful deck with him, whereas Aragorn has been in many successful ones.

AN Legolas - I dont know why but these days i enjoy a lot with Legolas in combat decks (and i hate play with Eowyn -always there is one playing her)
AO Frodo - I love my last spirit hobbit deck
AP Boromir - I hate Elrond Vilya fails ^^
AQ Bifur!!! For sure - Beregond is the most dead hero i have seen defending, lol.
AR Hard choise... mmmmmh uf! Gandalf. Let's go. He is new and Sam won last challenge.
AS Haldir. ^^ Simply, i like him.
AT Celeborn. Welcome the silvan decks long time whished.
AU Eomer. He is funny.

AN Legolas (This matchup was clear for me after the round 2 because both heroes are great. Hard choice here, I like them both but Legolas is my overall favourite hero so he defeats the Rohan lady.)

AO Frodo (Kind of surprised that two of the most signature leadership heroes made an exit here in round 2. For round 3 this is one of the poorest matchups for me because Neither will stand any chance in round 4. I pick Frodo over Elrohir simply because I play him more and like his ability combined with low starting thread.)

AP Boromir (Poor Thalin got defeated but there is no blame to give here. Elrond simply is a very strong hero but Boromir is my choice here simply because he is more fun to play. This one will be very close I think, interesting to see who will win this matchup. Either of these would have beaten Frodo or Elrohir easily though.)

AQ Beregond (The sneaky dwarf beats one of the most reliable defensive houses there is? Surprise for me but I can see the value of Bifur in many decks. But Beregond simply is better because he is a defensive powerhouse right from the start and allows some resources savings for tactics which is always a good thing.)

AR Gandalf (Interesting matchup here but I think Gandalf will slay the next hobbit here. Merry didn't had a chance. Sam is good though and receives some love but Gandalf is to new and to strong of a hero to be denied by him in this round.)

AS Galadriel (Another interesting matchup. Both heroes won there round 2 quite easily but this one will be close. Both heroes are very well designed but for me Galadriel is simply better.)

AT Celeborn (I hate spirit Glorfindel even more now. Poor Mablung :( , such a great hero. Hope that Celeborn whips Glorfies ass this round and gets rid of this hero.)

AU Eomer (I can't believe these many votes for Aragorn in this matchup already. I mean yes his ability is good and he has some attachment love but Eomer is soooooooo much more fun to play. There is nothing better then riding over your enemies with a pumped up Eomer on Firefoot, reading him with Rohan warhorse and then destroying another enemy!)

So for me semi final predictions here would be Celeborn vs. Galadriel in the lower bracket which would be an interesting matchup and a good call for top 4 heroes and for the upper bracket it will be Legolas vs. Elrond although Elrond is questionable. Still Legolas looks like a clear favourite for the finals again this year which he definitely deserves.

AO - Frodo
AP - Elrond
AQ - Beregond
AR - Gandalf
AS - Galadriel
AT - Celeborn
AU - Aragorn

AN- Eowyn- tough choice, both are good at what they do. But there a lot of good attackers, so point for Éowyn

AO-Elrohir- I just like to keep my threat low. Elrohir is good, but... this is still the weakest duel in top 16

AP-Boromir- I don't like when a hero has all stats good like Elrond, but you can't use them and it makes sky-high threat cost. On the other hand Boromir has no wasted stats.

AQ- Beregond- as I said before, the fact you can have 6 DEF and spear of the citadel on 1st round for free is crazy.

AR- Sam Gamgee- Gandalf is kind of broken. For example his ability+ Elrond's vilya. I prefer OHaUH Gandalf.

AS- Haldir of Lorien- before you vote for Galadriel build a two-handed deck with Haldir and give him some toys.

AT- Glorfindel- hardest decision this round. But Glorfindel is so universal and lets you make some decks that wouldn't be possible without him.

AU- Éomer- probably the best attacker in the game at the moment, with badass artwork and 10 threat? Yes please.

Seriously, before you make your votes, build a two-handed deck with Haldir and many weapons. He is crazily good and fun to play.

edited, but did not change any votes

AN Eowyn – There is always an immensely strong argument to include Eowyn on the table. Legolas has a ton of competition both as a tactics hero and as a ranged stud (Haldir is better, I'd be interested to see the voting on this matchup). I can see why Legolas is a fan favorite, but Eowyn is the superior hero.
AO Frodo – Easy choice. Elrohir has too many restrictions to be broadly useful. Frodo is a great addition in nearly any deck and also comes with lots of hobbit synergies.
AP Elrond – A very close one here, and I am totally torn. Elrond just barely gets the nod and not necessarily because of Vilya. He smooths out the balance of any deck and brings a lot of options to the table. The bonus healing is difference making particularly on the archery heavy quests. I won’t be a bit sad if Boromir wins though.
AQ Beregond – Stud especially when supported by shadow cancellation.
AR Sam – Argh! A very hard match up. Sam is one of the best “any” deck hero in the game plus he comes with synergies. I am having an absolute blast with Gandalf though even though it requires some very targeted deckbuilding. This is another that I won’t be disappointed either way.
AS Haldir – I see the value of Galadriel but I continue to maintain that she introduces a dangerous amount of fragility in the opening turns. Haldir is perhaps the most devastating hero in the game to build around (perhaps second to Boromir) with his free preemptive strike.
AT Glorfindel – Too good. I wish we had more low threat options to compete with him. Hobbits are a good start but we need more.
AU Aragorn – Send forth Strider to strike down the upstart Eomer. I prefer my stud attackers to have ranged and/or action advantage and/or be Haldir/Dunhere types. And for pure early turn power, I prefer Beorn (who has high attack AND action advantage). I could make an argument that Gimli is more than capable of delivering the same studliness as Eomer with a higher upside, versatility, and synergy. Aragorn has fallen a bit out of favor with me simply due to other awesome choices but he is still a great option particularly with wingfoot bolstering him.

Could it be possible that we have a dark horse in Eomer who makes finales against Legolas?! Just a thought....

That would be a fun match-up. I predict Legolas would win, but I am not sure how I would vote...
